In 1963, Simeon ten Holt wrote in his diary that he had it in mind that a concert should be an ongoing performance, with visitors wandering in and out at will. Ten Holt was also fascinated by social processes during these highly formative years. He became interested in time and space. This theme manifested itself in a piece for four keyboards, at the time still entitled Perpetuum. He embarked on this on 19 January 1973. Perpetuum was completed in 1976 but was revised in the period 1976-79 and was then renamed Canto Ostinato. During rehearsals for the premiere, in April 1979, all of the themes that had been occupying Ten Holt seemed to coalesce: small elements that together made up a larger whole; a different form of concert; social processes arising from the freedom that the players had to decide on the number of repetitions; and time and space. Ten Holt never consciously went searching for this form, but when Canto Ostinato began to conquer the musical world it became clear that his solitary quest had drawn something universal from the mists, something that many listeners and musicians would recognise.

The present program presents the kind of music that might have been heard at the Feast of the Swan, an annual banquet held by the Confraternity of Our Illustrious Lady in ’s-Hertogenbosch, sometime in the middle of the sixteenth century. The combination of “sacred” and “secular” pieces might come as a surprise. However, the border between what we in the twenty-first century might imagine as two different musical realms was actually quite porous in the sixteenth. 

One of the Confraternity’s regular banquets, held each year on the first Monday after Holy Innocents’ Day (28 December), was the Feast of the Swan. The Swan was the Confraternity’s heraldic beast, a symbol of grace and purity, attributes of the Blessed Virgin. In the medieval imagination, the swan had musical associations. The anonymous bestiary Physiologus states that the Latin name for the swan (cygnus) comes from the verb “to sing” (canere), because it produces such a beautiful song from its long and flexible neck. It was thus fitting that the Feast of the Swan should include a rich musical component. Some of the singers also played instruments at the banquets.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841), a German composer much admired by Beethoven, was a great innovator in the cello technique. His Sonatas for harp and cello op.5 are a rare example of music for such combination of instruments. The musical material is distributed evenly between the two instruments. The writing, for its time, is to be considered at the limit of virtuosity.

Fourth release by Matteo Cicchitti and his Ensemble Elegentia on Challenge Classics. World premiere recording of Triosonatas op.1 by Michele Mascitti. The work was published in Paris in 1704. In his time Mascitti was particularly esteemed and rightly considered a major testimonial of Italian instrumental music in France in the 18th century. In this oeuvre, which is for once a real discovery, Mascitti tries to combine the tradition of the Corellian sonata with the French 'gout' of the dedicatee, the Duke d'Orléans.

Max Richter's The Recomposed Four Seasons has become an iconic piece. Richter discarded about three quarters of Vivaldi's original and substituted his own music. The new version sounds a little hipper, lighter on its feet in places, darker and more cinematic in others. Artfully, but faithfully, Richter rearranges the notes on the page, revealing anew the radiant melodies and lush timbres of the music. This new recording enjoys the flamboyant fantasy and the technical prowess of Daniel Rowland as solo violin.

After Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert, Jan Willem de Vriend starts a new symphonic cycle dedicated to Schumann. This is the first recording with Stavanger Symphony Orchestra both for the conductor and for Challenge Classics. More than ever through this new and exciting collaboration de Vriend gives a thoroughly original account of the first two symphonies. Just like the French critic Jean Charles Hoffelé puts it, de Vriend is always 'striking'.

Third volume of Mozart Concertos with Ben Kim and Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra. Concertos No. 11, 12, and 13 were Mozart’s first Concertos written upon moving to Vienna from Salzburg. In a letter addressed to his father Leopold, he described them as “a happy medium between too easy and too difficult; very brilliant, pleasing to the ear, and natural, without being vapid.” Once more Kim gives us a thoroughly personal and deep insight into the famous triptych. Kim stylishly extols the intimate as well as the majestic moments.

Freedom is a dominant theme in the English oratorios of Georg Friedrich Handel. These grand works are mostly based on biblical stories that deal with resistance, suppression, captivity and, finally, freedom. Debut album by young countertenor Oscar Verhaar. Oscar selected eight arias drawn from Haendel's English oratorios. Diversified moods and atmospheres and the support of La Sfera Armoniosa baroque orchestra make this disc a constant pleasure to listen to.

This disc couples the last Violin Concerto (1769) by Joseph Haydn with the Double Concerto for Viola and Harpsichord (1762) by his brother Michael: two rarely recorded early Classical gems. This is the debut recording of Pearls in Baroque Chamber Orchestra, composed by some of the best Baroque music players in the Netherlands. The artistic and performance direction is entrusted to two experienced musicians like Ryo Terakado and Noriko Amano.

L’Echo du Danube is the poetic title given by Johann Schenck to his collection of pieces for viola da gamba, first published around 1703/04 as Opus 9 in Amsterdam by Estienne Roger — the most important music printer at the time. L’Echo du Danube is Schenk’s last complete work to survive, a fact that gives these pieces the weight of a musical testament. It comprises six sonatas for solo viol: the first two sonatas with basso continuo accompaniment, the next two also with basso continuo but this time ad libitum (optional), and the two last ones for viola da gamba without any accompaniment. Although Marin Marais already had published his first book of Pièces de Viole in 1686 and the flourishing English viol tradition was well known in Northern Europe, Schenk’s approach to the instrument is an important step in the process of creating an independent repertoire, specifically written for the viol by composers who were themselves performers and masters of its idiomatic idiosyncrasies. Although Schenck fully explores the potential of the viol as a melodic instrument, he clearly favoured, its possibilities of playing chords, in a manner strongly influenced by lute playing and repertoire: he sought to show the viol as an instrument that is harmonically independent, appropriate for polyphonic writing besides its talent for melodic singing. Hence his writing in such a distinctive way: abundantly using chords and double stops; continually alternating between the bass and the high register; and striving for an effective combination of luxurious harmony and depth of sound, without losing sight of the delicately cantabile voice of the viola.

Fourteenth disc by Ars Antiqua Austria and Gunar Lezbor for Challenge Classics. World Premiere Recordings of three Cantatas for countertenor and violins. Alois Muhlbacher is one of most sought-after countertenors today: in 2023 has engagement with Minkowski (Alcina), Haselboeck (Bach) and tours with a Farinelli arias recital… Bononcini’s Cantatas look like a Trilogy on the theme of longing for a distant love. They were perceived in their time as innovative and progressive, directed towards the future.

Despite the very large number of recordings already made of this musical corpus, Minnaar and de Vriend have proved that they have something new and totally their own to say about this collection of masterpieces. And it is indeed the peculiar blend of sheer energy and esprit de finesse that can be identified as the distinctive brand or these recordings. Klaus Mertens had long been wanting to record the ‘Geistliche Lieder’ by Johann Sebastian Bach from Schemelli’s Musicalisches Gesangbuch (1736). Ton Koopman had been looking for the right program to showcase the beautiful Teschemacher chamber organ in Oosterland and realised it would actually be an ideal match with the program his friend Klaus Mertens had in mind. So in early 2023 Mertens and Koopman spent some (rather cold but) inspired days in Oosterland to record this selection of 24 songs, interspersed with six organ works.

With the present programme we want to explore the history of the German Lied throughout a period spanning some 800 years, from that first light of dawn represented by the earliest music scored with modern notation - courtly love songs by Walther von der Vogelweide (1170-1230) and Oswald von Wolkenstein (1377-1445) - down to such present-day emissaries of the Lied tradition as Aribert Reimann and Wolfgang Rihm. In between we find: J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Hensel, Wolf, Berg, and Eisler.

A new, great project by Challenge Classics and Jan Willem de Vriend. A new, inspiring collaboration with a first-rate pianist, Dejan Lazić, and one of European best orchestras, the Bergen Philharmonic.
