Commissioned by NASA for the Kronos Quartet and featuring pre-recorded sounds from the plasma around planets, Terry Riley's Sun Rings is about as close an experience to being in space as it is possible to be. The ten-movement 'spacescape', as Riley refers to it, is a multimedia work for quartet and chorus, opening with recorded audio of the static heard from radio emissions in space. These are all triggered by members of the quartet's hand movements over sensors.

2022 release. Nonesuch Records releases the first recordings of Steve Reich's Runner (2016) and Music for Ensemble and Orchestra (2018), performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conducted by Susanna Mlkki. Reich says Runner is written "for a large ensemble of winds, percussion, pianos, and strings. While the tempo remains more or less constant, there are five movements, played without pause, that are based on different note durations." Music for Ensemble and Orchestra is an extension of the Baroque concerto grosso where there is more than one soloist," the composer continues. "Here there are twenty soloists-all regular members of the orchestra, including the first stand strings and winds, as well as two vibraphones and two pianos. The piece is in five movements, though the tempo never changes, only the note value of the constant pulse in the pianos. Thus, an arch form: sixteenths, eighths, quarters, eighths, sixteenths. Music for Ensemble and Orchestra is modeled on my Runner, which has the same five movement form."

Thomas Ads' Dante-a ballet score in three parts based on Dante Alighieri's La Divina Commedia-was recorded by the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel at a concert performance last spring at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Nonesuch Records releases the album, the work's premiere audio recording, on April 21, 2023. Dante was first performed at the Royal Opera House as part of Wayne McGregor's The Dante Project for the Royal Ballet, with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and with designs by visual artist Tacita Dean. The piece's three parts are "Inferno, " "Purgatorio, " and "Paradiso. "Dante is inspired by the alternately chilling and sunlit landscapes of La Divina Commedia. Written in the fourteenth century, this seminal Italian poem recounts an initiatory journey through hell, purgatory, and paradise. McGregor and Ads bring the medieval Christian fantasy to life with a narrative arc about a young woman named Beatrice who embodies a promise of love and hope. Opra National de Paris, where Dudamel is Music Director, performs The Dante Project this April and May; the London Philharmonic features Dante's first part performs "Inferno" performs on a February 22 concert program conducted by Ads.

Apr 21, 2017
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release, an album of Bach works recorded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and bassist Edgar Meyer. The album comprises works by J.S. Bach originally written for keyboard instruments, plus one sonata for viola da gamba. In 2011, Ma, Thile, and Meyer-along with Stuart Duncan-collaborated on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammy Awards. Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer's first recording together was the 1996 album Appalachia Waltz, which also featured fiddler Mark O'Connor; that album was followed by Appalachian Journey, also with O'Connor, in 2000. Thile then joined Meyer on Ma's 2008 holiday album, Songs of Joy and Peace, before the trio reunited, along with Stuart Duncan, for The Goat Rodeo Sessions, an album of original tunes drawing from the musicians' backgrounds in bluegrass, classical, and American roots music. As Ma told Billboard at that time: "How often do you work with people who are master virtuosos and also master improvisers and composers, who know at least two musical traditions unbelievably well?" He continued, "It's just extraordinary when you have people who can actually show on their instruments what they're thinking at any moment, without a delay. As soon as you think it, it gets transferred in your neuromusculature immediately into sound."

Jul 11, 2025
Nonesuch Records releases an album comprising the first recordings of Steve Reich's two latest works-Jacob's Ladder (2023) and Traveler's Prayer (2020) -on July 11, 2025. Jacob's Ladder, performed by the New York Philharmonic led by Jaap van Zweden with Synergy Vocals, was made during it's October 2023 world premiere at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. The premiere recording of Traveler's Prayer, performed by Colin Currie Group and Synergy Vocals, was made at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, also in 2023. The two pieces were first released earlier this year as part of Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven-disc box set featuring music recorded during the composer's forty years on the label. Jacob's Ladder interprets, and draws text from, the Biblical book of Genesis, 28:12: And he dreamedAnd behold, a ladder set up on the EarthAnd it's top reached HeavenAnd behold, messengers of G-d ascending and descending on it. The composer explains, "Any melodic movement-up, down, or held-can find it's analogy on a ladder. Sometimes one only goes up a few rungs to reach something and then descends, or perhaps climbs higher, pauses, and then descends pausing at each rung on the way down. "There are four short sections-exposition, if you like-on each of the four lines of text then four longer sections elaborating on and developing those first four, " he continues. "What's particularly interesting to me in these much longer sections is that they are mostly instrumental music. The instrumental music interprets the movement of messenger/angels going up, down, or pausing on a ladder (or ladders) between heaven and earth: a musical interpretation without words. "Traveler's Prayer was composed before and during the 2020 pandemic. "The virus shifted the gravity of the words I was setting... three short excerpts from Genesis, Exodus and Psalms, " Reich says. "These excerpts are usually added to the full Traveler's Prayer found in Hebrew prayer books, " he continues. "While these verses can certainly apply to travels by air, car, or boat, they can also be applied to travel from this world to the next. "The first melody is from Biblical Hebrew chant in America and parts of Europe while the second is a more ornate style from Italy... The third melody I composed since, outside of Yemen, there is no existing tradition for chanting Psalms. As to structure, there are extremely free canons throughout.

Nonesuch Records releases pianist and composer Brad Mehldau's Ride into the Sun-a songbook recordof music by the late singer, songwriter, and guitarist Elliott Smith. Featured musicians include singer/guitarist Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear); singer/mandolinist Chris Thile (Punch Brothers, NickelCreek); bassists Felix Moseholm (Brad Mehldau Trio) and John Davis; drummer Matt Chamberlain (FionaApple, Tori Amos, Randy Newman, etc.); and a chamber orchestra led by Dan Coleman. Ride into the Sun's ten Elliott Smith songs are complemented by four Mehldau compositions that he says are "inspired by, and reflect, Smith's oeuvre." Also included are interpretations of Big Star's "Thirteen," which Smith also covered, and "Sunday" by Nick Drake, who Mehldau says, "I look at in some ways assort of Smith's visionary godfather." Recalling how he first got to know Smith and his music, which has been a regular part of his repertoire for years, Mehldau said that after years living in New York, he moved to Los Angeles "and there was this wonderful scene of singer-songwriters that was congregating at a club called Largo. That included Elliott but it also included artists like Rufus Wainwright, Fiona Apple. And then other musicians who had been around for a while would come down every Friday night to sit in on a gig that was led by Jon Brion. I played behind Elliott on his own tunes with Jon. It felt to me like a kind of renaissance in songwriting that flourished for a number of years."
