Without any doubt Euryanthe is an absolute masterpiece, rich on unforgettable melodies and brilliantly orchestrated. While today only the overture is frequently performed, the entire production is worthy of renewal. Furthermore, it is the only opera by Weber without spoken dialogues, continuity being created by orchestral recitatives linking the “numbers“ in a very skillful way. This makes it an ideal opera for radio, as this production proves in no uncertain way. The interpretation is on a high level and we get a glimpse of the great talent of Kurt Masur, famed German conductor and “one of the last old-style maestros” at the beginning of his glorious career.

German tenor Rudolf Schock boasted a wide repertoire. He regularly recorded opera and lieder in addition to doing television, radio, and film work. He was known for his warm, flexible voice, and a "strong top voice" which suited him to heroic roles. He was known to be able to fill a recital hall full of audience members who had never before taken part in a classical programme. He continued making concert appearances and recordings well into his sixties. Unfortunately, in 1986 at the age of 71, he passed away suddenly. RELIEF publishes here the eight orchestral songs of Strauss, Schumann's Dichterliebe and two programmes of selected songs recorded in 1957.

BELLE LURETTE is Jacques Offenbach's last work. He did not get to see or hear the world premiere or that of his fantastic opera "Hoffmanns Erzählungen", which he worked on at the same time. This publication is a recording by Radio Leipzig from 1958. The tapes were only rediscovered in the archive in the summer of 2019 and are thus offered for the very first time on album. The performance features top GDR radio stars, the Grand Radio Orchestra and the Leipzig Radio Choir under the musical direction of Vienna conductor Gottfried Kassowitz, who makes the score sparkle with precision and transparency, yet with great temperament. The arrangement by Walter Zimmer is characterized by subtle interventions and allows all music numbers to be played, with three exceptions. The encore section has been extended to include 10 music numbers from the French O.R.T.F. production of 1965, making it possible to make meaningful comparisons between the original version and the German version. The accompanying text is by Matthias Käther, well-known and popular, among other things, for his music broadcasts on Radio rbb Kultur ("Opernführer" and others).
