At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the eruption of Romanticism was not only a disruptive element which was capable of distorting the aesthetic and conceptual canons of the music of the time but it also brought about a series of noteworthy technical improvements in the organological sector. Without this change a number of instruments could not have expressed what was requested by composers and performers involved in this new cultural and artistic revolution - a revolution that, within a few decades, was able to build new cathedrals on the ruins of European Baroque. This record is a tribute to the extraordinary adventure of the flute through the nineteenth century, which is when this instrument increasingly assumed a stylistically independent connotation, which allowed it to become part of that group of musical instruments (such as the violin and the piano) which appealed to the cultured and well-off middle classes. This was in particular due to it's capacity to "challenge" the human voice, the lyrical singing, reviving, through transcription, the famous lyrical works, the arias, well known and loved by both the aristocratic class and the humblest people alike. The choice of these compositions, therefore, focuses on the "belcanto" repertoire revised in light of the potential of the transverse flute.

Accordionist Theo Ould describes this new album as "my most personal - I had never allowed myself to feature the music of Astor Piazzolla. I wanted to raise the accordion above the cliches to concentrate on more classical repertoire". Theo's vocation became evident, however, when he heard Piazzolla's Libertango at the age of 6. Now, 20 years later, this Frenchman from Marseille tackles this music with fervour and exaltation through tailor-made arrangements performed alongside the Bilitis quartet and the double bass player Blanche Stromboni, as well as mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, who appears in a beautiful and heart-warming rendition of Balada para un loco, Piazzolla's setting of a poem by Horacio Ferrer. Theo Ould is passionate about this music, inviting us to share in his enthusiasm by joining in Ferrer's Balada: "Climb up into my madman's tenderness, Put a wig of larks on your head, Fly with me now! Come! Fly! Come!"

Roberto Fabbriciani is an essential reference point for flutists and composers over the past decades. The list of renowned masters he has collaborated with is nothing short of impressive: Berio, Boulez, Bussotti, Cage, Carter, Castiglioni, Clementi, Dallapiccola, de Pablo, Donatoni, Ferneyhough, Gaslini, Huber, Krenek, Kurtag, Maderna, Messiaen, Morricone, Petrassi, Pousseur, Rihm, Rota, Sciarrino, Stockhausen, Takemitsu, Yun, and many others, to name only the historical figures! Fabbriciani has not only innovated flute technique but has also contributed to updating compositional strategies, as the instrument has consistently been placed at the service of composition. "The goal," Fabbriciani has stated, "is to bring art music to a wider audience. Technology has enabled a new leap forward, but composition doesn't arise from the availability of new tools, it emerges because innovative musical thinking requires these tools to express itself." This CD focuses on music dedicated to Fabbriciani (with the exception of Maderna's piece). Tackling such a diverse range of works by different composers is no small feat; it requires the ability to delve expressively into vastly different styles. Alongside technical skill, it demands a refined sensitivity. Fabbriciani excels not only in mastering the stylistic diversity of contemporary composers but also in interpreting the works of the past. Indeed, Fabbriciani is not merely the highly esteemed interpreter of contemporary music that we all recognize; he is also an outstanding performer of traditional repertoire, boasting an extensive discography that spans from Vivaldi to Bach, Respighi to Piazzolla, and beyond. The past nourishes the present, and the present holds the seeds of the future, as is evident in these recordings.
