Jazz Club Montmartre - CPH 1988 - First Set
Storyville Records
Available as
Vinyl
Storyville Records proudly presents the previously unreleased live double album, Michel Petrucciani Trio - Jazz Club Montmartre - CPH 1988, by the legendary French pianist Michel Petrucciani. Recorded during a memorable performance at Copenhagen's Jazzhus Montmartre on July 3rd, 1988, the album captures Petrucciani in the company of two jazz icons, Gary Peacock on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. While the trio only came together for a brief European tour in the summer of 1988, the chemistry they shared on stage was undeniable. The trio, propelled by a studio session the previous autumn, radiates synergy, as they explore six of Michel's original compositions with a sense of grace and spontaneity. On this recording, listeners will rediscover Petrucciani's unique lyrical universe, as well as his reverence for modern jazz icons, paying tribute to Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, and Paul Bley with special arrangements of classics like Someday My Prince Will Come, Mr. K.J. and Turnaround. From the explosive energy of She Did It Again to the introspective beauty of Autumn Leaves, Petrucciani's virtuosic playing reveals a rare sense of urgency, joy, and an unrelenting passion for life. As Gary Peacock and Roy Haynes were at the height of their careers-Haynes playing with Chick Corea and Peacock with Keith Jarrett-they were drawn to Petrucciani, recognizing the greatness of his artistry. Together, they formed a trio, bound by a shared intuition and respect for one another, and this performance at Montmartre is a testament to that fleeting moment of jazz brilliance. This concert took place at the midpoint of Petrucciani's meteoric career, 12 years after his Paris debut and 11 years before his untimely passing. Despite the physical challenges posed by glass bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta), Petrucciani's fierce determination, boundless love for music, and infectious laughter inspired all who knew him. Now, more than 35 years after that magical evening in Copenhagen, we invite listeners to close their eyes and step back in time. July 3rd, 1988.it could have been last night, or it could be tomorrow morning! A monument over one of the most creative and joyful pianists in jazz ever!

This is his third album, but he is only 23 years old. No question about it: Mathieu Clement, the drummer, composer and arranger from Luxembourg, goes his way unswervingly.Stylistically, the drummer also moves with this septet on a tried-and-tested basis. The watchword is "straight ahead." Clement is basically oriented toward the achievements of those jazz currents that developed in the mid-1950s and resulted in mainstream varieties.

There are good reasons why the names of all those involved in this album are listed as equal partners. "Moving Times" is the result of real teamwork and is the first production of a newly formed group in which everyone acts on an equal footing. This is not self-evident, because singer Esther Kaiser and guitarist Axel Fischbacher represent two established big names in the German jazz scene, who have been independently leading their own bands for many years and have released a large number of their own albums. The two belong to different generations while bassist Genevieve O'Driscoll and drummer/vibraphonist Michael Knippschild represent another one. That means three generations, two women and two men, and it fits as if there were nothing more normal in the world.

Since the time vibraphone was invented in 1921 (could be 1916) there has been an impressive and growing list of exceptional practitioners of this mallet instrument. And one of them is Tony Miceli whom Victor Schermer of All About Jazz describes as, “a vibraphonist of astonishing virtuosity, musical resilience, and inventiveness. His vibes playing is nothing short of phenomenal.”
Miceli performs and gives masterclasses in the US and abroad. This is Tony Miceli’s leader debut album on SteepleChase.

Embarking on an exhilarating journey into uncharted musical territories, pianist Bram de Looze assembles a quartet of extraordinary talent, featuring Joey Baron on drums, Thomas Morgan on double bass, and Hank Roberts on cello. This convergence of masterful musicians promises a transcendental exploration of sonic landscapes, where spontaneity, intuition, and boundless creativity intertwine. At Brussels Jazz Festival in Flagey, the four musicians proved to be world class storytellers through music. With unexpected twists and turns, they weaved an evocative narrative, always supporting the music, claiming the moment as a group without feeling the need to overpower each other. This magical performance was captured by VRT Radio Klara and, luckily, will be enjoyed for generations.

The carefully arranged connection between the international Arthur Possing Quartet from Luxembourg and Joel Rabesolo from Madagascar is a real stroke of luck, as the joint album Homes demonstrates. It is no coincidence that it almost overflows with captivating pieces and diverse music during approximately 70 minutes of playing time. Instead of a random of tracks, the combination of pieces is designed to create a concise whole. As a result, Homes becomes a real listening journey.

A delicate beginning and a deeply romantic start. The warm, concentrated sound of the opening captures us and takes us along into a multi-faceted, extraordinary debut album. "I might not be a virtuoso who has this broad base. But what really matters to me is something else. What appeals to me musically is not defined by virtuosity or technique. If something is extremely well done, if it is technically very good, I find it admirable. But I am touched when someone conveys honest emotions. These are often pieces that are not particularly complicated."

On April 24, 2025, Storyville Records release Peter Vuust Quartet's brand new album Homage, their seventh album, recorded in January 2024 at the legendary Nilento Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. This marks the quartet's first instrumental album in over two decades. The quartet features award-winning bassist, composer, and neuroscientist Peter Vuust, known for his unique ability to blend the complexity of jazz with a scientific understanding of music. In addition to his success as a musician, Vuust is widely recognized as a neuroscientist specializing in the impact of music on the brain. His creative vision and musical insight drive the quartet's sound and this new album. Joining Vuust are Swedish piano icon Lars Jansson, Danish top-streaming saxophonist Claus Waidtlow, and prolific drummer Morten Lund. The album is a heartfelt tribute to the power of music and the legendary figures who have shaped it's history. With a collection of new compositions by Vuust, Homage captures a dynamic interplay of rhythm, melody, and emotion. The recording session brought together four of Scandinavia's most celebrated jazz musicians in an intense yet joyful creative process, resulting in a collection of pieces that balance intricate musicianship with expressive depth. Beyond it's artistic excellence, Homage serves as a showcase for the exceptional talents of the quartet. Pianist Lars Jansson, a pivotal figure in Nordic jazz and a member of Peter Vuust Quartet since 1996, delivers performances that blend introspection with virtuosity. From the introspective piano openings on Homage to Keith and Monday to his brilliant virtuosity on more energetic tracks like Finca La Huerta and Oh, Jaco!, Jansson's playing is a cornerstone of this album. Saxophonist Claus Waidtlow, one of Europe's most accomplished tenor and soprano saxophonists, brings power and melodic sensitivity to the album. His recent success with widely streamed Danish jazz albums attests to his global reach and influence. Drummer Morten Lund, among the most versatile and sought-after percussionists of his generation, provides the rhythmic foundation that ties the album together, seamlessly transitioning between energetic grooves and delicate textures. The Homage recording session was marked by a unique synergy between the musicians, culminating in a deeply cohesive album that resonates with listeners on multiple levels. As Morten Lund remarked after hearing the final mix, "This is the best we've ever made, Peter." With Homage, Peter Vuust Quartet offers a vibrant and expansive musical statement-one that pays tribute to jazz legends while embracing forward-thinking composition and performance.

For All We Know is the pure document of a magical concert evening in the LOFT in Cologne: without cuts and without any subsequent embellishment.A piano trio that plays standards, including ubiquitous ones such as "Stella By Starlight" and "Body and Soul": a case of decent, basic jazz? By no means! "We're really creating weird stuff," pianist Thomas Ruckert said. Weird, because it is completely detached from the usual conventions of standard interpretation.

The magic of art needs a frame, a somewhat solid container to hold the freedom that can only be found once we integrate some form of structure. And that also holds in every other area of life. We all need a frame, a structure, a rhythm, or else, we fall apart. This human form needs the body, and yet it transcends the limitations of the body - through art.

Duke Jordan (1920 – 2006) was approached in NY by Marcel Romano, musical consultant of the French film Les Liaisons Dangereuse directed by Roger Vadim in 1959 to audition for the soundtracks. It laid down the groundwork for Jordan’s rise to the star composer status. All too famous “No Problem” is not included in this sketching but a few of the tunes we come to appreciate later are here in their prototypes. This recording made in a NY studio has never been heard (except maybe by Vadim). SteepleChase is proud to announce the world premier release of the album of cultural/historical significance.

Many of us old-timers remember George “Big G” Coleman in the late 50s and 60s performing with almost every single legendary name in that golden era of American jazz, a.o. Miles Davis. Coleman who turns 90 this year is still going strong and surrounds himself with the elite artists of younger generation including the leader of this album Brian Charette (Hammond-B3).
This album can be seen as the sequel to 2018’s “Groovin’ With Big G” (SCCD 31857) again with Charette in charge of keeping the music flowing.
“This is a mellow date, a blowing date to be sure but Charette’s B-3 rarely goes the funk route and is closer to Wild Bill Davis. Coleman’s tenor is as strong as ever and while not aggressive, it is still forceful.” (Papathomas on SCCD 31857)
In the Middle of Nothing - to Palle Mikkelborg

Storyville Records is proud to present Danish pianist and composer Carsten Dahl's new album, In the Middle of Nothing - to Palle Mikkelborg, on April 11, 2025. In the Middle of Nothing is a deeply personal tribute to one of Scandinavian jazz's most visionary figures. This recording is both a celebration and a meditation, honoring the legendary Palle Mikkelborg, trumpeter, composer, arranger, and spiritual guide to generations of jazz musicians. The album consists of 7 tracks, all arranged and composed by Carsten Dahl. Mikkelborg's influence spans decades, transcending borders and genres. His sound is otherworldly, his approach both intimate and expansive. He has spent a lifetime exploring the space between sound and silence - seeking, as Dahl describes, "the sublime sound of nothing in everything and the sound of everything in nothing." With In the Middle of Nothing, Carsten Dahl channels this philosophy into a deeply atmospheric and immersive listening experience. The album carries a special dimension, as Mikkelborg himself participates alongside his wife, the renowned harpist Helen Davies. Together, they join Carsten Dahl Ensemble in a sonic exploration where the boundaries between composition and improvisation dissolve, creating a musical universe that is at once ethereal and profoundly grounded. The album also features contributions from a slew of prominent names in Scandinavian jazz, including saxophonist Fredrik Lundin, bassist Nils Bo Davidsen, drummer Thomas Pasborg, a string sextet, and BBC Children's Choir. Palle Mikkelborg's trumpet playing is deeply rooted in both jazz tradition and Nordic storytelling, drawing as much from American pioneers like Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong as from the legacy of Carl Nielsen, H.C. Andersen, and Soren Kierkegaard. His music is elusive, poetic, and rich with mystery, never adhering strictly to genre but instead embracing time, space, and silence as integral elements of musical expression. Carsten Dahl, one of Denmark's most innovative and adventurous musicians, is known for his boundless imagination and fearless exploration of sound. With an unparalleled sense of improvisation, he bridges the worlds of jazz, classical, and avantgarde, constantly searching for new expressions and emotional depth. In the Middle of Nothing - to Palle Mikkelborg is a testament to the power of listening, of presence, and of music's ability to transcend the tangible world. It's an album for those who seek music that exists beyond boundaries, where jazz meets folklore, and where silence meets sound.

Storyville Records is pleased to announce the release of In Rome, a new album by Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbaek alongside esteemed jazz musicians, pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, drummer Roberto Gatto and singer Valentina Ranalli. This recording consists of 11 original compositions, 9 by Pieranunzi, 1 by Fonnesbaek and 1 by Gatto. Thomas Fonnesbaek is considered one of the most important and distinctive bassists on the European jazz scene today. His virtuosic technique, "Nordic sound" and ability to craft cohesive solos place him in the lineage of Danish bassists like Niels-Henning rsted Pedersen, Bo Stief and Jesper Lundgaard, while also showing kinship with greats like Dutch bassist Hein van de Geyn and prominent Swedish bass players. Nevertheless, Fonnesbaek's style is uniquely his own, honed through a self-taught journey that captivates audiences with a rare ability to evoke Duende - the inexplicable power of attraction that moves listeners emotionally, a concept coined by Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. For those who have had the privilege of experiencing Fonnesbaek live, they will recognize this Duende in his playing. He often takes risks that challenge both his fellow musicians and audiences, creating moments of magic. In Rome captures these moments, highlighting Fonnesbaek's collaboration with some of Europe's finest musicians. At the core of the album is the partnership between Fonnesbaek and Enrico Pieranunzi, one of Europe's most revered pianists. Pieranunzi, known for his collaborations with the likes of Chet Baker, Marc Johnson, Paul Motian, and the legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, brings his extensive jazz and classical music background to this recording. Having recorded numerous albums together, Pieranunzi and Fonnesbaek share a musical chemistry that fuels this project. Joining the trio is Roberto Gatto, a drummer celebrated in European jazz circles. His elegant, sensitive approach enhances the group's interplay, while Rosario Giuliani on saxophone and Valentina Ranalli on vocals further elevate the music. In Rome is a testament to the creativity and mastery of European jazz. This album is jazz at it's finest!

After two years of solo touring, Yaron Herman presents his new album Radio Paradise. He returns with an exceptional ensemble, joining forces with two of the finest saxophonists in the world: Maria Grand, a rising international star, and Alexandra Grimal, a major figure in improvised music. This album takes us on a quest for lyricism, depth and sincerity, with elegant melodies and powerful rhythms, in a project that is both spiritual and deeply moving. "When I started working on this album, the first thing that came to my mind was melody. I have been writing a lot over the last few years, mostly in my notebooks, for myself. On the road or at home, anything from long lines to short fragments. With time, (and hard work) these "motifs" started to take shape and turn into "songs". While playing them, exploring what they could become, I realized I was looking for a sound that wasn't "just the piano. These melodies required another voice. Saxophonists Maria Grand and Alexandra Grimal have different approaches, yet both have a mysterious, powerful and lyrical quality that I was looking for. Those qualities, combined with Haggai Cohen Milo's beautiful tone and rhythmic versatility and the playing and precious ideas throughout the Process of my longtime musical brother, Ziv Ravitz, made these songs truly come to life. In the studio we were fortunate to have the experience and perspective of producer Daniel Yvinec who encouraged us to push the music further, taking risks. I imagined each composition as a different scenario, a landscape offering a fertile ground from which improvisation could grow. Improvisation: a quest for the sweet spot between freedom and constraint. The playfulness of it all. Providing the tools but not the final edifice, providing the canvas but not dictating what to paint on it. That's how Radio Paradise happened. We stumbled upon the title in the studio, while discussing how opposites complete each other, and how our role as artists is to try and reconcile that which seems in opposition. To find the space where music flows effortlessly, and from the heart." YARON HERMAN
