Music and song have had an impact throughout time and the Civil War was no exception. During the Civil War, music and musical instruments served a practical purpose. Drums were used to keep soldiers in line. Fifes were popular instruments because they could be heard over cannon noise. And bugles were used as a way to issue commands. Songs from the Civil War served many purposes. They were used to tell stories, be it a soldier's or a slave's. Certain songs were used to inspire troops, while other songs were about a soldier missing home or about people at home missing a soldier. The Civil War was a turbulent time in American history and much was lost. Fortunately, most of the music and songs survived.

UNITED STATES MARINE DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS: Esprit

The Sea Chanters, the 17-voice chorus of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., was organized in 1956, as an all male chorus specializing in songs of the sea. Female voices were added in 1980 and their repertoire was expanded. They perform throughout the United States, and often perform at the White House, Vice President's house and for Washington dignitaries. In 1994, the chorus provided music at the funerals of former President Nixon in Yorba Linda, California, and former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis at Arlington National Cemetery.

The mission of the U.S. Army Band is to inspire America's soldiers and citizens with music. The men and women of this esteemed musical organization accomplish this mission thousands of times each year during performances in the nation's capital, throughout the country and around the world. Established by General of the Armies John J. Pershing in 1922, the U.S. Army Band is the official musical organization for many diplomatic and state functions at the White House, the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol, at Arlington National Cemetery, and at the Tomb of the Unknown. Leading every Presidential Inaugural Parade since 1925, the U.S. Army Band, known a "Pershing's Own," has also represented the Nation at miliary ceremonies and special events around the world including the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, The Kennedy Center Honors National Telecast and the opening of the 1984 and 1996 Olympic Games. The U.S. Marine Band, "The President's Own," has performed for every presidential inauguration since Thomas Jefferson. From the earliest days of the Nation, the Marine Band's primary mission has been to provide music for the President of the United States. Whether performing for South Lawn arrival ceremonies, State dinners, receptions or accompanying famous entertainers, Marine musicians appear at the Executive Mansion more than 200 times annually.
