V�clav Jan Krvtitel Tom�ek wrote numerous songs and short piano pieces. His works predate those of his rather more famous near contemporary Franz Schubert by some years but remain mysterious neglected. Tom�ek was one of the very few composers of Goethe settings to meet with the great poet's (relatively) undivided approval.

Bach wrote three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Scholars estimate they were composed in the early 1740s, possibly for Carl Fredrich Abel, son of Bach's colleague Christian Ferdinand Abel. They are paired here with Scarlatti's Gamba Sonata and a Violin Sonata by Handel. These works are performed by violinist Robin Michael, cellist Steven Isserlis and harpsichordist Richard Egarr in a program of haunting tranquility.

Rachmaninov fans won't want to miss this was Gramophone's verdict on Steven Osborne's recording of the �tudes-tableaux, and this thrilling new release is an equally essential acquisition. Osborne proves a predictably fine exponent of the Faustian Piano Sonata No.1 and is no less compelling in the selection of shorter works which completes the album.

This important release once again demonstrates Steven Isserlis's deep commitment to the music of John Tavener. The realization of the album is movingly detailed in a booklet note which provides an eloquent counterpoint and commentary to the performances.

Scriabin clearly responded to the passionate and emotionally charged nature of the mazurka, qualities shared by all twenty-three of the exquisite miniatures recorded here by Andrey Gugnin.

As companionable, healthy and English as the South Downs on a sunny day was the early verdict on Thomas Dunhill's Piano Quintet. The same could apply equally to Erlanger's Piano Quintet. Both works receive attractive performances from Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet.

2020 release. If the name of Henry Charles Litolff is familiar today only through the scherzo of his Concerto symphonique No 4, the absurdity of that 'one-hit composer' tag is clearly demonstrated by this release. These are among the finest examples of the piano trio genre still inexplicably absent from the standard repertoire.

No fewer than three important first recordings of works by Duarte Lobo are featured on this album from Cupertinos and Lu�s Toscano. This is music with which they feel a natural kinship, as these intense, idiomatic performances can attest.

The London Oratory Schola Cantorum illustrates the Golden Age with this selection of motets from sixteenth-century Spain culminating in Alonso Lobo's great funerary ode for Philip II, Versa est in luctum.
