The twelve-song set features 10 originals by Vilray, along with two covers from the era that inspired him: Cuban composer Pedro Junco Jr.'s 1943 "Nosotros" and Milton Drake/Louis Atler's "I Love the Way You're Breaking My Heart," first popularized by Peggy Lee. Price and Vilray, who began performing together in 2015, recorded the album with Lake Street Dive pianist Akie Bermiss, a rhythm section, and a small complement of horns, plus a guest performance from pianist Jon Batiste on "Go On Shining." Saxophonist Clio Theodoridis and pianist Jonathan Nemtanu present their debut album, Nostos, named after the ancient Greek word for "return" or "homecoming." The album traces a musical and personal odyssey shaped by movement between cultures, places, and musical traditions. From Suite hellenique by Pedro Iturralde, rooted in Greek heritage and Mediterranean colour, to Recit et Lied, Op. 31 by Canadian composer Mathieu Lussier, the program reflects a life lived between past and present, departure and arrival. Works by Fazil Say, Suite for Saxophone and Piano, Op. 55, and Alexis Ciesla, Ocres rouges, further occupy musical crossroads between East and West, tradition and innovation, forming a cohesive program that highlights the expressive range of the saxophone-piano duo. Born in Athens and now based in Quebec, Clio Theodoridis is recognized for the finesse and depth of her playing across the classical saxophone repertoire. Pianist Jonathan Nemtanu combines an active career as a chamber musician with cultural leadership, and is noted for his musical dialogue and artistic vision. Together, they perform as Duo Aster.
The enacting of the Alhambra edict in 1492 caused a forced migration of Spain’s remaining Jews. With them traveled the liturgical texts of poets from Spain’s “Jewish golden age”, and all the music that today preserves the oral tradition, songs and poems of medieval Hispanic culture. This release represents a part of that musical legacy, a fragment of the tradition and the history of the Sephardic Diaspora. Founded in 1987, the renowned Capella de Ministrers ensemble, directed by Carles Magraner, offers historical rigor, musical sensibility and, unparalleled communicative abilities.

Let Us Clap is a bold tribute to the sisterhood of Lamisi's homeland. Deep in Northern Ghana, women and girls have long kept time with intricate handclaps and harmonised chants - an age-old folkloric tradition pulsing with polyrhythms and ancestral melodies. This isn't just music; it's history, passed down through generations, raw and untouched. The album was co-written with Ghanaian icon Wanlov the Kubolor.

Luz Del Alva: Spanish Songs And Instrumental Music Of The Early Renaissance
Ramee
CD
$20.99Nov 13, 2012
The reign of the Catholic Monarchs - corresponding to the last decades of the 15th and the first decades of the 16th century - laid the foundation for Spain's power and prosperity in Early Modern Europe. Those were the days of Christopher Columbus's expeditions, but also the days of the War of Granada and the expulsion of Jews from Spain... This stormy period in Spanish history has left a rich musical legacy. An essential part of it is the vast repertoire of Spanish secular art song written to amatory, political propaganda, philosophical and devotional texts. Most of this repertoire was written down the manuscript widely known as Cancionero Musical de Palacio. With more than 450 pieces composed over several decades by several generations of both identified and anonymous composers, Cancionero Musical de Palacio 'towers above every other secular monument of Spanish Renaissance musical history' (Robert Stevenson). Arianna Savall, Petter Johansen, Corina Marti, Michal Gondko and Tore Eketorp join forces to bring their public the gems of this madly beautiful music, which - according to the contemporary witness - was once 'all the rage' among members of the aristocratic society of the Early Renaissance Spain. An extremely 'easy-o-the ear-going' programme, with Arianna Savall's touching singing coming straight from the heart.
Heritage Prokofiev: Symphony No 5; Bartok / George Szell
Sony Masterworks
CD
$11.98Jun 29, 1999
Critics have unfairly accused George Szell of not embracing 20th century music during his tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra. This is nonsense; Szell frequently commissioned works by young composers and championed music by Janacek, Hindemith, Bartók and Prokofiev. This recording, an entry in the Masterworks Heritage series, features Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra in Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra and Prokofiev's Symphony no. 5. Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation and premiered in 1944. Szell leads a dazzling performance of this colorful work. The orchestra's soloists shine in the tricky second movement, while the mysterious elegy that comprises the third movement is brilliantly realized. Szell also brings true Hungarian spirit to the fiery finale, with the Cleveland Orchestra's brass playing grandiosely. Prokofiev's Symphony was written towards the end of World War II and is considered by many to be one of his finest works. The work is filled with soaring melodies, a touch of melancholy, and an epic finale. Szell and the orchestra deliver a virtuoso performance, brilliantly communicating the piece's shifting moods and grand nature.
With her debut album, Julia Lozowska compellingly affirms her place among the most distinctive pianists of her generation. This recording is far more than a display of virtuosity-it is a finely shaped artistic statement of remarkable depth, clarity, and refinement. Lozowska combines technical brilliance with a rare intellectual and emotional insight into the music, illuminating it's hidden structures-tonal relationships, motifs, and compositional sources of inspiration-with exceptional sensitivity and precision. The selection of well-known, large-scale works unfolds in her interpretation with an almost narrative force. Within expansive, imaginatively shaped forms, the album guides the listener through a deeply immersive emotional journey: from romantic unrest and longing, through moments of introspection and reflection, to a state of calm resolution and an ultimately hopeful, forward-looking perspective.

Sebastian Berner is one of the most prominent trumpet players of his generation: in 2022, he won first prize at the Maurice André International Competition in Paris and is principal trumpet of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. While Henri Tomasi's trumpet concerto, composed in 1948, is fairly well known, the Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra, composed in 1913 by the Belgian Joseph Jongen, is much rarer, and the concerto by his pupil Léon Stekke, dated July 1937, is being recorded for the first time. Another world premiere is Charles Koechlin's Chants de Kervéléan, transcribed in 2008 for trumpet and orchestra by Robert Orlidge. Finally, Florent Schmitt's Suite in Three Parts was premiered in it's orchestral version in 1956 by Maurice André.

Capella De Minstrers
CD
$20.99Oct 22, 2021
Capella de Ministrers, whether intentionally or not, are reclaiming their Mediterranean personality. This is nothing new and it is something they have stood up for throughout their career, bringing it to the stage in their live performances and in their fifty recordings. The idea of the Mediterranean is not exclusively geographical in nature, it is rather a philosophy relating to the way in which music survives culturally. It all begins on land, of course, but eyes turn towards the sea in a poetic extension which is as natural as it is creative. The sea sparks the imagination and reaches places where a fresh gaze and dialogue enrich musical and historical understanding. On this occasion, the sea takes us to Italy and specifically to Naples where emotions spark off in many different directions.

"This set brings together all the recordings by Taos Amrouche originally released on the Arion label. The 5CDs propose an unrivalled synthesis of our knowledge of the artistry and oral culture contained in these neglected gems from the Mediterranean regions: the Berber songs of Kabylia, and Spanish songs of ancient times. The Amrouche family – both Taos and her brother Jean – have enjoyed an extraordinary destiny: having perfectly assimilated French culture, they have at the same time spread and enhanced the glorious cultural heritage of their Berber ancestors. Thanks to Taos Amrouche and Laurence Bourdil-Amrouche, herdaughter and heir, these poems and songs have been saved from oblivion, as testified by this boxed-set and its 88-page booklet, a precious document for generations to come." A Musical Journey - Spain: A Musical Visit to Madrid, La Man
Naxos AudioVisual
DVD
$13.99Aug 28, 2012
The Places: The musical tour of Spain starts at the present capital, Madrid, the principal city of Castile. From Madrid it is not too far to the plains of La Mancha, a region always remembered for it's association with the great hero of Miguel Cervantes, Don Quijote de la Mancha, whose windmills, mistaken by him for giants, form a characteristic element in the landscape. The varied history of Spain is seen in the city of Cordoba, once capital of a Moorish kingdom, and the gardens of the Alcazar of the Christian Kings. The Music: The music chosen for the tour of Spain may be characteristically Spanish in it's rhythms and turns of melody, but is all the work of foreigners, two of the composers, Chabrier and Massenet, French, and two of them, Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov, Russian. For France, geographically adjacent to Spain, there was an obvious connection with Spain, which continued to exercise a certain fascination over it's neighbor. Russian composers in the 19th century embarked on the creation of a new national music, but at the same time drew on remoter countries for inspiration, whether on the different regions of the vast Russian Empire or still further afield.
This second volume of the Flemish Musical Heritage series focuses on art songs by Gustave Huberti (1843-1910). Songs are performed by two leading Belgian singers (soprano and baritone). Texts are in German, Dutch and French. The result is a pleasant portrait of a gifted composer in his different life periods.
