A hard-hitting new production of Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny by the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus at the Teatro Real de Madrid.
Composed in the 1930s by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, this is a mordant satire on capitalism and the inexorable industrialisation of a society in which the ultimate crime is not having money. In twenty scenes the authors tell the story of a city lost in the middle of a desert and run by three thugs; in Mahagonny food, sex, gambling and violence rule supreme.
The production by Alex Ollé and Carlus Padrissa, both of La Fura dels Baus, combines enormous inventiveness, joy and energy with awe-inspiring ferocity.
Perfect casting brings together a group of singers – Measha Brueggergosman, Michael König, Jane Henschel and Willard White – who are also marvellous actors.
The Teatro Real Orchestra and Chorus are directed by young Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, who actually began his career at the Teatro Real. In November 2010, he received the “El Ojo Crítico” prize, awarded annually to Spain’s most outstanding artists in the classical music field.

Based on an historical case, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride takes place in the suburbs of Moscow during the reign of Tsar Ivan IV, “the Terrible”, during the latter half of the 16th c. Widowed, he is looking for a new wife, his third. He chooses the young Marfa. She loves another man but bends to the Tsar’s will and renounces her love for the other. From this plot, Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov retains only the frame. A live competition is organized for a virtual monarch, much like the reality shows of today. Here, the characters become the various players of the audiovisual industry bringing an acerbic critic to contemporary television. Daniel Barenboim conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin. With Olga Peretyatko, Anita Rachvelishvili and Johannes and Martin Kränzle. Recorded at Staatsoper, Im Schiller Theater Berlin, in October 2013.

Boogie With Canned Heat, their second studio album, was released in 1968 and features the original lineup with Bob "The Bear" Lite (lead vocals), Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (slide guitar/harmonica/vocals), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (lead guitar), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass guitar) and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums), plus guest appearances by Dr. John and Sunnyland Slim. It includes the hits "On the Road Again," "Amphetamine Annie," and "Fried Hockey Boogie."
Released on the Impulse! Records label in early 1966, the songs are a mix of new compositions and re-workings of tunes John Lee Hooker had previously recorded, and includes a cover of Barrett Strong's 1959 Motown hit "Money (That's What I Want)." With Panama Francis on drums, Milt Hinton on bass, and Barry Galbraith on second guitar, the result is some of the best John Lee Hooker material with a band that you're likely to come across

Double 180 gram audiophile vinyl LP pressing housed in a gatefold sleeve. On a cold November evening in 1980, 3000 jazz fans filled the Salle Wilfrid Pelletier Hall of Place des Arts in Montreal, Quebec to attend what promised to be, a swinging evening featuring six of the biggest names in bebop. Billed The Concert of the Century - A Tribute to Charlie Parker, and under the direction of Dizzy Gillespie - one of the best jazz trumpeters of all time - the event featured legendary performers: Hank Jones - piano, Ray Brown - bass, Milt Jackson - vibes, Philly Joe Jones - drums and James Moody on tenor sax and flute. Local club owner Roue Doudou Boicel, who produced the concert, had the foresight to record the concert in it's entirety. A limited quantity bootleg LP of the concert soon appeared and then disappeared from the marketplace, those tapes lay dormant for over 30 years. This historic recording opens with rapturous applause that sets the tone with Dizzy's own "Blues 'N' Boogie. "Also featured are several classic standards - some more well known then others - including "Darben The Redd Foxx, " "Time On My Hands, " "Get Happy, " "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Stardust." All the players are at the top of their game and having a blast, as evidenced by the banter and repartee between songs. Concert of the Century, pristinely restored and remastered, features two tracks that weren't on the original pressing from the early '80s - Ralph Rainger's "If I Should Lose You" and an incredible eight minute bass solo by Ray Brown.
For this amazing 1965 album (released by the Verve label in February of 1966), Bill Evans and his trio (featuring bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker) meet a 48-piece symphony orchestra conducted and arranged by Claus Ogerman. The Symphony Orchestra album includes compositions by Granados, Bach, Scriabin, Faure, and Chopin as well as two by Evans and one by Ogerman. The results are just beautiful.

Jacob's Ladder is made up of original compositions by Mehldau alongside interpolations and covers of songs by Rush, Gentle Giant and Yes. Featured musicians on the album include Mehldau's label mates Chris Thile and Cecile McLorin Salvant, as well as Mark Guiliana, Becca Stevens, Joel Frahm, and others.
Spyro Gyra's new release Vinyl Tap, their first album of new material in six years, is sure to excite their worldwide fan base as well as to bring new listeners into the fold. Never content to rest on their prodigious work of the past, they have once again challenged themselves to apply their iconic sound to an idea that makes this release stand out from all of it's predecessors. With Vinyl Tap, they have decided to craft an entire album of inventive jazz covers from pop favorites from the vinyl era. But these versions of familiar tunes will surprise the listener as well as entertain them. Whether it's turning Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" into a Latin big band sound or making a tender ballad out of the Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", this release will impress at every turn. They weren't satisfied with just turning Johnny Rivers' 1960's hit "Secret Agent Man" into a rollicking party jam. They added an uptempo melody from "Alfie's Theme" to make something brand new, "Secret Agent Mash". There are also more conventional approaches with faithful versions of songs like War's "The Cisco Kid" and the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes". Spyro Gyra's haunting version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" is going to radio ahead of the release, so we anticipate high consumer awareness.
Louis Prima's Angelina was released in 1973. Featuring his backing band, Sam Butera & The Witnesses, the album delivers a lively and entertaining collection of some of Prima's most enduring songs, including "Baciagaloop", "Please No Squeeza Da Banana", "Mari Yootch", "Che La Luna", "Mama", and "Josephina."
I was so happy to hear the latest new music from Matthew Curry. I've always really admired Mathew's music, ever since he, and his band began playing shows with us, maybe 6, or 7 years ago. The audience loved his well crafted songs, soaring guitar solos, and soulful singing. We were part of that audience. He is the real deal. His most recent album, 'Open Road', is further proof that Matthew Is continuing to hone his formidable chops. Mathew rips it up on the title track, which reminds me of a Delaney & Bonnie style Eric Clapton tune, and I say this with admiration, since that is one of my favorite Clapton eras. 'On My Way', is just great rointuneck 'n roll, in sort of a Skynyrd vein. 'I Think Of You', a beautiful ballad of lost love, and hope. Then there is some extreme angst in 'Workin' It Out'. A really interesting production, and once again, some killer guitar playing, and amazing vocals. Every song on the album has something special that sets it apart, and makes this a complete package. I've listened to all the songs several times, and I continue to hear things I hadn't noticed before. There's so much great music on this recording. I can't recommend it enough.
