Takemitsu: Quatrain; A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden Avantgarde Series Limited Edition / Boston Symphony Orchestra/Seiji Ozawa - Toru Takemitsu's Quatrain (1975) and A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden (1977) exemplify his synthesis of Western avant-garde techniques and Japanese aesthetics. In Quatrain, scored for clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and orchestra, Takemitsu evokes the Japanese concept of ma (the space between things) through fluid shifts of timbre and atmosphere. He likened the work to an emaki, a picture scroll unfolding scene by scene, where each musical idea is independent yet interwoven. Both pieces merge modernist innovation with deeply rooted Japanese sensibility. By embracing his cultural heritage within the structures of Western art music, Takemitsu reshaped the avant-garde, bridging modernism and postmodernism, and offering works that still sound strikingly fresh and timeless today. Cecile McLorin Salvant's First Orchestral Album, 'With Every Breath I Take'-Featuring Metropole Orkest Conducted by Jules Buckley. Cecile McLorin Salvant's With Every Breath I Take is due June 2026, on Nonesuch Records. The album, Salvant's first with orchestra, features The Netherlands' Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley. Salvant and the ensemble perform timeless songs newly arranged by composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue. The album's title track, written by Cy Coleman and David Zippel, is available today along with a lyric video, which may be seen here. Salvant tours internationally throughout the summer and fall.

Few orchestral pieces demand precision engineering as much as Richard Strauss's 'An Alpine Symphony.' The Decca recording by Sir Georg Solti and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was made in 1979, one of the last Decca analog productions before the switch to digital. Solti knew Strauss personally and studied the composer's own recording before taping this uniquely authentic performance in Munich. Recorded by Decca at the Herkulessaal, Munich, in September 1979, the original 1/4-inch, two-track stereo tapes have been mastered by Rainer Maillard and cut by Sidney C. Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios. Pressed on 180g vinyl in gatefold jacket. Decca Pure Analogue Series is limited and numbered.

Stephen Hough's four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos have long been viewed as reference recordings of this iconic repertoire, the standard by which others must be judged. Bolstered by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton, Hough made a conscious return to the fast and lean performance tradition of the composer himself, avoiding the sentimental 'Hollywood' approach that had become so prevalent, for this triumphantly successful, awards-lavished Rachmaninov cycle. Recorded in 1961, Dexter Gordon's second Blue Note album, Dexter Calling, solidified the tenor saxophonist's career rebirth with a joyous return to form. Dexter holds forth at the helm of a quartet with Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones moving nimbly from hard-charging swing to stunning balladry. This stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

In 1958, guitarist Kenny Burrell assembled an impressive lineup with Louis Smith, Junior Cook, Tina Brooks, Duke Jordan, Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey to record Blue Lights, a high-quality blowing session of blues, ballads and standards that produced two stellar volumes. The cover features an illustration by soon-to-be famed artist Andy Warhol. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is mono, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Lee Morgan's magnum opus", The Sidewinder", recorded in 1963 and released in 1964", was both a comeback and a coronation. The prodigious trumpeter had debuted on Blue Note in 1956 at the age of 18", but personal problems in the early-60s forced him off the scene temporarily. His rebound recording turned out to be The Sidewinder", an assured and energetic set of 5 indelible Morgan originals featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson", pianist Barry Harris", bassist Bob Cranshaw", and drummer Billy Higgins. The album became his biggest commercial success fueled by the irrepressible title track. Blue Note Essential Series is mastered from hi-resolution digital masters on 140g vinyl.

In Pas(s)ing was Mick Goodrick's recording debut as leader, after some years with Gary Burton and before that, a spell with Woody Herman. Never very tigerish about self-promotion, Goodrick has spent most of his life teaching in Boston. Jazz Times has called him "perhaps the most influential mentor in the history of jazz guitar." This 1978 production emphasizes what a creative player he is in his own right, inspired by the great team of players assembled for the session. The playful album title alludes to ECM's first office address, which was, yes, in Pasing. An ECM Luminessence Series release.
