In February of 1976 two of the bass playing giants: Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (1946 – 2005) and Sam Jones (1924 – 1981) went into a studio in Holland to record an album as co-leaders not to make an experimental project or a “battle” session but to produce “a unqualified success on all levels – musicianship, recording, feeling, integrity and compatibility,” to quate Mike Hennessy of Jazz Journal International.

Soloist and leader of the Camerata Bern, Antje Weithaas - "For any violinist, the Brahms Concerto is a special challenge and a precious gem, a piece one works on for decades. I studied it more intensely for the first time when I was 18-19; now I'm astounded to note how one's perception of such a work can change so radically. Amongst all violin concertos, Brahms, Beethoven and Mendelssohn play an essential role, and I would add Britten and Shostakovich. The Brahms Violin Concerto is part of our essential repertoire, and was composed at a time when the "customary" violin concerto no longer had any significance as virtuoso display for a soloist (incidentally, that's my own credo as a performer). This is a symphonic work, an aspect that relates it to the recording of Berg and Beethoven I made with Stavanger Symphony Orchestra a couple of years ago. Those two pieces from different stylistic periods are actually works for orchestra with obligato solo violin - and the same applies to the Brahms Concerto. The violin often plays passagework around the orchestra melody, as in the Beethoven Concerto, which is why I find the symphonic approach so important here as well...We tackled the challenge of performing and recording without a conductor. Of course, when I otherwise perform this concerto with a conductor, I intensely learn and think through the orchestra part in my head. It is a challenge I am aware of, and I thus probably would never have had dared to perform this concerto without a conductor. But since I've often performed the Beethoven Concerto with the Camerata Bern without a conductor, I started thinking that the Brahms Concerto just might work as well. Over teh past 7-9 years we have become so well-acquainted with one another on a musical and personal level that by now we manage to communicate with blindfolds on. I probably would not have dared to embark on this adventure with any other ensemble. The most important thing is that each musician should remain in a "chamber music" attitude while providing the necessary symphonic energy and assuming his/her share of responsibility.

Recorded in May 1963, Silver's Serenade was the last in a fantastic run of albums that pianist Horace Silver would make with the most celebrated line-up of his Quintet featuring Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums. The core of the band had been together since 1959 and recorded hard bop classics like Finger Poppin' and Blowin' the Blues Away, with Brooks joining in 1960 on Horace-Scope. The program on Silver's Serenade consists of five Silver tunes that epitomize his exceptional compositional style: captivating melodies, sophisticated harmonies, and intricate rhythmic inventions with a soulful and unerring sense of swing at the core. From the relaxed groove of the opening title track to the hard-charging finale "Nineteen Bars" the Quintet delivers their swan song with style.
Erik Satie and John Cage are UFOs in the world of music, because they envisioned music through a completely different prism," says pianist Bertrand Chamayou. "They are pioneers in the sense that, for many people, they changed the very idea of what music must be." With his album Letter(s) to Erik Satie Chamayou pays tribute to two idiosyncratic, innovative and influential composers, one born in Normandy in 1866, the other in Los Angeles in 1912. There is a strong connection between them: Cage considered Satie a source of inspiration. Satie takes pride of place on the album with such pieces as the three Gymnopedies and the seven Gnossiennes, while Cage is represented by five pieces and a work attributed to him following it's rediscovery amongst the papers of his disciple James Tenney - whose musical homage to Satie also features in the programme. Chamayou recorded the album at the state-of-the-art Miraval Studios in Provence, which inspired him to take an experimental approach: "I thought we should do something a little different - and I thought of Erik Satie. This was an opportunity to get really intimate with the piano... Satie is really a special case, a strange musician unlike anyone else.
Lightnin' Hopkins (1912-1982) was a country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. One of the most influential blues guitarists to come out of the state of Texas, Hopkins' unique fingerpicking guitar style would alternate single-note leads with rhythm and bass guitar, adding percussive elements by slapping or tapping the body of his guitar. The Rooster Crowed in England was recorded in 1959, a few years before Hopkins' first trip across the Atlantic. Rope unfolds slowly, evolving from the threshold of the perceptible towards denser, more ballasted electronic textures, but always on the brink of an upheaval to come. Then a melodic motif appears, seeming to carry within it an impossible consolation. In this respect, Rope balances strikingly between formal elegance, sonic gravity and an emotional charge that is almost uncontainable.

Zarathustra Music is proud to present the world premiere recording of Elliot Goldenthal's 'Symphony in G# Minor' performed by Pacific Symphony under conductor Carl St. Clair. Composer, conductor, and orchestra previously collaborated 20 years before when Pacific Symphony commissioned and recorded Goldenthal's highly acclaimed 'Fire, Water, Paper - A Vietnam Oratorio. ' For the occasion of the orchestra's American Composers Festival 2014, Goldenthal composed his 25 minute symphony, in the obscure yet autobiographical key of G# Minor, especially for the occasion. The work premiered immediately after the composer's 60th birthday in May 2014 and represents Goldenthal's first large-scale concert work since Fire, Water, Paper. In the past 20 years, Goldenthal has garnered three Academy Award nominations (Interview with a Vampire, Michael Collins) and won and Oscar and Golden Globe for his score to Frida. In 2007, Goldenthal was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera Grendel which premiered at Los Angeles Opera and Lincoln Center Festival. In 2013 composed his String Quartet No. 1 'The Stone Cutters' as well as music for Julie Taymor's stage production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' that opened a new theater in Goldenthal's hometown of Brooklyn, NY. In 2013 the Joffrey ballet produced his large-scale three-act ballet Othello at the 4, 000 seat Auditorium Theater in Chicago, and in 2015 the American Ballet Theater revives Othello for it's fourth time at the Metropolitan Opera House. Meanwhile, downtown the composer is providing 'Music & Soundscapes' for the new one-woman show Grounded starring Anne Hathaway at the Public Theater. Goldenthal remains one of the most highly acclaimed and dynamic composers working today.
Back in April 2014 at Carnegie's Zankel Hall, Augustin Hadelich's performance of David Lang's 'mystery sonatas' was praised by the New York Times as a riveting display of “magisterial poise and serene control.” That same magic penetrates this starkly beautiful recording of the work, played by Hadelich on the exquisite 1723 “ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari, on loan to him by its current owners since 2011. Lang based his 'mystery sonatas' on the famous pieces by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, but with a modern twist. “I decided to make my own virtuosic pieces about my most intimate, most spiritual thoughts,” he explains, “[but] mine are not about Jesus, and the violin is not retuned between movements. I did keep one of Biber's distinctions. He divides Jesus's life into three phases—the joyous, the sorrowful, and the glorious. The central pieces of my mystery sonatas are called 'joy,' 'sorrow,' and 'glory,' but these are all quiet, internal, reflective states of being.”
Despite various reissue formats over several decades, the seven original LPs contained in Thelonious Monk - The Riverside Tenor Sessions stood perfectly well on their own at the time of initial release and remain among the highest achievements of a truly golden age. Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. For Misterio, Monk recorded live at the Five Spot Cafe in the Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan on August 7, 1958, at the same sessions that produced Thelonious in Action. One of New York's most celebrated jazz rooms, the Five Spot is where Monk first emerged into the spotlight. With him on this date was tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik. They created two highly memorable in-performance albums (of which this is the second) of classic Monk repertoire. This recording showcases Monk's distinctive blend of angular melodies, dissonant harmonies, and rhythmic complexity, all delivered with his trademark sense of style and flair. From the hypnotic groove of the title track, 'Misterioso, ' to Monk's passion for inside-out melody lines on 'Let's Cool One, ' each composition on this album is a testament to Monk's unparalleled musical vision. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - "First Flight To Tokyo: The Lost 1961 Recordings" - A previously unreleased live recording of drum legend Art Blakey with a classic line-up of the Jazz Messengers, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. It was captured on January 14, 1961, at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo during the band's first-ever tour of Japan. Sergiu Celibidache was without question one of the most important and original conductors in recent memory. He was a perfectionist who disliked what he perceived to be the synthetic sounds created in the modern recording studio, preferring the immediacy of the concert platform and the interaction with a live audience. This Bruckner recording celebrates the extraordinary legacy of his collaboration with the Munchner Philharmoniker, from which he was Musical Director between 1979 and his death in 1996. Shamballa is the 1993 collaboration from jazz drummer William Hooker, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and composer Elliott Sharp. The release features Hooker performing duets with each musician. Hooker and Moore's performance is littered with bursts of feedback and distortion, while the collaboration with Sharp is characterized by a more electronic sound, building a sense of technology.
Michel Petrucciani's 2nd Blue Note release, Power of Three, featured the miraculous French pianist in a duo with guitarist Jim Hall and a trio that added saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Recorded live at the 1986 Montreux Jazz Festival, the album captured a magical night of music-making by three virtuosos. This stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket.
