Flore Benguigui & The Sensible Notes / With i-330, Flore Benguigui delivers a manifesto of artistic and feminine emancipation. While the album's title draws it's inspiration from Yevgeny Zamyatin's dystopian novel We, the music itself dissolves the boundaries of time: between 1930s swing and electronic textures, jazz and pop are joyfully reinvented with playful elegance. Recorded live at Studio Pigalle, i-330 breathes spontaneity, warmth and shared joy, carried by a predominantly female collective - The Sensible Notes. Together, they breathe new life into hidden gems by Nat King Cole and Margo Guryan, as well as treasures from French chanson, blending gentleness, boldness and luminous melancholy. More than a record, i-330 is a vibrant refuge - a poetic, timeless space where jazz, free and sensitive, rediscovers it's liberating power.
Vinyl LP pressing. Trumpeter Donald Byrd and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams had a formidable partnership throughout the early 1960s, making a series of highly regarded hard bop albums. Yet somehow this masterful quintet session from April 1961 (which also features Herbie Hancock, sounding exceptionally fine on his very first Blue Note recording session) remained unreleased for nearly 20 years. Of particular note are Herbie's playing on "Great God" and the sophisticated excellence the entire ensemble brings.

Acclaimed guitarist Craig Brann joins forces with tenor saxophone virtuoso Greg Tardy for an electrifying new release on SteepleChase. This album showcases Brann’s signature melodic storytelling and Tardy’s expressive phrasing, creating a dynamic interplay between guitar and saxophone that is both adventurous and deeply rooted in jazz tradition.
“As a guitarist, Brann continually reshapes his sound… When a musician has the capacity to do just about anything, the choices he makes are critical. Here, Brann and his quintet never put a foot wrong." (Mark Corroto – All About Jazz on SCCD 31847 Lineage)
Our Savings, the first LP from Chicago trio ZRL, brings together classical frameworks and sonic explorations, sliding from acoustic ambience to cacophonous clatter to quietly virtuosic displays of musical invention. ZRL recorded the album during a residency at Edgar Miller's Glasner Studio in Chicago. Like Miller, ZRL works without sketches, synthesizing a broad array of creative lineages and approaches. Together, the trio's instruments wash, crash, sprint, glide and divide, darting around and between each other, like they're playing hide-and-seek. Between "Daylight Savings" and "Remarkable Savings," Good moves between soft drones and piercing, frenetic octaval hurdles, recalling ice cream trucks and baseball cards in bicycle spokes. Meanwhile, "Our Savings" conjures Arthur Russell's Tower of Meaning presented by an outer space ensemble; as Packard's electronics collide with his bandmates' chordal drones, Kohl's bowing quickens and disintegrates, like a rocket on reentry." "1. Daylight Savings 2. Remarkable Savings 3. Our Savings 4. Hardly Slept 5. ATM 6. Butterish 7. Recent Ornithology 8. Telling The Difference Between Us
A high-grade transfer to LP for a 2018 album of popular songs in delightful transcriptions by Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), and played by an Italian guitarist who has made a speciality of this repertoire. 'My music is like a garden, and I am the gardener. Listening to my music can be compared to walking through a garden and experiencing the changes in light, pattern, and texture.' Widely considered to be the greatest composer in the classical music tradition in modern Japan, Toru Takemitsu merged Japanese and Western instruments and techniques to create a unique sound world. During the post-war years, in his youth, Takemitsu came into contact with Western music through radio broadcasts the American occupying forces - not only jazz, but especially classical music by Debussy and Schoenberg. 'Every afternoon they broadcast three hours, of beautiful classical music - Bruno Walter, Toscanini, or Paul Whiteman from the Hollywood Bowl. I listened to radio every day. My first teacher was the radio.' Takemitsu found a meeting place between pop and classical music in his scores for almost a hundred Japanese films such as Kurosawa's acclaimed Ran. The guitar also took a starring role in several of in concert works, such as the concerto To the Edge of Dream, and solo pieces such as Towards the Sea. But these transcriptions belong to a lighter genre, and make an affectionate homage to songwriters from George and Ira Gershwin to Lennon and McCartney. Londonderry Air, Over the Rainbow and The Internationale will not be found together on very many song albums, but Takemitsu's taste was as broad as his sensibility was refined. Amours perdues is a classic example of the postwar French chanson, by Joseph Kosma, while What a Friend (we have in Jesus) is a revivalist hymn from 1850s America. Andrea Dieci has recorded Takemitsu's 'own' concert music for the guitar more than once, lending his performance of these transcriptions a particular authority.
This deluxe package includes three LPs, a Blu-ray disc, and a DVD. The audio portion contains the original music composed for the film, which was eventually released as a soundtrack in 1993. It also features The Mathematics of the Altered Destiny, a third, previously unissued LP recorded in the same soundtrack sessions, which is finally being released half a century after it was recorded. This newly discovered LP is heavy on the prose of Sun Ra, as he and June Tyson bestow countless bits of information and inspiration onto the listener. The film soundtrack is an entirely different journey than the 1973 Blue Thumb LP it shares it's title with. We suggest you take both journeys. These recordings were sourced from the Sun Ra tape vault, then were digitally restored to make an album this special sound the best it possibly could. The Blu-ray contains the entire glorious film complete with film artifacts and was sourced from the restoration prepared by Rapid Eye Movies of Germany. The bonus features on the Blu-ray are composed of Ra and Ra-centric material from the Modern Harmonic archives, including video from the Outer Space Visual Communicator footage.
Two worlds, one conversation. On Nuit Parisienne a La Havane, Cuban piano virtuoso Roberto Fonseca and French cellist Vincent Segal capture the magic of a first encounter - no rehearsals, no plan, just pure music. Recorded in Havana over five days, this album is a celebration of spontaneity, friendship, and the art of listening. Here, Paris meets Havana. The warmth of Cuban rhythms embraces the sophistication of French melody; echoes of danzon, chanson, classical and African influences intertwine seamlessly. Every track feels alive: breathing, shimmering, unfolding like a dream that could only happen once. At a time when music is often polished, programed, and overproduced, Fonseca and Segal remind us what happens when you let go of control. This is music that doesn't need to prove anything, it simply is. Deeply human, effortlessly cinematic, Nuit Parisienne a La Havane feels like watching eleven short films through sound: poetic, emotional, and timeless. Whether you're drawn to jazz, world, or classical music (or simply crave something honest and alive), this record will find it's way under your skin. It's an album to return to again and again, always revealing something new.
While attending a show at the Village Vanguard in 2006, it occurred to Christian McBride that he hadn't played there in nearly 9 years, as he'd been touring the world over. In June of 2007, Christian returned to the Village Vanguard with a group consisting of Steve Wilson, Eric Reed, Carl Allen and a young vibraphonist whom he'd recently met, Warren Wolf. Due to prior commitments, Reed could no longer be in the group, but pianist Peter Martin joined the group immediately upon the release of Christian McBride & Inside Straight's first Mack Avenue recording, Kind of Brown, and Peter's been in the piano chair ever since. The Village Vanguard has been McBride and Inside Straight's home for one to two weeks every December. Although many iterations of his groups have played there, Inside Straight was birthed at the Village Vanguard. This particular set was recorded in December of 2014, titled Live at the Village Vanguard.
Recorded live at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, 17-19 and 21 September 2008. Ever since the tenure of it's chief conductor Eduard van Beinum (1945-59), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has cherished one of the greatest Bruckner traditions in the world. During his years at the helm of the Concertgebouw Orchestra (2004-2015) the late Mariss Jansons added a another glorious chapter to the orchestra's impressive performance and recording history of Bruckner's works. In Jansons's view, the refinement of Bruckner's music - however grandiose it may be - will always win out over grandiloquence. He continued the orchestra's performance traditions, focusing particularly on the detail of the sound. Under Jansons's baton, Bruckner had a warm, beating heart: his rhythms were not simply played, they were, above all, experienced, as this this recording of the Fourth Symphony demonstrates. This 2008 audiophile recording is released for the first time on 180 gram vinyl.

Looking back in order to look forward is fundamental to most art forms, maybe none more so than the profound art of jazz. In rare cases, such retrospection can reveal entirely new aspects of the art and its creator, redefining a legacy for a new generation. Such is the case with the genius of Erroll Garner. One of the most popular figures in jazz during his exceptional career, Garner’s legacy is receiving a remarkable reinvigoration through the concerted efforts of Octave Music’s Erroll Garner Project (EGP) and its partnership with Mack Avenue Music Group. Together they are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Garner’s birth with an extraordinary three-tiered release focused on Garner’s output from 1959 to 1975 and featuring a stunning 27-song previously unreleased 1959 concert recorded at Boston’s Symphony Hall.

Limited edition on translucent purple coloured 180-gram audiophile vinyl. As one of the Netherlands' most famous saxophonists and the daughter of Hans Dulfer, Candy needs no introduction. The self-taught musician started playing at age six and made her first recordings already in 1981, at 11 years old. In 1990 she released her hit album Saxuality (selling more than a million copies worldwide) for which she received a Grammy nomination, and followed this record up with Sax-a-Go-Go in 1993. This is the follow-up to Big Girl, and is a continuation of the funk, R&B, and dance path she started following. But make no mistake: Candy's blowing is as fierce, gritty, direct as ever, providing a striking juxtaposition. Like on Big Girl, Dutch vocal mainstays Trijntje Oosterhuis and Berget Lewis are featured again.
