In February 2018 artist Marsha Hammel invited me to bring my trio to a special event at The Gallery at Flatrock (NC) in which she would paint a portrait of the trio while we performed. Marsha also offered the use of the painting for an album cover. BLAKEY,ART & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS MOANIN (BLUE NOTE ESSENTIALS SERIES) More than any other album in the canon of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, 1958's Moanin' was the perfect crystallization of the band's bluesy, soulful sound, and it still stands today as perhaps the most quintessential hard bop recording of all time. Originally self-titled, the album was later renamed Moanin' due to the popularity of Timmons' unforgettable opening track. Featuring the great drummer with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt, the album also introduced several indelible Golson compositions that would become standards of the jazz songbook including, "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March." Song for My Father captured the transition of his quintet with two tracks taken from an October 1963 session with Blue Mitchell", Junior Cook", Gene Taylor", and Roy Brooks. A year later Silver entered Van Gelder Studio again with a new band featuring Carmell Jones", Joe Henderson", Teddy Smith", and Roger Humphries for a session that yielded four more cuts including what would become his signature tune", "Song for My Father"," a dedication to his father that was inspired by both his Cape Verdean heritage and the music Silver had heard on a recent trip to Brazil. What happens when the illustrious brass sections of the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic come together? The answer: The Philharmonic Brass. Making it's debut in Vienna's Musikverein in April 2023 the group will come together for recording, tours and education work. Comprising some of the best-known faces in the brass world from Berlin, Vienna and their friends, the group includes Sarah Willis, horn, Matthias Hofs, trumpet, or Paul Halwax, tuba. In February 2025, a new chapter began with the release of their first album on Supreme Classics: Italiana! Conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti includes virtuoso arrangements of some of the best-known music including Verdi's Sinfonia di Nabucco, Rossini: Guillaume Tell - Overture and many more. We can now look forward to the ensemble's very first vinyl release and this exceptional album in an audiophile pressing by the renowned record manufacturer Pallas.
Apart from Idil Biret's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf on 22 November 1963, another memorable performance of the 3rd Concerto was at the Istanbul Festival in July 1983 with the Leningrad Orchestra conducted by Alexander Dimitreev. After her performance the orchestra's conductor Alexander Dimitriev visited Idil Biret at her home and said the following: "We were quite intrigued when we learnt that you wanted to perform Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with our orchestra as women rarely play this work. I now want to thank you for your wonderful performance yesterday. There is no woman today in the Soviet Union who can play this work the masterly way you did. The number of men who can do so are limited in number to the fingers of hand."
