Coronation - Music for Royal Occasions / Christophers, The Sixteen
Coronation – Music for Royal Occasions spans 500 years of royal music – for celebration, for prayer and for commemoration – varying in scale from private devotion to full state coronation. The collection, featuring Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, Purcell, Tippett and Britten, looks forward to the coronation of Charles III, and back to the ancient rituals of royal ceremonial. It also presents a new work, commissioned by the Genesis Foundation, from celebrated composer Cecilia McDowall commemorating the life of Queen Elizabeth II and celebrating her remarkable reign. Of course no such collection would be complete without examples from the four anthems Handel wrote for the coronation of George II at Westminster Abbey in 1727, of which Zadok the Priest has been performed at the coronation of every British monarch since. Much has changed since their first performance almost 300 years ago. Yet their dramatic impact and grandeur, underlined by mighty choral acclamations and regal trumpets and drums, remains supremely fit for the coronation of a new king.

Handel: Coronation Anthems / Niquet, Le concert spirituel
‘Well, what a surprise – a divine surprise! I have delighted in immersing myself in the world of Handel for more than forty years now. But I must admit that I experienced yet another lesson in strength and joy when I toured and recorded the Dettingen Te Deum and the Coronation Anthems’, says Hervé Niquet. As a lover of large orchestral formations, he has assembled a number of instrumentalists and singers close to the (gigantic) forces used at the premiere, with a large band of oboes, bassoons and trumpets, and assigned the solo arias to the entire ‘chapel’. Niquet speaks of ‘the glittering power of this ceremonial music concocted by a Handel conscious of placing the best of his genius at the service of the crown and of history’, and he in turn invests all his enthusiasm and expressiveness in these works combining ‘grace and strength’. Fans of Champions League football will recognize in "Zadok the Priest" the theme of that competition’s anthem!
REVIEW:
Niquet’s fluid lines heighten the drama by drawing out crucial words in long, upswelling crescendos, punctuated at climaxes by pungent brass and woodwinds. His performers apply dynamics with authority and precision, fashioning an intricate fabric.

Handel: Freedom - Oratorio Arias / Verhaar, Fentross, La Sfera Armoniosa
Freedom is a dominant theme in the English oratorios of Georg Friedrich Handel. These grand works are mostly based on biblical stories that deal with resistance, suppression, captivity and, finally, freedom. Debut album by young countertenor Oscar Verhaar. Oscar selected eight arias drawn from Haendel's English oratorios. Diversified moods and atmospheres and the support of La Sfera Armoniosa baroque orchestra make this disc a constant pleasure to listen to.

The Ghost in the Machine: Music from Mechanical Instruments / Baines, Amyas
This recording is the culmination of 10 years of research by Dr. Emily Baines, and it brings to dazzling life the fascinating and effervescent performance style found in eighteenth-century mechanical musical instruments. It contains never before heard transcriptions of music found in eighteenth-century barrel organs and musical clocks, set for the live performers of Amyas ensemble and a number of other collaborators.
Dr. Baines is a recorder player, lecturer, and musical director working throughout Europe, also specialising in a wide variety of historical woodwinds. She she wrote her doctoral thesis on the role of mechanical musical instruments as sources for 18th-century performance practice. Baines performs regularly for many period instrument ensembles, contemporary groups, music festivals and theatres across Europe.
In addition to her performing schedule, Baines is a lecturer in Music at Brunel University London, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Shakespeare's Globe Higher Education department, and is regularly invited to other H.E. institutions for guest lectures and practical workshops.
