With "I Put A Spell On You", Nina Simone released one of her most popular albums in 1965, which also contains some of her best-known songs. Her great version of the title track in particular caused a sensation at the time. While Screamin' Jay Hawkins had given the song an ironic touch in the original, Nina transformed it into a rousing love song. Another highlight is the Broadway number "Feeling Good", which Mary J. Blige sampled for her song "About You" in 2006. Nina Simone delighted her then rapidly growing French fan base with interpretations of three well-known chansons: "Tomorrow Is My Turn" ("L'amour c'est comme un jour") and "You've Got To Learn" ("Il faut savoir") by Charles Aznavour as well as "Ne Me Quitte Pas" by Jacques Brel.
Amos Milburn was one of the pioneers of piano-based R&B to emerge from Texas in the post-war years to become one of the artists who helped frame the template for rock 'n' roll, along the way enjoying a run of memorable hits from 1947 through into the mid-'50s.
The Susceptible Now is the new release from drummer and 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winner Tyshawn Sorey that covers a surprising set of some of his favorite music. Featuring his trio of Aaron Diehl on piano and Harish Raghavan on bass, the album follows on the heels of his masterful release Continuing, which was voted #4 release of 2023 by the Francis Davis Poll of over 150 jazz critics, and was hailed by The Guardian as "5-Stars: simmering with reinventions of old magic... One of the year's special sets." The new release continues to expand on Sorey's ongoing partnership with Diehl, now their fourth album together. The trio presents the McCoy Tyner classic "Peresina" from his album Expansions; "A Chair in the Sky" from the Joni Mitchell album Mingus; "Bealtine" from Brad Mehldau; and "Your Good Lies," a contemporary soul song from the group Vividry. Predictably, Sorey completely deconstructs these compositions, extracting and shuffling sections of the original recordings while arranging them into elaborate forms that morph constantly and unpredictably. The program is played without breaks, magnifying it's focused intensity while creating a prodigious sense of scale more akin to a tone poem than a piano trio performance. It's yet another manifestation of Sorey's profound musical wizardry.
On this album the young Italian jazz singer Chiara Pancaldi shows once again talent to sing jazz standards in a flawless and convicing way. Her pure voice was noticed by Kirk Lightsey and Darryl Hall and they formed a pure acoustic trio to record this album. This recording is a true live session, where they all took chances and improvised a lot. Each song, whether it is the famous standard “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” or the obscure Strayhorn tune “Love Came,” has its own atmosphere. Two special guests enrich the session, both in a ballad: Jeremy Pelt, who plays on “What is There to Say,” the track that gives the record its title, and Laurent Maur, who played in “A Timeless Place,” (The Peacocks).

Mills Brothers - The Singles Collection Vol. 2 1947-60 - It's a representative overview of the second era of their career and is a fine showcase for their highly distinctive style of vocal harmonies. - FThe Mills Brothers were a pioneering vocal quartet, who performed in a jazz-flavoured barbershop style and were forerunners of the doowop groups of later years- they broke new ground as the first African-American group to have their own network radio show in the USA. In the course of their long career they made more than 2,000 recordings and had around 60 US chart entries. So prolific were that we have chosen to present their releases on 78s and 45s in two 4-CD sets, of which this is the second (Vol. 1 is ACQCD7185). This 108-track 4-CD collection comprises selected A & B sides from their releases on the Decca and Dot labels from 1947 through to 1960, with just about every release represented by at least one side. It features 27 chart hits, including the No. 1 "Glow Worm", and the Top 10 entries "Across The Alley From The Alamo", "I Love You So Much It Hurts", "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", "Someday (You'll Want Me To Want You)", "Daddy's Little Girl", "Nevertheless" and "Be My Life's Companion". It features recordings with Al Jolson, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee, and with the orchestras of Sy Oliver, Hal McIntyre and Owen Bradley. It's a representative overview of the second era of their career and is a fine showcase for their highly distinctive style of vocal harmonies.

When I reviewed Robert White's Angel collection of Beethoven and Weber folk-song arrangements {The Gallant Troubadour, Fanfare 9:4), I mentioned this RCA collection as another possible source of pleasure to those who enjoyed the Angel set. Here it is on compact disc sounding at least as good as ever with the tenor in his element supported by virtuoso playing (Beethoven's settings were supposed to be playable by amateurs but they'd better be good amateurs). Full texts are provided, but so clear is White's enunciation that you'll have little need for them; one of the songs, “The Soldier,“ is probably better known nowadays as “The Minstrel Boy.“ Unfortunately, RCA could think of nothing appropriate that would serve to fill the CD out, so it contains only 44:25 of music, including pauses between songs, but what's here is certainly choice.

With this recording, GIA hopes to preserve the tried-and-true treasures of the African American religious experience. Favorites like “Guide My Feet,” “How Great Thou Art,” “It Is Well with My Soul,” and “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling” are just a few of the songs at the heart of this recording. These hymns play a deeply formative role in the shared faith and theology of the assembly. It is our hope that 42 Treasured Favorites will inspire, edify, and uplift the lives and souls of every listener.
This new collection of my choral music features recent commissions from choirs near and far. The overall theme of the album is one of hope but also concern for our relationship with living things and the planet we inhabit. Thus, in Earthificat I have based a new secular, environmental text on the words and structure of The Magnificat and in Renew Me In The Sunlight the words ask for strength to move forward in balance with nature. There is a movement, Reverence from my secular mass M=pV, a work about our stewardship of nature and our place within the universe and a setting of some beautiful words by the great 'nature poet' William Wordsworth. Alongside this are Christmas settings and other choral songs. The timbres weave between my more classical 'a cappella and strings' texture, towards a more jazz inflected sound world in tracks such as On This Night and Let All The People Praise You. I have worked many times with the inspirational Newcastle-based choir Voices of Hope who won BBC Choir of The Year in 2016 and who have continued to grow in vocal magic and audience since that time. It's been a joy to work with them and their choir director Mark Edwards alongside my own ensemble and string players from The Alina Orchestra.

Jazz pianist Don Pullen was taken away from us way too soon. He passed at age 53 in 1995. He could play anything from blues to straight ahead to the outer regions of avant garde jazz. This is a re-issue of his 1975 Sackville album originally titled Solo Piano Album. The new title track is a dedication to Muhal Richard Abrams who made his recorded debut on Delmark. "Suite (Sweet) Malcolm (Part 1: Memories and Gunshots)" is for Malcolm X. "Big Alice" is a tour de force embedded with all of Pullen's gospel and soul roots. "Song Played backwards" is a song Pullen decided to play in reverse of the note sequence he had composed! Pullen's music is fierce and joyous and alive, and his presence abides in every note here.
