She knew he wanted them for her.

Mrs. Morel came of a good old burgher family…

She had told him before…

He began to be rather late…

So Morel would go on…

The two had dinner in the Meadows…

The moon was high and magnificent…

Chapter 2: The birth of Paul and another battle.

The sound was heard…

Mrs. Morel had a visit every day…

Mrs. Morel looked down at him.

Morel, bothered, had succeeded…

He closed the door behind him…

Chapter 3: The casting off of Morel.

They called the baby Arthur.

William, who was a tall lad…

There ended the altercation.

Chapter 4: The young life of Paul.

So they were happy in the morning…

But the best time for the young children…

Paul loved to sleep with his mother.

Paul knew his turn was next…

She started. Her heart hardened…

They were brought exceedingly close together…

Everybody was mad with excitement.

Chapter 5: Paul launches into life.

Mrs. Morel took off her bonnet.

And then, at ten o'clock, he set off.

The sixteen slow miles of railway journey…

He hated the little man…

In the morning he filled in the form…

Paul was led round to a very dark corner.

And Paul ran upstairs after his chief.

Again, and Paul could understand him least…

Chapter 6: Death in the family.

In such a household, in Streatham…

At Easter he came over alone.

They found a little gate…

The boys felt hostile to him…

She never got beyond the second page.

He wanted to come home.

Paul wandered out to the pit…

Paul saw drops of sweat fall from his father…

PART II: Chapter 7: Lad-and-girl love.

Miriam was moving about preparing dinner.

The nest seemed to start into life…

Away he went.

She seemed very bitter.

He was studying for his painting.

He was hurt…

In Ilkeston the colliers were waiting…

The manor is of hard, pale grey stone…

Miriam was startled.

Miriam picked up her books…

Only when he sketched…

Chapter 8: Strife in love.

To console his mother…

Clara Dawes had no children.

He lighted his bicycle-lamp…

And he, coming home from his walks…

Annie, who had been teaching away…

Both colliers sat away back.

Miriam put her feet from under her dress.

When they had all gone…

He was not home again until a quarter to eleven…

He could not bear it.

Chapter 9: Defeat of Miriam.

She was stunned by his cruelty…

He was telling her he did not love her…

Miriam was indignant…

One Sunday evening…

Clara sat leaning on the table…

Miriam came for him a little later…

Clara did not answer…

At this time Paul took his mother to Lincoln…

Annie, too, was getting married.

Mrs. Morel sat brooding…

Miriam had one beautiful evening…

Chapter 10: Clara

Paul and his mother now had long discussions…

The months went slowly along.

Clara suffered badly from her mother.

Clara glanced round negligently.

He went down the half-dozen steps...

The pigeons in the pockets of rock…

The afternoon was so gently warm…

Chapter 11: The test on Miriam

He went on determinedly.

As she stood under the drooping…

Miriam came out wondering.

In a while they went indoors.

He spent the week with Miriam…

At last he spoke.

There was silence for a moment or two…

She laughed strangely

Chapter 12: Passion

Slowly the hours crawled.

They were at the entrance to the Grove.

He stood erect, looking round.

He took her by the arm…

Another day, when he saw Miriam…

So he chattered…

At tea Clara felt the refinement…

They parted. He felt guilty towards her.

And he plunged ahead into the darkness.

The play went on.

Soon the supper was finished…

Then he stood, arrested.

Chapter 13: Baxter Dawes

Paul would have died…

The smith looked down contemptuously…

One evening they were walking down by…

When she saw him that day…

She went plodding heavily over the sand…

So there went on a battle between them.

It was true as he said.

Dawes, grunting with pain like a beast…

Paul was very gay…

His mother could come downstairs for tea…

Paul put eight sovereigns and half a sovereign...

Chapter 14: The Release

Dawes lay thinking.

Paul and she were afraid of each other.

In the morning they were both normal again.

This was the first time…

December came, and some snow.

She was reared up in bed…

And in a few minutes Paul heard his father's…

He was still with her when the undertakers…

Morel saw the wrist and the white hand…

Morel sat down.

Chapter 15: Derelict

So the weeks went on.

Miriam took off her things and looked round.

She bowed her head in silence.

She stood before the mirror…
