In this curated selection of music from the Indian subcontinent, you will find a vibrant expression of what might be called the living Indian Choral tradition. As plural and changing as light within a prism, the album moves from the fluid harmonies of a Konkani wedding song to deep somatic meditations inspired by the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore, from Hindi secular poetry associated with the changing seasons to a whole-choir explosion of joyful rhythmic syllables in Reena Esmail's virtuosic raga exposition. In this humble tribute to the monumental tapestry of Indian classical music, the Somerville College Choir gives the oldest expression yet of it's aspiration to embrace musical styles far beyond the liturgical canon.

At the heart of this album from the Gould Piano Trio is Schubert's Piano Trio in E-flat major, D. 929, a late masterpiece of emotional depth and formal ingenuity. Heard here in it's complete version, the finale restores the haunting B minor passage, it's circling piano figures echoing Der Leiermann, while the Andante's cello theme weaves through the work like a recurring memory. Alongside it is the youthful Piano Trio in B-flat major, D. 28 - fresh, lyrical, and full of promise, whilst Schubert Dances - a charming new suite of waltzes, Landler and Deutscher arranged for piano trio by Brian Newbould, completes the programme and showcases Schubert's lighter side. Few contemporary composers have enriched the choral repertoire quite like Gabriel Jackson, and this recording from The Choir of Canterbury Cathedral is a luminous testament to his singular voice. The foremost of which is Brahms's third Piano quartet Op. 60 - the Werther quartet; it's music unquestionably reflecting the profound emotions of love, despair and overwhelming sorrow which lead to the ultimate demise of the protagonist in Goethe's famed novel. In this unique and fresh, but highly considered interpretation, a new light is shone on one of Brahms's greatest works. Hindemith's moving Viola Sonata Op. 11 No. 4 blends Germanic depth with French tinged colour, it's counterpoint and lyricism showcasing a composer equally adept in complexity and folk-like charm. To conclude the album, Penderecki's Cadenza for solo viola is a sharp stylistic contrast, to the Brahms, yet draws a powerful message as a companion piece; it's exploration of the falling semitone motif covers a vast emotional spectrum with relentless virtuosity, culminating in pained, hoarsely whispered harmonics.

Schubert's three Sonatas for Violin and Fortepiano, Op. 137, may nod to Mozart in their delicacy, but their spirit is firmly rooted in the early Romantic imagination. Written in 1816, they seem to inhabit the intimate world of Lieder, where song-like melodies and expressive dialogues between violin and piano take centre stage. Violinist Peter Hanson and fortepianist Andrew Arthur bring these works to life on period instruments, revealing the subtle textures and nuanced interplay that modern pianos often obscure. Hanson's phrasing echoes the expressive lyricism of Schubert's vocal writing, while Arthur's fortepiano-modelled on an early 19th-century Walther & Sohn-illuminates the sonatas' delicate, shifting colours. This penultimate collection in Steven Devine's critically-acclaimed six-volume survey of the complete harpsichord works of Bach's favourite student, Johann Ludwig Krebs, features five of the six 'Galanterie-Suiten' [Galant Suites] that form the fourth part of Krebs' 'Clavierubung'. The complete set of six suites were published in 1746 and, although set in the classic framework of the Baroque Suite, actually feature the most up-to-date stylist features including, dramatic unison writing, charming 'cantabile' melodies and a wide range of stylish dance-forms. Krebs' use of titles pays direct hommage to his beloved teacher, but his harmonic and textural language offers us a fascinating insight into the changing fashions of musical taste and composers' attempts to keep with them.

Ned Rorem, renowned for his vivid art songs and unapologetic diaries, also composed a vast and underappreciated body of choral works. This album, featuring St Martin's Voices, showcases selections from his impressive choral output spanning seven decades. From the playful intricacies of Festive Alleluias (1992) to the lush harmonies of Two Psalms and a Proverb (1962), Rorem's music for chorus-often imbued with religious texts despite his devout atheism-reveals his gift for blending homophony with subtle counterpoint. The album includes pieces like the lyrical Sing my soul, his wondrous love (1955), the haunting Canticle of the Lamb (1971), and the entrancing O Magnum Mysterium (1978), offering a compelling cross-section of Rorem's choral imagination. With rich emotional depth, innovative text-setting, and surprising rhythmic shifts, these works-many previously overlooked-finally receive the attention they so richly deserve.

Bach and his contemporaries. Organist Matthew Owens continues his major exploration of the many extant organ works of Pachelbel with this fourth volume, recorded on a recent instrument by the renowned French organ builder, Bernard Aubertin. This recording sheds fresh light on Pachelbel's ingenious counterpoint and inventive chorale preludes, revealing layers of seventeenth-century Lutheran devotion and compositional mastery.

In A Brother Abroad, Martin Bussey's rich compositional voice vividly brings to life the fascinating figure of Peter of Bologna, a fourteenth-century Franciscan bishop. Ancient traditions, folklore, landscapes, and the natural world are central themes in the music of the distinguished Chinese composer Xiaogang Ye. This new album, performed by the Fidelio Trio and friends, spans over three decades of Ye's chamber works from 1989 to 2023. Known for his vast range of compositions, Ye's deep connection to his Chinese heritage is particularly evident here. His intricate use of instrumentation, rhythmic and melodic motifs, and dramatic forms come to life in these intimate settings. The album features a variety of ensembles and instruments, including the evocative traditional Chinese instrument, the pipa in Gardenia, highlighting Ye's ability to blend traditional Chinese elements with Western classical music. Each piece, from the lyrical Piano Trio Op. 59 to the vivid Nine Horses Op. 19, showcases Ye's mastery of timbral colour, rhythmic interplay, and melodic expression, offering listeners a fresh perspective on ancient myths and tales through a modern lens.

Keyboardist Steven Devine continues this complete survey of Johann Ludwig Krebs' significant contribution to the keyboard genre with the fourth volume in this series dedicated to the composer's keyboard works. In this album Krebs' profound understanding of musical process, honed during his eleven years within J.S. Bach's inner circle, comes alive. The compositions featured on this disc superficially show the parallels between Krebs and his master and teacher, whilst reflecting the more up-to-date musical style of Bach's sons. The Suite in C and the Six Sonatinas form parts two and three respectively of the Clavier-ubung (keyboard exercises): a four-part publication published in Nuremberg around 1744.

The Choir of St John's College, Oxford, directed by David Bannister, sings music associated with Christmas, together with youthful work by Imogen Holst and Benjamin Britten. Looking towards the sixtieth anniversary of Elizabeth Poston's Penguin Book of Carols (1965), initially undertaken with Ralph Vaughan Williams, the recording presents music associated with these two composers and the works they edited, alongside newer pieces exemplifying and revivifying the English carol tradition.

Cellist Robin Michael and pianist Daniel Tong present a captivating new recording of the complete works for cello and piano of Gabriel Faure, here presented for the first time on period instruments. Faure's compositions, from salon miniatures such as his elegie and Sicillienne, to his profound Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2, defy conventional categorisation. His harmonic sorcery, stretching beyond his contemporaries, unveils a language both contemporary and timeless. In these late masterpieces, themes from his opera Penelope intertwine with his personal journey, from childhood improvisations to his search for tranquility amid the horrors of war.

Spanning 900 years of musical history, this recording explores the concept of innocence and it's many connections to our changing ideas of faith, tradition, childhood and the natural world. Led by conductor Sarah Latto, Echo takes the listener on a journey through song, from Hildegard of Bingen and Maurice Ravel to ANOHNI, Morrissey, and Meredith Monk.

This album explores Johann Pachelbel's improvisational techniques and compositions, highlighting his use of variation, counterpoint, and chorale preludes. It features preludes, fugues, ricercars, and variations that showcase his mastery and educational methods.

Jonathan Dove (b. 1959) and Dame Judith Weir (b. 1954) may diverge in musical style, yet their organ compositions converge through evocative storytelling. On this album, their works for organ intertwine, revealing a shared fascination with the organ's pictorial prowess, particularly in the depiction of watery motifs. From Weir's turbulent Scottish river in Ettrick Banks, and her rugged yet ghostly depiction of traditional Eastern European folk instruments in The Wild Reeds, to Dove's jubilant celebrations of organ pipes in The Dancing Pipes, and the almost over-whelming force of his Niagara, each piece unfolds like a rich tapestry of sound. Organist Thomas Corns breathes life into these compositions, where theological reflections mingle with vibrant sonic imagery, and the organ becomes a palette for storytelling.

Charles Villiers Stanford felt a special affinity for the orchestral song, an idiom which began to establish itself as a distinct art form in it's own right at the end of the nineteenth century with composers such as Mahler, Richard Strauss, Elgar and Bantock. This recording, released to mark the composer's centenary year, features a wide selection of colourful and inventive orchestrations he made of his own songs and arrangements of Irish folk melodies for the concert hall, many of which were made for the leading soloists of the days such as Harry Plunket Greene, David Bispham, Marie Brema and Olga Michailoff (the wife of Henry Wood).

British composer Eleanor Alberga is renowned for her mastery of orchestral colour and form. With her distinctive blend of lyricism and rhythmic dynamism, Alberga crafts a sonic journey that is both exhilarating and deeply moving. From the arresting grandeur of the symphonic landscapes in her first symphony, Strata, to the pulsating and evocative energy of Mythologies, each piece is a testament to Alberga's boundless creativity. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Kemp, are joined by the Castalian String Quartet for Tower with it's cascading melodies and rhythmic intensity, embodying both strength and intimate intricacies.

Howard Skempton is recognized as one of the UK’s most renowned and respected living composers. Although particularly influenced by Benjamin Britten (with whom he worked), John Cage, and Cornelius Cardew, Skempton’s music inhabits its own unique sound world. His major new work, 50 Preludes and Fugues for Organ (written 2022-23), is given its world premiere recording by Matthew Owens on two of the finest organs in the UK, St George’s Church, Hanover Square, London, and Merton College, Oxford. Inspired by J.S. Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues, Skempton takes us on a contemporary journey in his own inimitable style and pays homage to Bach through two extra pairs of Preludes and Fugues. Additional works on this album include the composer’s earliest organ work, Wedding March (1971), and his latest, Recessional 2, written especially for this recording.

Widely recognised as the leading Welsh composer of his generation, Huw Watkins is an increasingly prolific writer of works for chamber ensembles, alongside his distinguished career as a pianist. Composed between 2009 and 2022, the five works featured on this disc take the listener on a fascinating journey through Watkins’s recent musical evolution. The acclaimed Leonore Piano Trio begin with the earliest of these works – the 2009 Piano Trio No. 1 – whilst conductor George Vass’s Orchestra Nova brings us the Little Symphony for strings and exquisite Concertino for violin and strings, performed here by trio violinist Benjamin Nabarro. The trio is joined by violist Rachel Roberts for Watkins’ luminous Piano Quartet, while the programme concludes with the 2022 Piano Trio No. 2 – written for the fortieth anniversary of the Presteigne Festival and premiered there by the Leonore Piano Trio.
