Lindberg: Aura; Marea; Related Rocks / Lintu, Finnish Radio Symphony

Ondine

$18.99 May 07, 2021

Shortlisted for the 2022 Gramophone Awards!

Composer Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) is one of the leading names in today’s contemporary music. This album by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra together with its chief conductor Hannu Lintu includes three works by the composer, including Aura, one of the most prominent monumental orchestral works of our era, together with two other works completed in the 1990s, including Marea and the first recording of Related Rocks. Aura – in memoriam Witold Lutoslawski represents a grand synthesis of Magnus Lindberg’s output in the 1990s. The work was written in 1993–1994 to a commission from Suntory Limited in Japan and was premiered by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under Kazufumi Yamashita at Suntory Hall in Tokyo in June 1994. Clocking in at 40 minutes, Aura is Lindberg’s most extensive orchestral work. Although not a symphony, this 4-movement work is closely linked to the symphonic concept represented by Lutoslawski. The composer heard of Lutoslawski’s death while writing the work and decided to dedicate it to his memory.

REVIEWS:

The Finnish Magnus Lindberg is among the world’s leading composers, and this is a mighty sample of his work. The nearly 40-minute Aura is a four-movement continuous structure of extraordinary power, its rich textural agglomerations as architecturally thwacking as they are minutely detailed.

– Sunday Times (UK)

All the performances on this Ondine CD are magnificent with state-of-the-art sound to match. Thus, if you are in the market for a fine programme of Magnus Lindberg, do not hesitate to add this to your collection.

Von Speyer - St. Francis of Assisi & St. Anthony of Padua, R

Brilliant Classics

$18.99 Apr 30, 2026

Newly recorded at the Basilica in Assisi, the birthplace of the Franciscan order, a comprehensive set of the 'Rhymed Offices' chanted by religious communities to bear witness to the miracles and virtues of St Francis and of St Antony of Padua. During the Middle Ages, the Church established the custom of chanting original poetic texts during the Hours of the Office (in particular, Vespers, Matins and Lauds). Their purpose was to construct a story which linked biblical texts, such as psalms and canticles, to the deeds and virtues of the Saints of the Church. Those Offices dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and to St Antony of Padua are attributed to Brother Julian, a musician-poet monk born in the Rhineland town of Speyer between 1175 and 1180. Most of his life was spent in Paris; he took formal Franciscan orders around 1225, and died in 1250. Saint Francis had died in October 1226. A biography was soon produced, by Tommaso of Celano, and Julian seems to have based his Offices on this text; they were widely sung in monasteries and convents across Europe from 1235 onwards. Meanwhile, the Offices dedicated to St Antony, who died in 1231 and was canonized the following year, seem to be entirely Julian's work, both text and music. Julian writes in flowing Latin iambic pentameter verse, and composes in a style increasingly detached from the formulas of Gregorian chant proper, inflected by the contemporary emergence of polyphony, exemplified by the music of Perotin in works such as Sederunt principes. The musicians and singers of the Nova Schola Gregoriana of Verona have recorded several volumes of Gregorian chant over the course of their 40-year history, while performing at major international festivals in Paris, Avignon and Cremona, and touring Japan and the United States. They also feature on Brilliant Classics albums of organ masses by Fasolo, Frescobaldi and Merulo. Their new account of these meditative Offices is impeccably authentic in style, text and origin.

New Year's Concert 2019 / Thielemann, Vienna Philharmonic

Sony Masterworks

$13.98 Jan 25, 2019

There are few concerts in the world that are awaited with as much excitement as the New Year’s Concert from Vienna. Under the direction of Christian Thielemann, the Vienna Philharmonic ushers in the New Year with a concert in the magnificent Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein.

The concert is relayed to over ninety countries all round the world, reaching an audience of more than fifty million.

The 2019 New Year’s Concert will be conducted for the first time by Christian Thielemann. A native of Berlin, Thielemann has been a regular and welcome guest of the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000, with the result that his first New Year’s Concert may be seen as setting an example and providing an appropriate tribute to his previous work with the orchestra. According to the orchestra’s chairman, Daniel Froschauer, orchestra and musicians trust each other completely: “The profound musical understanding and trust that have existed from the outset and that have always functioned perfectly have subsequently borne remarkable fruit in the symphonic repertory as well.”

Among the works that will be heard at the 2019 New Year’s Concert is the Transactions Waltz by Josef Strauß. Its title could serve as a motto for the 150th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Austria and Japan. Since 1987 the New Year’s Concert has been shown live on Japanese television. Among the works by Johann Strauß that Christian Thielemann is conducting are his Express Polka, his waltz Pictures of the North Sea, excerpts from his only fully-fledged opera, Knight Pázmán, and the overture to The Gypsy Baron. In addition to works by other members of the Strauß family, the concert also features music by Josef Hellmesberger (ii) and Carl Michael Ziehrer.

The tradition of presenting New Year’s Concerts began in 1941. The first concert marking the New Year was given in 1939, albeit on 31 December. The first conductor was Clemens Krauss. Willi Boskovsky took over in 1955 and conducted no fewer than twenty-five New Year’s Concerts between then and 1979. The list of musicians who have conducted New Year’s Concerts reads like a who’s who of leading maestros. The New Year’s Concert was first broadcast live on television in 1959. The Vienna Philharmonic regards this now traditional event as a way of wishing the world a Happy New Year through the medium of music in a spirit of hope, friendship and peace.

Celebrating Francoise Hardy's indelible mark on the history of modern music. • Comprehensive collection of Francois Hardy's English-language studio recordings. Francoise Hardy's Vogue years have left a mark on the history of French and international music. Even today, the 5 years between 1962-67 remain an exceptional moment in her career, the ones when she exploded in the eyes of a generation that was born during or just after the World War II, the generation that would be part of the May 1968 Paris protests. Hardy exploded not only in France alongside her fellow "Yeyes," but also internationally, where she became the symbol of French elegance, talent and charm. The United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain-no one could resist Francoise, who recorded most of her hits in English, Italian, and German. Julian Olevsky, Vol. 6: Handel, Scarlatti Sonatas

Doremi

$60.99 Jun 28, 2019

When Julian Olevksy made his first tour of the Orient in 1959, the Tokyo Shimbun declared him to be "the most exciting violinist to appear in Japan next to Heifetz and Oistrakh." - as his remarkable performances on this release of violin sonatas by G. F. Handel and Domenico Scarlatti so eloquently bear witness. Julian Olevsky was born in Berlin on May 7, 1926. The son of a professional violinist, he began his studies at 7. In 1935, mindful of the growing danger in Germany, the family moved to Buenos Aires. He made his recital debut at 10 and his orchestral debut at 12 in Buenos Aires under the baton of Fritz Busch. In 1947 he immigrated to the United States. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he performed widely, touring and appearing with the finest world orchestras. He recorded extensively for the American label Westminster. Olevsky had a distinguished career as a teacher as well. In 1967 he was appointed Resident Artist and subsequently Professor of Violin at the University of Massachusetts. Olevsky died in Amherst on May 25, 1985. The eminent violin critic Henry Roth, in his survey of the great violinists said of him that he was "a brilliant virtuoso, a fine tonalist with glowing temperament and a tasteful musician and stylist."

Rita Ueda: Someone Out There is Praying for Peace (Let Us No

Stradivarius

$16.99 Jul 04, 2025

The poetic dimension of the three pieces in this album is certainly the listening experience. The two scores that "compose" the music (two because the first and third pieces use the same one) are nothing more than a framework: a very limited number of directions given to the musicians and the conductor, mostly consisting of short melodic or harmonic fragments positioned in boxes (what is called Rahmen-Notation in German) that extend for the entire duration of a section. To bring a piece to life, each performer must perceive what the others are playing, in a relationship of independence-dependence. This is because the composer expressly requests that each musician performs any melodic fragment, whenever they wish, however they wish, and in whatever order they wish, thus in a context of absolute autonomy. At the same time, this fragment is performed alongside other fragments played by other musicians, and it relates to them, creating an interconnectedness among the parts involved. This is most likely the attitude that Rita Ueda invites us to adopt, directing our attention and perception towards it. A choice of sharing also suggested by the meeting of three different musical cultures, represented in these pieces by the solo instruments, each coming from a different musical tradition, alongside the traditional Western orchestra: the Persian tar, the Chinese guzheng, and the Japanese sho.

Dark Magus Anticipates Developments in Jungle, Noise, and Drum 'n' Bass Music: Funky, Ferocious, Free-Form Miles Davis Double Album Is an Exhilarating Jazz-Rock Trip On Domestic Vinyl for the First Time: Mobile Fidelity's Numbered-Edition 180g 33RPM 2LP Set Presents 1974 Performances with Absorbing Detail, Color, and Energy It's safe to assume no one in the audience at Carnegie Hall on March 30, 1974 anticipated what Miles Davis would play at the concert documented on Dark Magus. A rhythmic bonanza rooted in Afro-centrist techniques, avante-garde sensibilities, and exploratory moods, it's songs eschew set arrangements, solos, and, for that matter, melodic devices. Recorded near the tail end of his electric period, the double album remains the darkest, most ferocious statement of Davis' career - a visionary effort that foresaw developments in jungle, noise-rock, funk, and drum 'n' bass. Initially issued in Japan in 1977, Dark Magus waited two decades for U.S. release. Now, more than 50 years after Davis and his ensemble blew minds at the New York venue, it gets it's first-ever domestic issue on vinyl - on a definitive-sounding pressing. Mastered at Mobile Fidelity's private studio, housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, and pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition 180g 33RPM 2LP set of Dark Magus invites you to pull up a seat and wrap your head around an exhilarating performance that simultaneously functions as an audition, experiment, release, and magnificent explosion of jazz-rock fusion. It presents the improvisational magic that unfolded onstage - the skronking tonalities, wah-wah-pedal bluster, acid-washed effects, furious drumming, run-the-voodoo-down grooves, menacing riffs, crashing cymbals - with incredible detail, color, and pace. It also captures the band's unbelievable energy, rendering both instruments and on-the-fly changes with revealing depth, definition, and dynamics. At it's core, this audiophile set takes you deep into the boundless mystery, promise, and uncertainty of Davis and company's efforts like never before. We hope your turntable and speakers are up to the challenge. 1/4' / 15 IPS analog copy to DSD 256 to analog console to lathe Numbered 180g 33RPM Vinyl 2LP NUMBERED SPECIAL EDITION Track List Side A Moja (Part I) Moja (Part II) Side B Wili (Part I) Wili (Part II) Side C Tatu (Part I) Tatu (Part II) Side D Nne (Part I) Nne (Part II)

As a cellist, you inevitably come across Astor Piazzolla's Grand Tango, his only original composition for cello and piano. I was immediately enchanted. Some time later, I travelled to Caracas for concerts with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and met the famous composer Federico Ruiz. He was immediately prepared to arrange Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino" for cello and piano for me. Each subsequent tango drew me deeper and deeper into this cosmos. From this idea of combining South American temperament with European depth and my classical conception of sound, the CD programme Pasión Tango for cello and piano was finally created. The programme was enthusiastically received in live concerts in many countries, from Europe, Japan, and China to North and South America. The next step was a logical continuation: to play tangos with the cello again, but with a classical orchestra instead of the piano, in order to explore the tonal and emotional potential of this repertoire even more deeply - the result is Pasión Tango - el Gran.
