Peter Garland is a composer, world traveler, musicologist, writer whose music is always informed by his well-traveled ear and strong sense of personal vision. (His music has appeared on five previous Cold Blue CDs.) After the Wars, a resonant, sometimes clangorous four-movement piano solo performed by new-music champion Sarah Cahill, displays a unique sense of grace and a sincerity of expression. Garland writes about the piece: “Each of the transparent and self-contained movements takes as inspiration a Chinese poem or Japanese haiku.... I explore the quality of resonance in the piano: not just the notes played on the keyboard, but the sense of echo and fade produced by a very deliberate use of pedaling, and the sustaining and release of piano keys after notes and chords are sounded. It creates a sense of timbral color and acoustic perspective (proximity and distance).... Each movement is like a single image, simply stated with relatively little temporal or thematic development—very much like the poems they are based on.” After the Wars is a 20-minute CD EP/single. MusicWeb Int’l wrote of it, “There is an interesting use of space and time in this work. On the surface, it’s quite simple, but the sounds develop over the span of the four movements as you slowly grow accustomed to the underlying structure…and after listening to this disc several times, I wanted to hear more.” Julien Cowley wrote in The Wire, “Pianistic shell bursts interspersed with wounded reflection …. Garland’s After The Wars… alternates ruggedness and delicacy, oppressive weight fringed with luminosity in a powerful evocation of desolation and scarred hope.” And Gapplegate Classical-Modern Review wrote, “Garland weaves a web of expressive, muted magic and we readily fall under its spell. Very recommended.”
Michael Byron’s music is one of contrasts, noted for its intertwining of minimalist and maximalist techniques and rigorous processes with freely composed music. It uniquely reconciles traditional notions of beauty with boisterous, almost-out-of-control instrumental writing. This CD features performances by some of today’s most-respected new-music champions, including pianists Sarah Cahill and Joseph Kubera, synthesizer player Kathleen Supové, and the FLUX Quartet. International Record Review, walking its readers through the album, track by track, wrote: “Continents of city and love is a moving and sensual piece—a sort of timeless, impersonal, chthonic lovesong.... Evaporated pleasure...is emphatic music, with a machine-like insistence; objective and impersonal, it is heir to the legacy of Conlon Nancarrow.... Even more arresting is Awakening at the inn of the birds...a glorious polyphonic cacophony.... As she sleeps...creates a still space enclosed by great tenderness and a wonderful meditative calm.... Tidal...is a many-layered sonority in which the near and the far gradually change places. The performances are as good as one would expect from so stellar a group of players.... another admirable release from Cold Blue.”
This exquisite, mobile-like, ever-focus-shifting music for three pianos is wonderfully performed by noted new-music champion Sarah Cahill. A 25-minute CD EP/Single. “If this is a long night, let it go on and on.” [Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago] “It’s a beautiful and original piece, with ‘family’ links to such composers as Harry Partch, Henry Cowell, Conlon Nancarrow, and John Cage, and with allusions to ‘nature’ and the ‘East’.” [Int'l Record Review] “A commanding presence in the landscape of American music.... his music is passionate, fiercely intelligent and one of a kind. Gann’s music embraces a broad range of influences but sounds like no other.” [John Luther Adams, NewMusicBox (American Music Center)] “Long Night was intended to evoke Martin Heidegger's phenomenology of mood swings. Three unsynchronized piano lines flow parallel through sections of indeterminate length, overlapping like ripples from raindrops splashing into a pond in slow motion…. Sarah Cahill plays all three parts on this economical CD single, heightening the music’s gentle equanimity.” [Steve Smith, Time Out New York] “Best Albums of 2005.... The composer-turned-critic dusts off a minimalist piano sketch from his apparently not-so-misspent youth.” [K. Leander Williams, Time Out New York]
Much of Arlene Sierra's compositional output centers on the natural world, addressing the subjects of landscape, evolutionary biology, and the sounds, processes and behavior of birds and insects. Arranged into three books, Sierra's Birds and Insects comprises 15 movements composed across a twenty-year period. The three books are performed brilliantly here by pianists Steven Beck (Books 1 and 2) and Sarah Cahill (Book 3). The album is the fourth in Bridge's ongoing Arlene Sierra series.
The Future is Female is a three volume series, which celebrates and highlights women composers from the 17th century to the present day. These recordings feature more than 70 compositions by women around the globe and includes many premiere recordings. Most pianists grow up with the classical canon, which has always excluded women composers as well as composers of color. It is still standard practice to perform recitals consisting entirely of music written by men. The Future is Female aims to be a corrective towards rebalancing the repertoire. It does not attempt to be exhaustive, in any way, and the three albums in this series represent only a small fraction of the music by women which is waiting to be performed. This first Vol., In Nature, will be followed later in 2022 by Vol. 2, At Play and Vol. 3, The Dance. American pianist Sarah Cahill, hailed as ‘a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde’ by The New York Times and ‘instrumental in bringing to life the music of many of our greatest living composers’ by Keyboard Magazine, has commissioned and premièred over 70 compositions for solo piano. She was named a 2018 Champion of New Music by the American Composers Forum.
