Vinyl LP pressing. Ballads is a jazz album by John Coltrane. It was recorded in December 1961 and 1962. Critic Gene Lees stated that the quartet had never played the tunes before. "They arrived with music-store sheet music of the songs" and just before the recordings, they "would discuss each tune, write out copies of the changes they'd use, semi-rehearse for a half hour and then do it". Each piece was recorded in one take, except for "All or Nothing at All".

Baker leans into light and easy-listening territory. His renditions of the Beatles' "Something" and the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" gives some indication as to who he was intending to appeal to. On a different note, Baker's rendition of "Come Saturday Morning," a song that received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, is moving and highlights his unique vocal approach. Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the States. He would soon permanently move to Europe where he was better appreciated. Webster's tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay." Recorded for Impulse in 1967, a session originally intended to be a trio date morphed into an 11 ½-minute duet on "Summertime" between drummer Jones and bassist Davis when the guitarist did not appear. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined in to round out the rest of the cuts including "Elvin's Guitar Blues," which features Jones' only recorded guitar performance.
