Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, the legendary duo from Bahia whose music has embodied the soul of Brasil for over five decades, return with a bold new collaboration: Jazz Is Dead 026. Introduced to Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad by Beto Barreto of Baiana System, the meeting was instant magic. "The first time we met, it was like family," they recall. That kinship led Younge and Muhammad to invite the duo to Los Angeles, where they carried a handful of ideas and created new songs on the spot-an intuitive, improvisatory process that defines the Jazz Is Dead ethos. The story of Antonio Carlos & Jocafi begins in Salvador at the close of the 1960s, when the pair first joined forces as composers and performers. In 1971, their debut album Muita Zorra! Introduced Brasil to a sound that was both rooted in Bahia's folk traditions and attuned to the modern pulse of samba, funk, and MPB. From that record came Voce Abusou, an anthem that became one of the most recorded songs in the history of Brasilian popular music. The duo quickly distinguished themselves through their ability to channel the everyday life, humor, and struggles of Bahia into universal songs that resonated across the country and beyond. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi wrote and recorded music that blended the sacred and the profane, Afro-Brasilian traditions and urban funk, biting satire and joyous celebration. Their compositions were picked up by some of the greatest voices of their generation: Clara Nunes, Gal Costa, Maria Creuza, and Sergio Mendes among them. They also contributed to television and cinema, writing theme songs that became part of Brasil's cultural fabric. Despite their success, they remained deeply tied to Bahia, drawing constant inspiration from Salvador's streets, the Mercado Modelo, the rhythms of candomble, and the irreverent humor of the people. Now, with Jazz Is Dead 026, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi reaffirm their creative vitality while introducing their timeless Bahian spirit to a new generation. "Adrian's love for Brasil is greater than that of many Brasilians," they say, noting how deeply he listens, studies, and channels the rhythms, stories, and feelings of their culture. In early summer 1929, after returning home from Germany, the Austrian Composer Ernst Krenek embarked on a twenty-day journey through the Austrian Alps, accompanied by his parents and his second wife, Berta. They covered the longer distances between the 14 stops by bus and train, from which they undertook their hikes and excursions. Their route took them from Vienna to Upper Styria, the Salzkammergut region, Carinthia, and East Tyrol, then back to Vienna via Lower Austria. On this journey, Krenek is not just a composer traveling, but rather a poet, stage designer, and philosopher tracing the spirit of the times in his homeland. Just a few days after returning to Vienna, he set to work and, while the impressions of the trip were still fresh, created the music and text for the song cycle almost simultaneously. The Austrian tenor Alexander Kaimbacher and Anna Sushon on piano present the resulting entertaining, often humorous "Reisebuch aus den osterreichischen Alpen" (Travel Book from the Austrian Alps).

This program completes the Comédie et Tragédie project with Tempesta di Mare, and consists of suites made up of orchestral excerpts from three dramatic works of the French stage, spanning seventy-three years, all highlighting the importance of dance as a part of drama.
The comédie-ballet was the brainchild of the French comedic actor, singer, dancer, and playwright Molière. After ten years of collaborating with Lully, a Suite from whose Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme features in Volume 1, he turned to Charpentier. The outcome was Le Malade imaginaire whose fourth performance would prove Molière’s last, as he died on stage.
Scylla et Glaucus is the only stage work by Jean-Marie Leclair, the foremost violinist of his generation and a composer whose late opera shows the clarity of his orchestration and places its focal point on the strings, as one would expect.
Les Fêtes de Polymnie is contemporary with Leclair’s opera but more forward looking in its approach, and famous for the ingenuity of Rameau’s colorful orchestration, particularly obvious in the overture.- Chandos

I particularly liked Tempesta di Mare's vigorous, spiky strings in Leclair's 'Air des silvains' and the 'Premier air de demons'…delightful music, delightfully played.
Charade [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] by Henry Mancini - Reflecting the European setting of Stanley Donen's 1963 comedy thriller Charade, Henry Mancini's soundtrack provides an easy listening tour of continental musical history: Parisian cafe songs on "Bistro," Eastern European gypsy music on "Bateau Mouche," Schubert quartets on "Bye Charlie," and some beer barrel polka on "Punch and Judy." Thrown in for variety's sake are dashes of Bond soundtracks, Cossack songs, and Strauss waltzes. A great Mancini recording made during the same fruitful, early-'60s period that produced two other fine soundtracks of his, Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Pink Panther.

An homage to Erik Satie and Robert Desnos - A sensuous sound journey by the Ensemble European Music Project "Inside the Dream" evolved out of a live multimedia performance with a multichannel sound installation, voice, and an ensemble augmented by modern "club electronics." This CD presents the musical part of the performance. At it's center are several early songs by Erik Satie, along with his famous "Gnossiennes". Satie's compositions are flanked by Jürgen Grözinger's pieces, consciously written with a similar gesture, making the CD something of an homage to Satie, who was both a forefather of modern music and a close friend of the surrealists. Jürgen Görzinger is fascinated by the French surrealists and especially by Robert Desnos. "Inside the Dream" is an associative approach to and transformation of the atmosphere of longing, eroticism, passion, adventure, and melancholy which are presented in Desnos's poetry - all mixed with a touch of humor. The liner notes in German, English and French are illustrated with photographs by P.J. Boman from his book "Muse: Desire and Severance".
Wayne Krantz uncharacteristically digs deep into the archive to release what was to be his first record, 1985's "Music Room." The 28-minute, 6-song CD testifies to the fact that even 35 years ago, before getting any professional experience as a sideman or leader, Krantz was already running with a distinct stylistic take on the art of the groove, on the synthesis of pop and jazz, on the song-over-solo sensibility that has driven many of his subsequent 11 official releases. "Music Room 1985" is a heretofore unknown blast from the past, resplendent with accounts of the present and rumors of the future. It's a time capsule filled with vitality, humor, romantic notions and - dare I say it - hope.
Today Street Scene is Kurt Weill's most frequently revived American stage work. A polystylistic blending of operatic arias and ensembles, musical comedy songs and dances, dramatic dialogue both unaccompanied and underscored, and extraordinary emotional drama, Street Scene is arguably Weill's breakthrough. Though Elmer Rice's play was set in the 1920s, the popular music references are pure 1940s style (Glenn Miller, Rodgers and Hammerstein). After the successful release of "Love Life" (Capriccio C5550) this recording fills up the meanwhile large Kurt-Weill-Catalogue of Capriccio, again with a powerful cast from Opera North.

This is Volume 1 of Tempesta di Mare’s two-disc project of late seventeenth century French instrumental music. Suites of music were often compiled from stage works that were performed at the time and presented in the form of instrumental excerpts and dances. These suites contain some of the most tuneful, appealing and striking music of the period with works by Lully, Marais and Rebel.

The group seem genuinely at home in the 18-th century music ... The tempos are well chosen – dignified in the overtures and marches, lilting and swaggering in the airs and dances – and command of dynamics and ornamentation are superb throughout.
Executive producer: Jim Mulally. When you hear this trio play Sibelius, you'll understand why the Sibelius family granted Petteri, Juho and Samuli use of the composer's name. Jean Sibelius' piano trios were important to him personally. He wrote them in his youth, during the summers he vacationed with his brother Christian and sister Linda on various islands in Houtskar, the Finnish archipelago off the southwest coast of Finland. Sibelius wrote Korppoo Trio on Korrpoo Island where the composer (violin), Linda (piano) and Christian (cello) played it on 'rainy days' at the family's summer house. - Bob Attiyeh, producer 'Sibelius gave us his monumental Korppoo Trio in D Major (JS 209) in 1887. We can hear the magnificent mature Sibelius peeking out through this work. Sibelius wrote Korppoo Trio in three sophisticated and dramatic movements... Korppoo opens with a good-humored celebration of the Beauty of Nature and includes a thoughtful Fugue in the development section which demonstrates his growing power as a composer. Next comes a Fantasia, improvisational and painterly in nature, with frequent tempo changes and mood swings, ending with passages of natural serenity that remind me of bird song. Sibelius reveals his fun sense of humor in the final Rondo, which he writes without allowing himself to be inhibited by traditions of the 'approved' classical tradition.' - Juho Pohjonen
This CD consists of two Hoagy Carmichael albums from the late 1950s making their CD debut, 'Hoagy Carmichael's Havin' a Party' and 'Ole Buttermilk Sky'. While composer Hoagy Carmichael holds the record for the most recorded love song of all time, "Stardust", he also made numerous recordings himself of which some achieved hit status. The two albums featured on this CD were recorded in the late 1950s and were some of the last commercial recordings he made. The first album, "Havin' a Party" is aimed at the children's market where he sings some of his best old and new songs for the young and old. The collection on the second album, "Ole Buttermilk Sky" shines with several never-before-recorded originals combined with some of his earlier hits that Carmichael revisits with a more up-to-date arrangement and backing. The CD ends with two very unusual gems previously only to be found on a 45 single release, including the Johnny Cash classic, "I Walk the Line".
