In previous issues I've praised the Abegg Trio's radiant performances of Beethoven's piano trios. This convenient set of the Mendelssohn's works in this form - two by Felix and one by Fanny, composed the year after her brother's second trio - elicits comparable enthusiasm, thanks to the brilliance of the renditions, individually and collectively... The recorded sound is first-rate therein and throughout the two more familiar scores as well. As previously noted, too, a B�sendorfer Imperial piano, played with some restraint by Gerrit Zitterbart and admirably balanced in this CD, adds a measure of richness not often encountered among other practitioners of the art of piano-trio playing. That said, this Tacet CD sports an attractive lineup as well, and although there are many fine recorded performances of both of Felix's piano trios, these merit inclusion among the very best, due to the Abegg's superior playing, seasoned interpretations, and the splendid recorded sound. Erika Haase continues her ambitious project of recording the most significant etudes of piano literature. This time she has tackled the etudes by Franz Liszt. The daredevil difficulties for the pianist playing these works are legend. She masters them with bravura and enriches them with her own highly sensitive musical note.

The cycle presented here, which refers to Bach's "Well-tempered Clavier", of course not only in the title, is presented so euphoniously and with such virtuosity by the two Swabian artists that I can quite confidently recommend this album as one of the most interesting classical guitar productions of recent years....

Twice Brahms worked on his first piano trio [op. 8]: In 1854, when he put it to paper and 1889, when he worked on it again and thoroughly revised it. Both versions have their merit and, more importantly still, their own specific musical charm. This applies particularly to the finely chiselled interpretations by the Abegg Trio. Fono Forum)

Each of the three compositions are played with such delineation of style and weight of texture that it's almost as if each piece had been recorded by a different ensemble. Mozart's Flute Quartets appear on this DVD with excellent sound, and with the instrumentalists situated around the listener, which has become the trademark of the TACET label. The result is a chamber music tonal picture in which all the instruments are of equal importance and the flute does not force itself to the fore. Musically the recording is also remarkable; (crescendo) TACET's creative use of this multichannel medium takes Mozart's lovely Baroque background music out of the soporific and into the energetic. With their recording of the piano trio op. 1 by Hermann Goetz and the fifth piano trio op. 34 by Friedrich Kiel, the Abegg Trio have drawn our attention to two works which have not only not deserved to be neglected, but can rank with the loveliest, yes, happiest works of their genre. Both works are in Mendelssohn's tradition and are comparable with the two Mendelssohn trios both in level and in intonation. They are rich compositions, masterfully worked, present rich, lively thematic material; and have minstrel-like verve. The Abegg Trio masters all the demands of the two works, both the sparkling passage work on the piano and the flowing song on the strings. Also, the ensemble avoided unnecessary emphasis with both works: rather, it found a middle way between naivety and sophistication, from which the tone of these compositions arises. (Fono Forum)
