UNITED STATES NAVY BAND: Ports of Call

•Heritage of the March is a series of 185 vinyl records of marches and galops released from 1973 to the early 1980’s. It remains as the largest single march music record series in history, featuring close to 3,000 different marches! Volumes 7 and 8 feature the marches of Russell Alexander, Gabriel Pares, Joseph Olivadoti, and Franz Lehar, a combination of American, French, and Hungarian composers. These marches highlight the best of the genre from both the United States and Europe, re-mastered for CD release. Altissimo! Recordings is proud to release the next installment of this classic collection as a two-volume set.

Here is an unusual military band CD. The 37 selections are divided into Marches by the US Marine Band and the US Army Band, Americana by the US Navy Band and Sea Chanters chorus, the USAF Band and Singing Sergeants and the US Army Band and Chorus, Family, Ceremonial where the US Coast Guard Band is added and finally a section called Bugle Calls where all the famous calls are recorded including Reveille, First Call, Assembly, Attention, Tattoo and Taps. The Marches include all the most popular ones, while Americana includes The Liberty Fanfare, Amazing Grace, God Bless the USA and America the Beautiful, among others. The section called Ceremonial includes everything from the National Anthem to the US Public Health Service March.

The Sea Chanters, the 17-voice chorus of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., was organized in 1956, as an all male chorus specializing in songs of the sea. Female voices were added in 1980 and their repertoire was expanded. They perform throughout the United States, and often perform at the White House, Vice President's house and for Washington dignitaries. In 1994, the chorus provided music at the funerals of former President Nixon in Yorba Linda, California, and former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis at Arlington National Cemetery.

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) carries a musical legacy that extends beyond the realms of being a writer or bandleader. His music still stands as a brilliant model of American compositional creativity. Although Ellington had a profound influence in the world of jazz, his mastery extends even further into several other compositional outputs including concerti, tone poems, film scores, ballets, big band arrangements and several operas. The four works found on Duke Ellington: The Symphonic Portrait are some of these masterworks that were eventually arranged for the symphony orchestra. Each selection varies greatly in structure, however Ellington’s visionary compositional style, combined with his discomfort with musical labels such as jazz and classical, resulted in a genre that integrated these distinct styles most effectively.

The Heritage of John Philip Sousa, Vol. 5

The newest release from Altissimo! Celebrates the music of Percy Grainger, both familiar and unknown, recorded live in 2011 at a concert given in observation of the 50th anniversary of composer death, performed by the "President's Own" US Marine Band under Colonel Michael J. Colburn in collaboration with the Choral Arts Society of Washington. The title The Music Lover's Grainger was borrowed from one of Grainger's many unfinished publishing projects, reflecting the world premiere recordings featured on the program. These include a version of "The Lost Lady Found", the final number of Lincolnshire Posy, transcribed for band and chorus, based on Grainger's original setting for chorus and orchestra; the original, unpublished band version of "Spoon River", reconstructed from the recently discovered manuscript parts; and a rarely heard, otherworldly harmonization of the "Londonderry Air", the tune of "Danny Boy", scored for band, chorus, and organ. A significant amateur ethnomusicologist, Grainger drew extensively from folksong, collecting several hundred tunes from the English countryside himself. The repertoire recorded here includes English, Irish, Scottish, American, and Danish influences.

Caroling is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years as a joyful part of the winter holiday season. Since the Eisenhower administration, the Singing Sergeants have been caroling at the White House each December for guests from around the country and throughout the world. All of the songs are performed in the a cappella tradition. Caroling, directed by Captain Chad A.
