Despite their relatively short career together and an equally limited recording output, The Moonglows were one of the most important and influential doowop vocal groups of the 1950s, their career spanning the years of the rock 'n' roll explosion in pop as well as the time when mainstream pop artists and labels were plundering the R&B charts for potential crossover hit songs. Led by the legendary Harvey Fuqua, who went on to marry Berry Gordy's sister and became a hugely successful writer and producer at Motown, and featuring his long-time colleague Bobby Lester sharing lead vocals, they recorded initially for Alan Freed's Challenge label, before he got them a deal with Chance, and moved to Chess, with whom they scored their biggest success with R&B No. 1 Sincerely, which was covered by The McGuire Sisters to score a pop No. 1. This great-value 56-track 2-CD set comprises the A and B sides of every single they released before they parted company, their music encompassing rocking up-tempo bluesy R&B as well as smooth, immaculate ballads, with beautifully textured harmonies. Perhaps unexpectedly, he is partnered not by an ensemble of period instruments but by a pianist - his long-standing colleague Michal Biel. "On this album we have combined arias and songs that inspire and speak to us, " says Jakub Jozef Orlinski. "I love thinking of albums as pages out of my diary. They are a statement of where I am as an artist." Antje Rux and Lee Santana venture on an unconventional spiritual journey in their latest release. They found inspiration for their song cycle in the poet Angelus Silesius, who made a particularly deeply felt religiosity the basis of his texts. The Breslau court composer Georg Joseph set the 200 poems of his Heiligen Seelenlust to music as early as the 17th century. Lee Santana selected 14 of them and made them the starting point for further arrangements with ritornellos and preludes. Antje Rux explains the unusual principle behind this compilation: 'We have combined the Silesius songbook by Lee with a small, fine selection of Georg Joseph songs, harmonised in terms of content. Since both composers use modal keys, it will sometimes not be immediately recognisable to the listener whether they are musically in the 17th or 21st century.' These interweavings create extraordinary sound effects that make the spirituality tangible.
This highly enjoyable 14 track CD contains the swinging gypsy guitar music of Rodolphe Raffalli, who interprets the compositions of Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday, Charles Trenet, Al Jolson, Charles Aznavour and others. Raffalli includes one original song on the CD and is joined by Christian Escoude, Florin Niculescu, Max Robin, Philippe "Doudou" Cuillerier and Antonio Licusati.
