The late conductor, Kurt Masur, had a long relationship with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, dating back to 1987. This recording, made during his tenure as Principal Conductor (2000-2007), highlights the close relationship between Conductor and Orchestra. This release adds to a growing collection of Shostakovich symphonies on the LPO label. Previous recordings featuring Kurt Masur have been praised for their 'emphatic style' and 'serious class.' The most recent Shostakovich release was described by BBC Music Magazine as "the most stunning Shostakovich disc I have heard this year." The 'Leningrad' Symphony is a true monument to one of the darkest times in recent history. It's famous 'Invasion' theme portrays a brooding sense of unease as an enemy approaches. It was written to bolster the people of the besieged city of Leningrad; it's Leningrad premiere in summer 1942 was broadcast through loudspeakers during the siege as an act of defiance. The London Philharmonic Orchestra gave the UK premiere of this Symphony (it's first performance outside Russia) in June 1942, after the score had been smuggled out of occupied Russia to the West on microfilm.

Recorded live at Boston's magnificent Symphony Hall, CORO brings together on one album the Handel and Haydn Society's recordings of Haydn's early Symphonies Nos. 6, 7 & 8. Known as Le matin, Le midi and Le soir, the three works, written shortly after Haydn joined the court of Prince Paul Anton Esterhazy, are amongst the most striking of the composer's early symphonies. Characterised by unusual virtuoso writing across the orchestral ensemble, all three works feature extensive solo passages for the wind, horn and strings, including rare solo writing for the double bass and bassoon, and demonstrate Haydn's emerging skill as a master of symphonic writing.
Cycles 7-16 is a natural progression from Matt Dunkley's deubt solo album, Six Cycles, released on Village Green in 2016. Like the debut, it was recorded in Berlin with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg. With this album, however, Matt endeavoured to push himself further, to expand his writing horizons. As well as being almost double the length, Cycles 7-16 boasts a broader sonic palette than it's predecessor, such as the full symphony orchestra on 'Cycle 12' and the seven solo pianos used on 'Cycle 14'. On others, Matt returns to his classical roots, using a string chamber orchestra on 'Cycle 11' and 'Cycle 16'. Inspiration came from myriad sources. Touring and travelling over the last two years, influences came from spending time in different cities and places. The wintry, tense 'Cycle 7' was inspired by an early morning in Berlin, while 'Cycle 15' was written whilst on a conducting trip to Norway. Ever since the tenure of it's chief conductor Eduard van Beinum (1945-59), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has cherished one of the greatest Bruckner symphonic traditions in the world. With this release of Bruckner's Sixth and Seventh Symphonies, Mariss Janson's and his Amsterdam-based orchestra add a new chapter to the RCO's impressive performance and recording history of Bruckner's works.
A year and a half after the release of their Latin Grammy-nominated album, Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua, the award-winning Brazilian trailblazer, Ana Frango Eletrico, returns with two new songs: 'A Sua Diversao' and 'Nao Tem Nada Nao'. Both tracks are the result of a remarkable collaboration with legendary Brazilian artist Marcos Valle, creating a dialogue between generations. The 7" single will be released in partnership by the labels RISCO, Mr Bongo and Psychic Hotline. First up, Ana drops the laid-back sultry Brazilian-funk gem 'A Sua Diversao', written alongside Tuca Monteiro and co-produced by Guilherme Lirio. With a breezy '80s tinged feel, the sumptuous bassline, funk strutting guitars and cosmic synths are the perfect match to Ana's instantly recognisable vocal tones. A track with a nostalgic air but a contemporary flair, it includes guest backing vocals by three of Brazil's finest, Dora Morelenbaum, Marcos Valle, and Patricia Alvi. Next, a firm favourite from their live show, Ana reinterprets and re-records a 1973 Marcos Valle classic 'Nao Tem Nada Nao', written collaboratively with Eumir Deodato and Joao Donato. During Ana's tour across 11 countries and over 40 sold-out shows, this cover quickly became a fan favourite. As audiences began tagging Valle in Instagram stories, he showed his support by reposting Ana's performances. This online exchange blossomed into a real-life connection when the two artists met at a benefit concert for Rio Grande do Sul and the idea of a collaboration materialised. Putting their own distinctive spin on the recording, Ana duets with Valle, who features on vocals and Rhodes. As the track progresses it morphs seamlessly into a reimagination of Crystal Water's anthemic 'Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)' from 1991. This inspired yet unlikely combination blends exquisitely and is a perfect distillation of Ana's energetic and absorbing live presence.

From March to May 2015, John Zorn composed 300 new tunes that were eventually collected into a book of music he called The Bagatelles. The tenor saxophonist had already notched several hard bop masterpieces in his Blue Note belt including Soul Station and Workout, but No Room for Squares was an even more ambitious effort that found Mobley elevating his game as a bandleader, improviser, and a composer. The album was drawn from two different sessions each featuring a different quintet line-up. A March 7 date found Mobley with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Philly Joe Jones who deliver thrilling performances of the Mobley originals "Up a Step" and "Old World, New Imports." Mobley returned to Van Gelder Studio on October 2 with Jones once again on drums plus trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Andrew Hill, and bassist John Ore to lay down takes of Mobley's skittering tunes "Three Way Split" and "No Room for Squares" in addition to two remarkable Morgan tunes: the gorgeous ballad "Carolyn" and the grooving "Me 'N You." This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.
