This autumn, Erased Tapes are set to release 'Give It to the Sky: Arthur Russell's Tower of Meaning Expanded' by composer and producer Peter Broderick and French 12-piece group Ensemble 0; a complete re-recording of Russell's epic minimalist orchestral composition originally released in 1983. Released 6th October, 'Give It to the Sky' also includes unreleased tracks by Russell which have been restored and re-recorded, resulting in an 80-minute reanimation that threads several lost songs into a meticulous and gorgeous rendering. Ensemble 0 weave in and out of Broderick's additions. 'Corky', a poignant cowboy ballad that Russell never finished, appears, disappears, and reappears three times, the droning exhalations of 'Tower of Meaning' making it feel sweeter and sadder. Arriving just after the triumphant halfway mark, the title track is a sublime meditation on mere existence, about staring at some simple rural scene and marcelling at the miracle of being anywhere at all. It is an apt encapsulation of how this entire project feels - a glorious way to hear something that might have seemed familiar as if for the very first time. Russell was never much for definitive versions, of course. He was constantly rethinking the possibilities of a piece, of wondering what else it could do. 'Give it to the Sky' is a powerful affirmation of those principles, using Tower of Meaning's framework to build outward and upward, to shape something that functions within Russell's wondrous, paradoxical world. And 'Give it to the Sky' is also not intended to be some definitive last word. Broderick and Ensemble 0 speak already of the ways it may shift on stage, of where else it might lead. 1. Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich continue their recording of Mahler's complete symphonies with the Seventh, considered one of his most complex and challenging symphonies: "The Mahler we encounter in Symphony No. 7 is more complex, darker, and more philosophical than the Mahler we know from his earlier works," says Paavo Järvi. Mahler, who was extremely busy in his role as director of the Vienna Opera, composed this symphony on the shores of Lake Wörthersee in Austria during the summers of 1904 and 1905. Also known as Song of the Night, this symphony is characterized by rich instrumentation (including a guitar and mandolin in the fourth movement) and spectacular orchestral effects: "Here, nature roars," Mahler said of the tenor horn solo at the beginning of the work.

Dedicated to his first piano teacher Irena Orlov, River Without Banks is a mesmerizing, emotional collection of pieces that are simultaneously complex and fluid. The title River Without Banks comes from a chapter of musicologist Genrikh "Henry" Orlov's profound work Tree of Music. In said chapter, Orlov traces the history of sacred music from the Western and Eastern tradition and how the forms (of the chant, raga etc.) sought to eliminate the division between the physical and the spiritual-the bank and the river. Arranged for two pianos with accompaniment from strings, trumpet, and electronics, this is Svirsky's first piece to approach the history of the piano and the possibilities of the recording studio, and his deepest dive yet into exploring the instability of listening and it's transformation of musical semantics and affect. Like Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, Svirsky overlays romantic musical gestures to create a lush unfamiliarity. No sooner than each track begins the next moment unfurls beneath it, cascading time and blurring perception of past and present. Akin to a multidimensional Rzewski thematic interpretation, Svirsky's music defies genre-classification or classical ideology while it's virtuosity clearly stems from somewhere from within disciplined traditions. Continuously revisiting, revising, and renewing it's emotional core, River Without Banks is less an album of songs than songs of a singular, unlocatable album. On 22 November 1963 at Idil Biret's US debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf she played Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto. The concert was scheduled for 2.00pm. The tragic death of President Kennedy was announced during the concert. Despite the electrified atmosphere which can be sensed in the recording, the audience, many in tears, then heard a stunning performance of the concerto which was broadcast live to the nation from Boston and rebroadcast the next day from New York - "There was a buoyant quality to Idil Biret's playing, a great warmth of tone was in no way dispelled by her technical skill... she gave us power without a bang, emotion without a sentimental tear. There is no question that Miss Biret is one of the most extraordinary musicians and many of her listeners testified to her artistry by giving her a standing ovation."

With "I Put A Spell On You", Nina Simone released one of her most popular albums in 1965, which also contains some of her best-known songs. Her great version of the title track in particular caused a sensation at the time. While Screamin' Jay Hawkins had given the song an ironic touch in the original, Nina transformed it into a rousing love song. Another highlight is the Broadway number "Feeling Good", which Mary J. Blige sampled for her song "About You" in 2006. Harpists Eva Tebbe and Ekaterina Levental remark that Debussy makes the invisible visible and turns the unspeakable into a musical world full of mysticism, layers of ambiguity and evocative meanings. A century after his death, he is being celebrated across the world in 2018, and this album promises to make a special contribution on record with arrangements of works, most of them relatively unfamiliar, which particularly lend themselves to the ethereal and exquisite combination of voice and harps. Much of the music here was written while Debussy was composing his only opera Pelléas et Mélisande, a Symbolist drama based on the play by Maurice Maeterlinck, who recognized that in many ways Debussy had not only set his play to music but even outstripped and further enriched his original. There is the early and peaceful Ballade from 1890, then the Proses lyriques from 1892-3 and the seductive Trois Chansons de Bilitis (1897), from which this musical partnership takes its name. Bilitis is the fictional poet of Classical antiquity invented by Pierre Louÿs, writing in an erotic, symbolist vein after the fashion of Sappho: and when in 1900 Debussy came to use the texts of Louÿs again for the Musique de Scène pour les chansons de Bilitis, the music accompanied a tableau vivant in pre-Raphaelite style of winsome and scantily clothed young women. The recital is completed by the Danse sacrée et danse profane – originally composed for harp and orchestra in 1904, here with the orchestral parts arranged for a second harp – and the six Epigraphes Antiques from 1914, which return to the musical material of the Bilitis works but in the composer’s more allusive late style which would lead to his final masterpiece written for Serge Diaghilev, Jeux.
Recorded at San Francisco's Columbia Studios and released in 1972, trumpeter Luis Gasca's album, For Those Who Chant, enlisted a "who's who" of the city's A-tier musical community from that period. The cast is plentiful, featuring Carlos Santana and a pre-Journey Neal Schon on guitar, a rhythm section of Lenny White on drums, Stanley Clarke on bass (who were about to jump into a new band called Return to Forever), and the indomitable Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, to name a few. The set is full of chemistry and outstanding musicianship throughout. The Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.
Apart from Idil Biret's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf on 22 November 1963, another memorable performance of the 3rd Concerto was at the Istanbul Festival in July 1983 with the Leningrad Orchestra conducted by Alexander Dimitreev. After her performance the orchestra's conductor Alexander Dimitriev visited Idil Biret at her home and said the following: "We were quite intrigued when we learnt that you wanted to perform Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with our orchestra as women rarely play this work. I now want to thank you for your wonderful performance yesterday. There is no woman today in the Soviet Union who can play this work the masterly way you did. The number of men who can do so are limited in number to the fingers of hand."

Mathieu David Gagnon resumes his voyage into environment and emotion with Volume II, drawing inspiration from the rivers and rugged wilderness of the composer's native Quebec.
