The young Swiss violinist David Nebel recorded under the direction of Kristjan Järvi exceptional works by two of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century: The rarely recorded Violin Concerto No.1 by American minimalist composer Philip Glass and Igor Stravinsky's neoclassical Violin Concerto in D.

When Glass (*1937) was a boy, the first instrument of his own that he had was a violin. However, Glass did not write his Violin Concerto No. 1 until his fiftieth year. It was his very first large-scale orchestral work, premiered in New York City on 5 April 1987. Glass composed the work for his father Ben Glass, as a piece that he thought his father might have liked had he lived to be able to hear it. The piece quickly became very popular with its exclamatory and exciting first movement, a sumptuous and brilliantly patient second movement and a thrilling third movement with perhaps the most captivating coda that Glass has ever written.

The Violin Concerto in D with four movements instead of the usual three was composed in Stravinsky’s (1882–1971) Neoclassical period in 1931. In this work Stravinsky explored the forms of Baroque music, especially the concerto grosso principle, and gave solo passages to the orchestral musicians in many places, where individual instruments are involved in charming dialogues with the solo violin.

Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto was recorded with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, and Glass’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Directed by Lino DiSalvo and based on the best-selling children's play sets, Playmobil: The Movie makes it's theatrical debut on August 30th, 2019. Mychael Danna is an Academy Award-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. His highly awarded works include the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning score for Ang Lee's Life of Pi, following his collaborations with Lee on The Ice Storm (1997) and Ride with the Devil (1999). Among his other awards are the Emmy for Outstanding Composition for the mini-series World Without End (2013), the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing (2013), the World Soundtrack Awards for Film Composer of the Year, and Best Score of the Year (both 2013), and the Hollywood Film Award for Composer of the Year (2016). Danna says his approach is to "making music an integral part of the storytelling, not simply repeating what is happening onscreen, but adding unexpected dimension and insight that enrich the experience of the director's vision." His passion for presenting complex ideas in a musically accessible way began as Danna learned his craft at the University of Toronto. There, he was exposed to early- and world-music that later influenced his style. Danna earned the school's inaugural Glenn Gould Composition Award in 1985 and also began scoring for student theatre groups, as he launched his artistic partnership with filmmaker Atom Egoyan. Danna has scored all of Egoyan's films since 1987's Family Viewing. Danna's credits also include the Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine (2006), for which he shared a Grammy Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album; Marc Webb's acclaimed romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer (2009); and James Mangold's Oscar-winning film, Girl, Interrupted (1999). Mychael also scored the Oscar-nominated Pixar short preceding the film, Sanjay's Super Team. Other celebrated collaborations include those with Bennett Miller on his Oscar-nominee Moneyball (2011) and his Oscar-winning drama Capote (2005); with Terry Gilliam on his oscar nominated The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) and Tideland (2005). "The most gratifying filmmaking experiences are ones that take effort to unpeel the layers surrounding the heart of the story, and to find the best musical expression of that heart, " says Danna. "Those are always the film scores that I am most proud of."

Mediterranean and Nordic Christmas music with Arianna Savall and her Baroque ensemble Hirundo MarisSince the founding of their ensemble in 2009, Hirundo Maris, the Catalan harpist and singer Arianna Savall, and the Norwegian tenor and violist Petter Udland Johansen have committed themselves to music from the Middle Ages up to the Baroque period. And a special emphasis has been Mediterranean and Nordic music. For their current album, “Silent Night – Early Christmas Music and Carols” both musicians and ensemble conductors have chosen traditional Christmas songs from the north and south. And in doing so, invite you along on a journey of sound into the magical world of centuries-old winter, Advent, and Christmas music.The German song “Silent Night” is laid out on the program alongside the Norwegian Christmas song “Mitt hjerte alltid vanker”, the Provençal “Ô nuit brillante” and the Catalonish, “El cant dels ocells”, which the legendary early music pioneer Jordi Savall, Arianna Savalls famous father, orchestrated for the recording.“Every country has its own Christmas traditions and its own treasure trove of Christmas songs” says the musician from the Hirundo Maris ensemble (the ensemble name is the Latin term for “sea swallow”). “Some of them, like “Silent Night” are known throughout the world and are translated in numerous languages, but many of these songs have remained hidden in their home countries like a national treasure. Hirundo Maris now showcases many such musical treasures in imaginative compositions that fuse the old with the present day.The expressive voices of Arianna Savall and Petter Udland Johansen give rise to an atmospheric dialogue with multifaceted instrumental parts. On the Sony Classical label - This is the x26 song, original motion picture soundtrack to the highly anticipated film "Little Women" by the ten-time Oscar nominated and two-time Oscar winning film composer Alexandre Desplat. "Little Women" is based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott and stars a number of critically acclaimed actors including Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep. In addition to all of his work with filmmaker Wes Anderson, Desplat credits include the music to The King’s Speech, Argo, The Imitation Game, The Shape of Water and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

It was an awakening experience when Christoph Koncz, principal violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor, first held Mozart’s original concert violin in his hands. This was the violin on which Mozart had played as concertmaster in the Salzburg Hofkapelle: a Baroque violin that was carefully preserved after Mozart’s death and treated almost as a holy relic. The idea of recording Mozart’s five violin concertos for the first time on the composer’s own concert violin was one that Christoph Koncz found irresistibly fascinating. “There’s a close connection between these concertos and this instrument, and Mozart’s own experience of this violin undoubtedly inspired him greatly. In his violin concertos he was fond of using the instrument’s upper tessitura and coloratura register, which is where his violin sounds particularly beautiful.” – Christoph Koncz

Leonard Bernstein led his New York players in electrifying recordings of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies in the 1960s and early 70s. This cycle for American Columbia includes Bernstein’s only versions on disc of the first three symphonies as well as superb performances of No. 4 – “Big, rich, boldly colorful engineering does justice to … its impulsive opening movement, dazzling scherzo, and ebullient finale” (ClassicsToday) – and No. 6: “There have been some high-powered Pathétique performances on record, but none higher-powered than this. Bernstein excels himself … The recording is bright and brilliant to match the interpretation” (Gramophone). Sony Music announces the release of THE HUSTLE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by composer ANNE DUDLEY (The Full Monty, American History X, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). "THE HUSTLE is based on one of my favorite films Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and, in a nod to this, my score takes as it's starting point the music of The Hot Club of France," says composer ANNE DUDLEY of the soundtrack. Between 1987 and 1989, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra made an acclaimed complete recording for RCA Victor of the symphonies and other major works by their compatriot Sibelius. Sony Classical is now issuing them together for the first time in a budget-priced 8-album box set. Gramophone wrote that “these are impressive, well characterized performances … Saraste is very much the servant of the composer … Momentum and continuity and the placing of detail in the right perspective in relation to the overall architecture are paramount considerations in Sibelius, and Saraste maintains an impressive flow.”

At once harrowing and hilarious, Oscar® nominee and Emmy® winner Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the troubled titular character.ABOUT THE COMPOSERHauschka (Volker Bertelmann) is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who uses prepared piano as his primary instrument. The prepared piano refers to the technique of resting pieces of paper, marbles, drumsticks and other objects on the strings to produce odd, sometimes randomly generated sounds, that move the instrument in unexpected directions. Hauschka grew up in Germany in the village of Ferndorf, in the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein, North Rhine-Westphalia. The thousand-year-old village was small, with a population of about 1,000 people. He started taking piano lessons when he was nine and in high school, he played in a cover band that won a local Battle of the Bands contest. Being a musician was not an acceptable career path in his family, so Hauschka studied medicine at University in Cologne, although he was still playing in bands. Just before graduation, he examined his career choices and dropped out to do music full time. His first venture was a hip-hop band called God’s Favorite Dog, with his cousin Oliver Lodge-Philips. They had a couple of minor hits and got picked up and dropped by a major label. After experimenting with some avant garde aspect of techno music in a band called Tonetraeger with Torsten “TG” Mauss Hauschka eventually moved to Düsseldorf where he decided to go solo and began to compose contemporary music for piano by combining elements of both classical and pop music traditions.Substantial, Hauschka’s first solo album, blended classical, avant-garde and pop impulses, with an aura of measured melancholy. Then he discovered prepared piano. His experiments with this new instrument changed his approach to music and composing, setting him on a journey of exploration that continues to this day. His albums of prepared piano music include The Prepared Piano, a solo record of spontaneous improvisations; Ferndorf, featuring arrangements for cello, trombone, violin and piano; Salon des Amateurs, with drummers Samuli Kosminen (múm), and Joey Burns and John Convertino (Calexico); Silfra, an improvised collaboration with classical violinist Hilary Hahn.  In 2014 Hauschka released Abandoned City which was followed by A NDO C Y, a collection of solo improvisations from the Abandoned City sessions and two extended remixes from the Abandoned City album - “Agdam” by Devandra Banhart and “Stromness” by Eluvium as well as 2.11.2014, a live album that includes two 20-minute improvisations for prepared piano, based on the music from Abandoned City.Hauschka’s latest release, What if (2017) finds him adding player pianos to his armoury, something that he has also been exploring in his live performances following the album’s release.  Furthermore, Hauschka also has for the last few years built a prolific career in writing scores for films. Among Hauschka’s earlier film scores are Praia du Futuro, a Brazilian love story centered on two gay men which became controversial in its home country, Farewell, Herr Schwarz which touches on German/Jewish history and holocaust themes in a mystical way and Craig Macneill’s film The Boy, about a child who grows up to become a mass murderer. Hauschka’s big breakthrough in the field came though with his collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran in scoring Lion (2016), directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.
