The special vibrations that the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival generates are directly audible in the contents of this anniversary CD box, which consists solely of live performances. The choice of music ranges far and wide through all periods and genres: from Johann Sebastian Bach through key works of the Viennese Classical school and the German Romantics to French Impressionist compositions and classics of the Modern era. There are jazz numbers and contemporary works too, a further pointer to the ethos of the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival, which does not call for tradition to be upheld on principle but aims at a constant rediscovery of the world and it's inhabitants through their sounds and timbres, no matter whether they come from "old" or "new", "serious" or "light" music. Hohenstaufen doesn't pigeonhole things like that; it believes in taking your partners to make "good" music. Music is good, quite simply, when it moves us, uplifts us, challenges us. "Music must never be comfy," to quote the pithy conclusion that Helmuth Rilling, to whom the Festival is greatly indebted, once drew. "It must stir people, touch them personally, give them food for thought." If the pieces brought together here can achieve this, the Hohenstaufen Chamber Music Festival will have received the biggest twentieth birthday present it could have.

The grandeur of Mozart's Missa solemnis in C minor 'Waisenhausmesse' caused Viennese scholars to doubt how it could have been composed by a twelve-year old boy. The Mass was written for the consecration of a new Orphanage Church in Vienna with an expanded orchestra, and it's premiere was conducted by Mozart himself 'to the general approbation and admiration of everyone'. Mozart often made use of the purity of C major in his Masses - the Missa brevis is a remarkable model of compactness, while the Missa solemnis is Mozart's last complete Mass.

How can we live without Mozart's music? It has the power to change our lives and our view of the world. Mozart is a necessity. As children, we already listened to him, and this growing complicity lent itself particularly well to the game of dreaming. Who hasn't whispered to themselves, �What if...�? This is how we imagined Wolfgang travelling to Japan. This uchrony gave us the idea of combining our instruments with the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument, and uniting the two piano quartets with transcriptions of overtures from his operas and pieces written specifically for this project by two great Japanese composers. This journey offers an open view of a Japan so little known in Mozart's time, thanks to five imaginary letters written by the erudite and facetious writer Richard Collasse, author of the Dictionnaire amoureux du Japon and novels set in Japan. Finally, this strange odyssey bears witness to Mozart's infinite source of inspiration for artistic creation, with illustrations by Setsuko Klossowska de Rola and those made by her late husband, the painter Balthus, for the sets of Cosi fan tutte in 1959. What if Mozart had gone to Japan? Let's read and listen.

The Austrian-Croatian conductor Milan Turkovic, who also has an unparalleled career as a bassoonist, presents a varied Mozart program with the Wiener Concert-Verein chamber orchestra. Turkovic has been particularly interested in preserving the Viennese sound tradition not only since his time with the Concentus Musicus under Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In addition to the world-famous Serenade No. 13 in G major K. 525, also known as "Eine kleine Nachtmusik", this latest CD entitled "Nachtmusik" (Night Music) includes the Divertimento in D major K. 136 and the Symphony No. 39 in E major K. 543, which belongs to the group of the last three symphonies. You can expect Viennese sound tradition "at it's best".

Nathan Granner presents tenor arias by Paer, Mozart, Gluck, Salieri and Bologne, showcasing the rise of the tenor in the late eighteenth century, as well as the Enlightened spirit of the age. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, under the baton of Clelia Caffiero, partners with Granner to navigate a vast emotional landscape of classical period arias producing a timeless and compelling musical experience. Nathan Granner enjoys a unique and diverse performing career, allowing him to leverage his golden age timbre in many projects and productions. He returns to PENTATONE after having sung the title role in a highlights recording of Gordon Getty's opera Goodbye, Mr. Chips (2022), of which a complete recording with Granner in the same role will appear on the label in 2025. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille has appeared on PENTATONE multiple times, on albums ranging from Martinu Double Concertos with the Kodama and Nemtanu sisters to re-citals by Lisa Delan and Kevin Short (all in 2018). Clelia Caffiero makes her PENTATONE debut.

One of Gubaidulina's special merits is that at the end of the 1970s she discovered the sound characteristics and expressive possibilities of the bayan, a button accordion that had previously only been popular as a folk music instrument in Russia, and established it as an instrument of contemporary music through numerous inspired compositions. She was supported and accompanied in this endeavour by bayan performers such as Friedrich Lips in Moscow and the Swiss Elsbeth Moser, who taught in Hanover. The creation of the Triple Concerto for violin, cello and bayan can be traced back to a suggestion by Elsbeth Moser. For the five movements of the duo composition Rejoice! For violin and cello (1981), Gubaidulina chose various quotations from the writings of the Ukrainian 'travelling philosopher' Grigori Skoworoda (1722-1794), who called for poverty and self-deepening as a prerequisite for finding God. The composer explained: "The theme of my work is the metaphorical representation of the transition to another reality, expressed through the juxtaposition of normal sound and harmonics." Due to the unmistakable religious references it was not possible to premiere the work until 1988 and the premiere took place in Finland.

Director Martin Kusej moves the drama of love and jealousy to a mafia-like urban milieu where conflicts are fought out with pistols. Young French conductor Raphael Pichon, "original sound expert" (Der Tagesspiegel) and for the first time on the podium of the Wiener Philharmoniker, leads a young ensemble of singers around clan boss Almaviva ("vocally flawlessly brilliant: Andre Schuen", Hamburger Abendblatt). "Kusej's staging is musical, Pichon's conducting theatrical; the two work together to a degree that is far more rare than it should be. Mozart's flute concertos are of course a Holy Grail for flutist Francois Lazarevitch, one that he has decided to tackle together with his ensemble Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien in connection with their work on sources of interpretation. He has recorded the two concertos for flute and orchestra on a one-keyed flute, a copy of an instrument made in Mozart's time, and the concerto in C for flute and harp on an eight-keyed flute - a flute with a C foot - with Sandrine Chatron playing a period harp by Francois-Joseph Naderman. As Mozart left no original cadenzas for the flute concertos, Francois Lazarevitch has here created his own, drawing inspiration from the cadenzas Mozart composed for his piano concertos. The Menuets and Gavottes in the final movements are particularly highlighted by the ensemble's expertise in music for dancing: "after a first movement that is a little solemn and a second that is more lyrical, the final movements are often a moment for release in dance," concludes Lazarevitch.

Mozart was 22 when he travelled to Paris in 1778, accompanied by his mother. Although he did not achieve the success he had hoped for, his visit to Paris was a major turning point in his personal life and artistic development. Marked by the disillusionment that led him to despise the Parisian public and by the tragedy of losing his mother, his sonatas for pianoforte are tinged with an intense gravity, mirroring the inner turmoil experienced by the young prodigy. At the same time, the castrato Albanese charmed the capital with his Romances, which were popular with the public and from which Mozart drew some of his inspiration. Arnaud de Pasquale, at the keyboard of a superb replica of a 1749 Silbermann pianoforte, takes us back to the Paris of the 1770s, where musical practice was nothing but effervescent, and invites us, with grace and sensitivity, into the tormented intimacy of the genius.

Don Giovanni was commissioned by the Prague Opera immediately after the success of The Marriage of Figaro: Mozart and Da Ponte chose a subject that had just triumphed a few weeks earlier in Venice, Giuseppe Gazzaniga's Don Giovanni. Taking up the theme of The Deceiver of Seville, which had already been very popular in the theatre since the mid-seventeenth century, Da Ponte focused his work on the libertine character of Don Juan, no doubt inspired by his famous friend Casanova. The result is dazzling, never leaving the spectator the slightest respite between murders, scenes of seduction, cunning and fantastic apparitions: here is a grand spectacle served by extraordinary music, an absolute masterpiece, to which Prague gave an exceptional triumph. Marshall Pynkoski takes the characters here in a dramatic whirlwind dressed in Christian Lacroix's fantasies: Robert Gleadow finally takes on the role of Don Giovanni; and Gaetan Jarry makes the Orchestre de l'Opera Royal shine.

A diverse survey of Mozart's 'occasional' music, including his grandest serenade as well as one of his earliest and strangest works, alongside two late and powerful masterpieces. The 'Posthorn' Serenade of Mozart has been recorded on many occasions, but perhaps never with such stimulating and contrasted couplings as this new recording from the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice under their Armenian music director, Vahan Mardirossian. These forces recently made an attractive album of Mozart's 'Lodron' divertimenti (97307); now they turn to the grandest of the serenades which Mozart composed while still in the service of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. The 'Posthorn' Serenade dates from 1779, and the harmony of it's grand introduction immediately belongs to the richly ambivalent world of mature Mozart. Everything here is calculated to entertain, such as the graceful pairs of minuets, and the extensive 'concertante' movement featuring a cadenza for solo winds, but beyond that there is a uniquely Mozartian pathos which emerges most strongly in the D minor Andantino. Little within Mozart's output could present a stronger contrast than the patchwork of dances and tunes compiled by the 10-year-old composer while convalescing after a serious illness in The Hague. Commissioned for a piece to celebrate the accession of William V as Prince of Orange, he produced this 17-movement 'Gallimathias Musicum'. By turn, the album then makes a characteristically Mozartian shift to the grave tread of the Masonic Funeral Music composed in memory of the composer's Masonic brothers in 1785. No less imposing in it's way is the Fugue in C minor which Mozart originally wrote for two pianos in December 1783. Rescoring it for strings in June 1788, he added a stern and prefatory Adagio. Known as the Adagio and Fugue K546, this has been recorded by forces ranging from string quartet to full symphony orchestra; the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra presents a compelling middle way. - A substantial part of Mozart's oeuvre consists of works that may be called 'entertainment music'. Most of these pieces were composed for festive occasions in Salzburg, such as name days, birthdays and other festivities. There are indications that a number of them were meant to be played out-of-doors, in a rustic garden setting with party guests enjoying a drink or a meal. Many of the easy-going works were labelled 'Divertimento', others 'Serenade', 'Cassation' or 'Notturno'. - Mozart's Posthorn Serenade, composed in 1779, is one of his best known and most successful Serenades. The serenade's name is derived from the prominent solo for posthorn, a valveless brass instrument used in postal services during Mozart's time. It's five movements blend elegance with lively rhythms. From the graceful Andante to the spirited Menuetto, it abounds in melodic richness, charm, infectious brilliance and wit. - Also included in this recording are the lighthearted Gallimatthias musicumKV32, the moving Maurerische Trauermusik KV477 and the Adagio & Fuga KV546. - Played in Historically Informed Performance Practice on modern instruments by the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice, conducted by Vahan Mardirossian.
