This is re-issue of the previous bestseller C756081 (4011790756127). Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's 1985 production of "Pagliacci" (and "Cavalleria rusticana") was one of the French director's last assignments at the Vienna State Opera before his untimely death 1988. The sensation of that June evening in 1985 was, however, Placido Domingo's consummate performance in Leoncavallos Pagliacci. He was more than an expressive singer with an incomparable tenor voice, he was also a truly great actor able to convey the whole world of his emotions to every member of the audience. Domingo's ability to bring out utter hopelessness transformed Leoncavallo's hackneyed opera into a highly individual tragedy from whose sway no one could escape. The dramatic intensity of his performance fired the other singers, too: thanks not least to her extraordinary vocal skills, Ileana Cotrubas was able to make Nedda's easygoing attitude as credible as her genuine feeling for Silvio and her struggle to safeguard the new love that had entered into her life; Wolfgang Schone gave Silvio an unusually clear-cut character and Heinz Zednik's presence in the cast likewise gave Peppe a whole new dimension. Finally, the French baritone Matteo Manuguerra was able to display thanks to his great and powerful voice a "terrifyingly evil" Tonio. By the end of the evening the public and the critics "were genuinely gripped"

"The production at the Teatro Real in Madrid was a top-of-the- range version… Vidal is a peach of a role for Domingo: his voice easily commands its baritone range and he dominates the action, convincingly heroic in voice and figure and still able to project a greying virility in the style of Sean Connery. Nancy Herrara as Luisa and Jose Bros as Javier gave fine support." -- The Independent

"Luisa Fernanda is a fantastic addition to Opus Arte’s already very impressive catalog of classical releases. Aside from the small lighting issue, which I addressed in my technical analysis, this is just about a perfect disc. I am definitely looking forward to more Spanish music being released on Blu-ray. I hope Manuel de Falla isn’t too far behind. Very Highly Recommended." -- Dr Svet Atanasov, Blu-ray.com [April 2009]

"Luisa Fernanda deserves to be better known and appreciated. Hopefully this excellent BD performance will help foster that appreciation. Beautifully played and sung, and with a striking physical production, this is zarzuela at its finest. Highly recommended." -- Jeffrey Kauffman, DVD Talk [June 2009]

For Placido Domingo fans, THE YOUNG DOMINGO serves up more than enough satisfying fare. These two disks contain not only the entirety of three opera aria recordings made by Domingo from 1969 (the year following his triumphant debut at the Metropolitan Opera) to 1973. They also include two Ruggero Leoncavallo selections that were originally a part of Domingo's recording of 'I Pagliacci' and (most exciting) "Pourquoi me réveiller?" from Jules Massenet's 'Werther;' a recording that never made it to the original LP for reasons of space.
In the 1969 liner notes to 'Romantic Aria,' the earliest of the three recordings included on this disk, Richard Mohr wrote that Domingo, as a child, "began to dream of being a conductor, an ambition that still haunts him." In recent years, Domingo has moved in the direction of fulfilling that dream, conducting more and singing less. It seems appropriate, then, to begin looking back and taking stock of his remarkable career. While Domingo has kept much of his inimitable vocal luster over the past thirty years, the selections on this disk capture Domingo in his youthful bloom and testify to why he electrified the operatic community when he first came on the scene.
