Of course that's the answer-it can't be done. Like the Great Unus, is this some kind of magician's trick Mr. Rich is putting on us? - that we really don't hear or see what we think we do? I recall standing with Shelly Manne and Bobby Rosengarden at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1978. We stood to the right side of the bandstand so Shelly and Bobby could watch Buddy's right foot! Just his right foot! After the set, they looked at each other in disbelief. It was obviously an illusion they had seen. During a Rich engagement in Los Angeles some years ago, twenty-two drummers were in the audience. At the conclusion of the "Channel One Suite" half of them were openly crying. One should not try to explain the magician's trick-once you know the modus of operandi, the thrill is gone. So keep your secrets, Buddy Rich, and let the audience forever be amazed and in wonderment of your art. Most widely known as the composer of the Brazilian standard 'The Girl from Ipanema', Antonio Carlos Jobim rose to fame n the 1960s as one of the most prominent leaders in the bossa nova revolution. Here, he appears with singer Gal Costa, who accompanied Caetano Veloso at the forefront of the Tropicalismo movement. They perform such songs as 'Desafinado', 'Agua de Beber', and 'Gabriela'.

BLACK WAX is a musical-political entertainment film produced and directed by Robert Mugge. It centers on the late African American poet-singer-songwriter Gil Scott-Heron - the man Melody Maker called "the most dangerous musician alive" and many dubbed the forefather of rap music - and his Midnight Band. This 1981 live show at Washington DC's famous Blues Alley features drummer extraordinaire Max Roach and his band. Filmed lovingly by filmmaker Gary Keys, this intimate portrait of Roach is stunning in it's simplicity. The music and interplay between the musicians is the main focus, almost like the camera is eavesdropping on a private jam session. The band sounds full and fierce, the film crisp and personal, every note a celebration.

Pat Martino. A guitarist's guitarist. A musician's musician. Jazz legend. Open Road is a documentary of Pat Martino. It is the story of the difficult road back from a brain aneurysm that nearly killed and left him without memory or the ability to play his guitar. Les Paul remarked upon hearing the 11 year old Martino, "that he was tempted to ask Pat for lessons." George Benson upon first arriving in New York and hearing Pat at Small's Paradise said, "they came to a break in the music, and this guitar leaped out of nowhere, playing some of the most incredible lines I had ever heard. And I said to myself, 'If this (playing) is a sample of what New York is like, I'm getting out of here.'"
