The album was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, Rolling Stone Brasil ranked it number 58 in "The 100 greatest Brazilian music records".

Although he engaged in a wide variety of jazz idioms, the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, were his primary focus and inspiration. In April 1954, he formed The Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Sextet and recorded several albums in rapid succession for Fantasy Records.
