Of this unique recording of a father-and-son team, Chicago Tribune of June 8, 1980 summed up quite eloquently, 'Duets is an unassuming title for one of the loveliest recordings of this or any other year - a SteepleChase album on which guitarist Jimmy Raney joins his guitarist-son, Doug Raney, in a musical dialog so closely knit that often it is hard to tell which Raney is taking the lead...' Originally released in 1980, now newly remastered in 24 bit/96 kHz and pressed on 180g vinyl this edition reveals the warmth, nuance, and subtle interplay that make Duets one of the most distinguished entries in the Raney legacy and a timeless SteepleChase classic. 'In closing I would like to say that I feel that this album and »Stolen Moments« are unquestionably some of my best work to date.' (Jimmy Raney December 1979 - liner notes)

Drummer composer Steve Johns returns to SteepleChase with Extrasensory, his most fully realized statement since his acclaimed 2024 release Mythology (SCCD 31971). Reuniting the same core ensemble - guitarist John Hart, vibraphonist/harmonica player Monte Croft, pianist Greg Murphy, and bassist Joris Teepe - Johns builds on the band's deepening chemistry, now sharpened by the fiery presence of saxophonist Troy Roberts on select tracks. The program highlights Johns' dual gifts: modern, structurally inventive writing and dynamic, deeply musical drumming shaped by decades on the New York scene. Contrafacts, reharmonized standards, soulful vocals, and vibrant originals form a wide stylistic arc, from angular modern swing to luminous ballads and earthy shuffles. Throughout, Johns shapes textures and grooves with masterful clarity, guiding a group whose intuitive interplay truly earns the album's title. Extrasensory affirms Johns as a drummer leader of imagination and unmistakable voice. 'Mythology' is an album full of imagination, stories and some fantastic playing by this amazing lineup of world-class musicians.' (A Green Review on SCCD 31971)

Tenor saxophonist Matt Garcia makes a compelling SteepleChase debut with Three's Up, revealing a mature voice shaped by deep study, hard work, and a fast rising presence on the New York scene. A Texas native now at Juilliard, Garcia brings a blend of tradition with modern clarity that reflects his years in NYO Jazz (Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra), his award winning early career, and formative mentorship from artists such as Dave Pietro and Christian McBride. Joined by bassist Martin Wind and drummer Billy Drummond, he leads a vibrant trio through standards, bebop classics, and five originals that highlight his melodic focus and rhythmic drive. Pieces like 'White Silence' and 'Dance's Dance' showcase a young composer with a clear artistic identity. Three's Up introduces a tenor saxophonist whose expressive depth mark him as a significant new voice to watch.

With Traces of Light, saxophonist and composer Jan Prax presents a deeply expressive and spiritually charged new album. Known as one of Europe's most distinctive saxophonists and a protege of David Sanborn, Prax draws from jazz tradition, improvisation, and a broad musical imagination to create a sound that is vibrant, soulful, and unmistakably his own. Joined by Carl-Henri Morisset on piano, Riccardo Del Fra on double bass, and Zhitong Xu on drums, Prax leads a quartet built on trust, intuition, and shared musical purpose. Across nine original compositions, the album moves through tension, stillness, searching energy, and lyrical release. From the opening lift of 'Elevation' and the smouldering intensity of 'Cold Flame' to the reflective beauty of 'Hope in Bloom,' 'Reverie,' and the title track, the music breathes, expands, and glows with emotional clarity. At it's heart, Traces of Light is an album about connection, compassion, and presence. It is music shaped by fire and finesse, but also by openness and vulnerability and a journey toward light, shared by kindred spirits.

A halo is something like an aura. Cologne-based singer Anette Von Eichel certainly doesn't want to put a halo on her new album, but a halo is also a luminous phenomenon, such as a moonlit ring or a wreath of light, as often seen in nature and everyday life, and which can be interpreted as a revelation of whatever nature. This title couldn't be more fitting for Anette Von Eichel's collection of songs on her new album, and in more ways than one. All of these songs share a nocturnal quality, in which light emerges from the darkness. In the sequence of her songs, we experience a dreamlike journey of a resurrection of the morning twilight from the night.   In a metaphorical sense, it makes a huge difference whether you listen to the album for the first, second, or third time, because an impressive process of transcendence takes place. What at first simply sounds like a series of clearly defined songs in their respective forms gradually transforms into a kind of vocal and musical mass of light, which acts as a parallel phenomenon to reality. This spectral shift culminates in a halo of light that dissolves all forms and contours, a concept perfectly captured by the album title. "When I write a song, it's a conscious process, but the subconscious naturally plays a major role," Anette Von Eichel explains, describing this transformation from her perspective. "With this album in particular, I hope to give people the opportunity to take a step back from their everyday lives and experience a similar transformation while listening."   Listening to the album, regardless of the lyrics, inevitably evokes the feeling that someone is telling a story. From the osmosis of voice and music emerges a flow that inescapably draws the ear into it's vortex. Pianist Sebastian Sternal, bassist Henning Sieverts, and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel become the material and metaphysical vehicles of these stories, which Anette Von Eichel brings to the stage of her song theater with breathtaking versatility. She starts with the lyrics when writing and tries to discover the sound hidden behind the words. "The word enters into a symbiosis with the interaction of our band," the composer explains, describing this phenomenon of the text dissolving into sound. The songs possess a great flexibility, expressed through nuanced improvisation, which allows the songs to grow not only with each performance but, as already mentioned, with each listen.   "Halo" is the third album Anette Von Eichel has recorded with Sternal, Sieverts, and Burgwinkel in six years. The ease of their interplay, the constant negotiation between collective density and individual detachment, and the spontaneous use of open sections reach a new peak here. Eichel's signature style, unmistakable in it's trinity of classic jazz vocals a la Carmen McRae and Betty Carter, singer-songwriter influences in the tradition of Joni Mitchell, and the timbre of French chansons, sounds like standards that have been in the air for decades. They may feature strong melodies and complex rhythms, but the song as a whole always takes center stage, with which the individual elements must harmonize.   There aren't many singers whose voices, both spoken and sung, exhibit such a striking difference as Anette Von Eichel's. When she sings, she doesn't simply slip into a different persona; she confronts hidden inner worlds that couldn't manifest in her everyday use of her voice. This creates an immediate magic, where the sound of her voice is inextricably linked to the specific emotions of the song. "I'm interested in drawing out all the emotions hidden within my voice," says Anette Von Eichel. "When I sing, I delve much deeper into myself and can uncover far more nuances." Which brings us back to the interplay of light and shadow. She slips into roles, often shifting perspectives even within a single song, employing unconventional vocal techniques like sighs or creaks, and using breath as a creative element.   "Halo" is built from light, and yet this album, like few others, creates a pressure equalization that is transmitted from the four musicians to the listener in an almost hypnotic way. The more one embarks on this journey into the twilight and the nuances of human experience, the more liberating the effect. "Halo" is a passionate declaration of the poetic clarity of ambiguity. Let us refrain at this point from pathos-laden phrases like healing, spirituality, or the pulse of life, and instead take the album objectively and soberly for what it is: precisely the right statement for our time. by Wolf Kampmann

With Every Petal Tells a Story, guitarist and composer Tiago Lageira presents an intimate musical portrait of love, commitment and the transformation of becoming a parent. Rooted in personal memory, the album unfolds like a sequence of emotional chapters: from the first spark of romance to marriage, from expectation to birth, and from uncertainty to the overwhelming discovery of a love growing beyond oneself. Lageira's music carries the imprint of several worlds. Born in Portugal and shaped by the traditions of Fado and Brazilian rhythm, he later immersed himself in Amsterdam's jazz scene, absorbing the language of improvisation, harmony and storytelling. His playing combines melodic sensitivity with rhythmic fluidity, bringing together Portuguese lyricism, modern jazz colours and a deeply personal sense of narrative. Across seven original compositions, Every Petal Tells a Story invites a rich cast of voices and instrumental guests. The album features Vanessa Torrens Juaneda, Anna Serierse, Hermine Deurloo, Jina Sudemi, Iris Feijen and Marisa Petraglia, each adding a distinct shade to Lageira's musical world. From the atmospheric opening of 'Under the Shadow of the Lotus' to the reflective closing piece 'Futuro Incerto,' the album moves through tenderness, wonder, doubt and devotion. The title reflects the album's essence: every moment, every memory and every fragile detail carries meaning. Like petals gathered from different seasons of life, these compositions form a story of love in bloom: vulnerable, resilient and profoundly human. Every Petal Tells a Story is both a personal dedication and a universal invitation: to listen closely to the quiet turning points that shape our lives, and to hear in them the music of becoming.

24-year-old Tuva Bergenheim is a Swedish drummer, composer, and bandleader from Stockholm who, with her debut album Skargardsjazz (Archipelago Jazz), creates a dreamy and melancholic sound where Swedish jazz meets pop, visa, and Nordic folk music. Unlike other Swedish jazz artists, there are no influences here of traditional vocal jazz or the American standard repertoire. As a drummer, composer, and lyricist, she shapes a personal sound that defies expectations - dreamy, melancholic, and a unique blend of old Sweden and modern jazz.

Two of the most distinctive voices on the contemporary Danish jazz scene, chromatic harmonica player Mathias Heise and guitarist Pelle von Bulow, join forces on Repertoire, a duo album built on interplay, shared intuition, and a carefully selected body of songs spanning jazz standards, soul, pop, and contemporary material. At it's core, Repertoire reflects the long-standing musical familiarity between Heise and von Bulow. Working as equals in a stripped-down duo setting, the two musicians treat each piece as a flexible framework for improvisation rather than a fixed arrangement. The music unfolds in real time through dialogue, contrast, and a finely tuned sense of balance between structure and freedom. The repertoire draws from a wide range of jazz and pop standards. It includes So Tender by Keith Jarrett, Besame Mucho by Consuelo Velazquez, and Beatrice by Sam Rivers. From the pop and soul canon, the album features Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder, Rock with You by Rod Temperton, popularized by Michael Jackson, and One Day I'll Fly Away, alongside Angel Zoo by Danish band Phlake. Further repertoire threads include Velas, written by the great Brazilian composer and singer Ivan Lins. Always and Forever is part of the broader soul repertoire associated with Heatwave. The album closes with Bluesette, one of the defining compositions in the jazz harmonica tradition, also by Toots Thielemans, and a natural reference point for Heise's instrument. Mathias Heise has established himself internationally as one of the most original voices on the chromatic harmonica. In 2013, he won the Chromatic Harmonica World Championship, followed by the Danish Crown Prince Couple's Stardust Award in 2016 and the Ben Webster Prize in 2017. He was the first musician admitted to the Rhythmic Music Conservatory with chromatic harmonica as his main instrument, and has since released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including his 2023 Storyville quintet album, Mouth Games. Heise is a true virtuoso with a harmonic curiosity and stylistic openness. He can play anything! Guitarist Pelle von Bulow is an established figure on the Danish jazz scene. He is one of a generation of guitarists who are inspired by the legacy of Doug Raney, who lived in Copenhagen. Pelle von Bulow is also a virtuoso and has, among others, incorporated influences from legends such as George Benson as well as the Brazilian jazz guitar tradition. Coming from a family with a strong jazz tradition, Pelle von Bulow is the son of acclaimed alto saxophonist Christina von Bulow, and represents a younger generation of Danish jazz guitarists rooted in both tradition and contemporary expression. Repertoire shows how contemporary jazz continues to evolve through a new generation of musicians.

A crossover where spoken word and poetry meet jazz improvisation and the power of the big band. In this unique production, the acclaimed poet and performer Daniel Boyacioglu, the skilled jazz pianist Mathias Landaeus, and the renowned Bohuslan Big Band come together. The music is based on Daniel Boyacioglu and Mathias Landaeus Trio's albums Bon for varlden (Prayer for the World) and alska oss nu (Love Us Now), but here takes on entirely new dimensions in arrangements for big band. This Time is a concert that moves straight into the fractures and connections of the present moment. With Daniel Boyacioglu's poetic texts as a starting point, it reflects questions of identity, belonging, love, and power - where the personal is inseparably intertwined with the political. It is an observation of the now, marked by vulnerability and resistance, where anger, tenderness, humour, and prayer exist side by side. Together with Mathias Landaeus's sensitive improvisations and the powerful soundscapes of the Bohuslan Big Band, the words become both fragile and monumental - a shared attempt to understand this time, while we are living in it. Daniel and Mathias first met on the stage of Fasching in the early 2000s. Since then, they have built both a deep friendship and an artistic brotherhood. Now they are taking the next step, opening the door to a new musical encounter - together with the Bohuslan Big Band.

With The Empty Mirror, acclaimed Danish pianist Carsten Dahl presents one of his most distilled recordings to date: twelve spontaneous solo piano improvisations captured in a single uninterrupted creative process on a Steinway D grand piano in the historic Radiohuset in Copenhagen, now home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music. The album is due for release on October 2, 2026 on Exlibris Musik. The twelve-track album originated as part of recording engineer Jonas Eliyah Munch-Hansen's final project. Rather than placing Dahl in the controlled environment of a conventional studio, Hansen chose Studio 1 in the former Radiohuset, allowing the hall's remarkable acoustics and distinctive atmosphere to become an integral part of the music. The concept was deliberately simple: Dahl would respond freely to a text of his own choosing, with no musical instructions beyond allowing the process to unfold. Throughout the album, the spacious resonance of the hall remains ever present, giving the listener the sensation of occupying the same room as the instrument. Upon entering the room and seeing the piano, Dahl simply began to play. There was no rehearsal and virtually no soundcheck. The recording captures music as it emerged, moment by moment. For Dahl, the project reflects a central artistic conviction: that music already exists before the performer reaches for it. The musician's task is not to impose ideas upon the music but to become sufficiently open for it to reveal itself. This philosophy gave rise to both the recording and it's title, The Empty Mirror, a metaphor for a state of presence in which intention gives way to listening. Throughout a career spanning jazz, classical music and free improvisation, Carsten Dahl has established himself as one of Scandinavia's most distinctive musical voices. Celebrated for his extraordinary imagination, technical command and deeply personal approach to improvisation, he continues to challenge conventional ideas of composition and performance. The Empty Mirror strips his musical language to it's essence, presenting an intimate document of artistic presence in it's purest form.

Storyville Records presents Between Then and Now, a new trio album by acclaimed American pianist Christian Sands, joined by Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbaek and Swedish drummer Rasmus Kihlberg. An international collaboration that captures contemporary jazz at the intersection of American tradition and Nordic musical sensibility. The album features 7 tracks, balancing original compositions by Sands and Fonnesbaek with inspired reinterpretations of jazz standards and classic repertoire by Bobby Timmons, Luiz Bonfa, and John Coltrane. Recorded in the spirit of Copenhagen's jazz tradition it presents jazz as both a living art form of the present and a dialogue with it's past, hence the title Between Then and Now. The collaboration grew from Sands' relationship with the Copenhagen jazz scene, initiated when former Montmartre musical director Christian Brorsen discovered him online and invited him to Denmark. Like earlier generations of American jazz musicians, including Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon, Sands quickly became a compelling presence in Copenhagen, where attentive listening and subtle interplay guide every performance. Over the years, he has been a frequent guest in Denmark and loved by the audience here. Together, the trio represents a truly international jazz language. Sands is celebrated for his virtuosic piano playing, rich harmonic imagination, and improvisational energy. Fonnesbaek, one of Europe's leading bassists, offers melodic clarity and technical brilliance shaped by the Danish jazz tradition, while Kihlberg contributes a refined rhythmic approach marked by elegance, precision and responsiveness. Together they have a compelling sound of openness yet you always feel the classic American jazz tradition in the music. This is modern American/ Scandinavian music, not just jazz. Listen to Sands' inventive arrangement of Giant Leaves, which merges John Coltrane's Giant Steps with Joseph Kosma's Autumn Leaves, served as a tribute to legendary Danish drummer Alex Riel, who influenced both Sands and generations of jazz musicians in Europe. Original compositions such as Sands' Where Children Still Play and Where the Light Settles, and Fonnesbaek's Searching in Sahara reveal the trio's lyrical and exploratory approach. The Nordic hymn Til ungdommen / To the Youth (Kringsatt av Fiender) is another beautiful example of how this trio sound together. Enjoy this contemporary recording with three of the most interesting musicians on the Scandinavian and American jazz scene right now.

On Disambiguation, guitarist and composer Christy Doran joins forces with Indian tabla player Imran Khan for a vivid, border-crossing duo album that brings together rock energy, blues feeling, jazz improvisation, Irish melodic traces and the subtle rhythmic flow of Indian classical music. Doran's guitar language is instantly recognizable: shimmering textures, sharp rhythmic accents, eruptive solos, intricate patterns and a fearless sense of movement. After six decades of musical exploration, he returns here with renewed clarity to the roots that have shaped his playing: blues, rock, Hendrix, McLaughlin, improvisation and, more recently, the Irish music of his family heritage. Echoes of Uilleann pipe melodies can be heard in pieces such as 'Ode to Johnny Doran' and 'Dark Slender Boy', where folk material is transformed into Doran's own highly personal sound world. Imran Khan's tabla provides both pulse and atmosphere. A distinguished player of the Delhi Gharana, Khan brings warmth, clarity and expressive depth to the music. His gently shifting rhythmic patterns open a space in which Doran's acoustic and electric guitars can move freely between drive, abstraction, lyricism and intensity. The album title points to a kind of artistic clarification. The ambiguities are not simplified, but illuminated. Across pieces such as 'Disambiguation', 'Haute Savoie', 'Taal Pravaah' and 'Mantra On An Irish Stream', the duo creates music that is fluid, forceful and deeply rooted, yet always open to surprise. Disambiguation is a meeting of two distinctive musical voices: Christy Doran's expansive guitar art and Imran Khan's refined tabla tradition. Together they create a sound that is direct, exploratory and full of depth.

With their neww album Tolstoy, Too Noisy Fish, the trio of Peter Vandenberghe (piano, compositions), Kristof Roseeuw, and Teun Verbruggen, opens a new chapter full of freedom and adventure. The moves effortlessly between composition and improvisation, between order and chaos, between what is planned and what emerges in the moment. Too Noisy Fish first made it's mark in the Belgian jazz landscape in 2011, when the rhythm section of the Flat Earth Society Orchestra decided to start pushing boundaries as a trio too. They created four albums, including 'Too Many Fish: 10 Years Too Noisy Fish', a record celebrating the ten year anniversary of the trio by inviting musician and artist friends to join them in the studio and on stage. With their upcoming album, they are once again establishing themselves as a singular trio. The band shows how music can be at once profound and light, sharp and open-hearted, fully in line with the seeming contradictions that are rife in Tolstoy's work. Each piece is a journey, unpredictable, honest, and full of twists, with freedom and adventure as the compass, and no fixed destination. The compositions breathe literature: melodies unfold like sentences, rhythms collide like characters, harmonies pose questions rather than giving answers. Too Noisy Fish remains true to it's distinctive sound world: incisive, playful, unsettling, yet always imbued with deep human warmth. On Tolstoy, the music moves freely through space, silence, humor, and melancholy. An album about the lust for life, choices, and the endless search for meaning; in sound, in silence, in freedom.

Swedish vocalist Anna Pauline Andersson celebrates over two decades in jazz with her new album, Lucky To Be Me, on Storyville Records. The album is a culmination of years of artistic exploration, mentorship, and collaborative discovery. It features standout performances, including a trumpet solo by jazz legend Randy Brecker on Pauline's original composition Just One Song and a duet with Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer on the title track. This 8-track recording includes one original composition and seven interpretations of jazz standards, cinematic favorites, and musical theatre classics. The repertoire reflects Pauline's deep engagement with the Great American Songbook, the narrative richness of musical theatre, and the improvisational possibilities of jazz. Each track captures a moment of musical conversation and spontaneous discovery, anchored by Pauline's luminous voice and emotional depth. The project gained momentum in 2023, when Pauline met Siegel in Sweden through pianist Mattias Nilsson. Their first duet sparked a musical understanding that quickly evolved into mentorship and collaboration. Siegel later introduced Pauline to pianist, arranger, and producer John Di Martino, whose arrangements and artistic direction shape the album's sound. Di Martino assembled a group of top New York jazz musicians and crafted each arrangement to showcase both Pauline's voice and the ensemble's improvisational interplay. The sessions were recorded in New York with a strong emphasis on live interaction, allowing the music to unfold naturally. For Pauline, Lucky To Be Me realizes a long-held dream while marking a personal and musical turning point. Recording in New York, the birthplace of much of the music that inspired her, was both symbolic and deeply meaningful. Working closely with Di Martino, Pauline blended her Nordic sensibility with the rhythmic vitality and storytelling of American jazz. This creative dialogue has produced arrangements that honor the original material while highlighting her distinctive interpretive voice. This collaborative approach shapes the album's repertoire, which combines an original composition with reinterpretations of classics from jazz, film, and musical theatre. Tracks like Leonard Bernstein's Lucky To Be Me and Michel Legrand's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg showcase Pauline's capacity to inhabit each song fully, while Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music highlight her subtle phrasing and improvisational creativity. Collaborators including saxophonist Aaron Heick, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, and percussionists Khalil Kwame Bell and Vince Cherico bring drive and textural richness to each performance. Recorded at Trading 8s Recording Studio in New Jersey, with duets tracked in Sweden, and mixed and mastered by Dave Darlington at Bass Hit Studio in New York City, the album unites two musical worlds: a Nordic jazz voice in dialogue with American tradition, enriched by mentorship and musical lineage. Lucky To Be Me is a celebration of connection, creativity, and the joy of jazz storytelling, bringing together musicians, traditions, and generations in a shared musical journey.

Miles' band members were Kenny Garrett, Foley, Deron Johnson, Richard Patterson and Ricky Wellman. This is the final volume of the Miles Davis "Lost" series (double CD).
