The Gondoliers, the twelfth of fourteen operas from Gilbert & Sullivan, has been an audience favourite since it's 1889 premiere. The tunes are infectious, the romantic and family conflicts heartfelt, and the satire of rank and station constantly entertaining and relevant. Fushigi no Kuni: Translating to "Wonderland" in Japanese, this piece was inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. A Troubadour in the Moonlight: A composition and improvisation depicting a minstrel serenading a loved one beneath the moon. For Misato: A heartfelt dedication to Misato-san, my dear friend who departed too young. The five songs above are composed by Yukari. Eurus, Suibokuga, Pandora's Box, Don't Follow the Piper, and Au cr�puscule are collective improvisations. = "We can imagine some eyebrows being raised at the description of Dora Pejacevic as a contemporary of Brahms; the two composers were born more than fifty years apart, and their lives only overlapped by twelve years. Yet both works by Pejacevic are unmistakably from the same compositional lineage as that by Brahms; and both are works written early on in Pejacevic's remarkable (and, sadly, all-too-short) life. Both pieces belong clearly to the romantic tradition, displaying no hint of the more modernist directions which her later works would take. We were immediately intoxicated by the passionate sweep of Pejacevic's Piano Quartet, but also the tenderness of it's slow movement, and felt it would make the perfect bedfellow for the First Piano Quartet of Brahms, a piece to which Tom has felt particularly close since student days. Brahms's Piano Quartet is justly one of the best-loved of all chamber works, and few works are more exhilarating to perform: the first movement offers an abundance of glorious themes; the second takes us to a mysterious dreamworld; the third luxuriates in expansive lyricism; then the fiery virtuosity of the gypsy finale sends us headlong to the finish line. This album brings us to the end of our recorded journey through Brahms's three piano quartets, and it has been the greatest privilege and joy to record these works, alongside three major piano quartets by composers who deserve to be far better known. Benjamin Grosvenor - "Liszt" Hot on the heels of his 2020 Diapason d'Or and Gramophone Award triumphs, British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor presents his next album with Decca Classics. The album, Liszt, signifies Grosvenor's most substantial solo recording to date, centered around the works of the Romantic piano virtuoso and composer, Franz Liszt. The release marks Benjamin's sixth album on Decca Classics, following the award-winning Chopin Piano Concertos in 2020.

Rachmaninoff's output of chamber music is small but all the more precious for that. Two absolute gems bear witness to the fact: these ‘elegiac trios’, which were produced by a young composer still indisputably under the influence of Tchaikovsky. However, Rachmaninoff’s personality is already fully present, reaching heights of emotion and expressiveness.

The pieces by Suk and Grieg add a further touch of character to the picture, which is painted with an exceptionally rich palette: the artistry of the phenomenal Trio Wanderer.

The Beethoven concerto is a piece of overwhelming power," says violinist Vilde Frang. "It is somehow more than music - the dimension of it feels almost cosmic. The force of this concerto takes me by surprise, over and over again." Frang juxtaposes Beethoven's epic, lyrical work with Stravinsky's compact violin concerto, which pays spiky tribute to 18th century models. The conductor is Pekka Kuusisto, himself an adventurous violinist, in his role as Artistic Best Friend of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. "It was the chamber musical qualities of the Beethoven concerto that provided the key for me," says Frang. "The violin is constantly 'feeding' and playing around the orchestra... In it's own way, the Stravinsky too engages the soloist in a constant dialogue with the orchestra. With Pekka Kuusisto and the Bremen players, I really feel in such a comfort zone... There is a feeling of having everything to gain by gathering together, coming together.

(5-CD set) The Emerald Duets is a crowning achievement among Wadada Leo Smith's many recorded duo collaborations with drummers/percussionists that have previously featured such creative giants as Ed Blackwell, Jack DeJohnette, Milford Graves (TUM BOX 003), Louis Moholo-Moholo (TUM CD 029) and G�nter Sommer, among others. The Emerald Duets features four master drummers who have each, in their own unique fashion, contributed to the way modern drumming has developed in the past six decades and how it is now perceived. Pheeroan akLaff, Andrew Cyrille and Han Bennink are each featured on one disc and Jack DeJohnette on two discs, including Smith's five-part composition "Paradise: The Gardens and Fountains" that fills the fifth disc of this boxed set in it's entirety. The sessions with akLaff, Cyrille and DeJohnette mostly feature compositions by Wadada Leo Smith, including three very different versions of Smith's powerful statement for the protection of freedom and democracy, "The Patriot Act, Unconstitutional and a Force that Destroys Democracy." The session with Bennink includes a combination of Smith's compositions and collectively created tracks.

San Francisco Chronicle: Parisot, the brilliant Brazilian cellist, knew Villa-Lobos, and premiered several of his works. (Villa-Lobos' Second Cello Concerto is dedicated to Parisot.) Parisot has the advantage of a mass of cellos - 20 or so - all from the Yale Music department, and hence, his students. (The jacket lists 34 names.) And what a sound they make - organ-like in resonance and sensational in intonation. Add to this the fact that he has the dulcet voice of soprano Auger for the famous fifth Bachianas, plus Delos' brilliantly lively sonics, and you have a very major release. Highly recommended. Opus: This is a most unusual and enjoyable release. First of all, at long last, recordings of Villa-Lobos' Bachiana brasileiras Nos. 1 and 5 that really do justice to these irresistible scores. Here the works are played by the sort of ensemble Villa-Lobos had in mind: not the usual eight cellos, but an 'orchestra of violoncellos' - the Yale Cellos, twenty in member, conducted by their mentor Aldo Parisot. The gain in tonal richness is immeasurable. And what tremendous vigor and elan they display! I don't mean to imply any degree of roughness or vehemence, however, for this is some of the suavest playing imaginable by such an ensemble. Rather, the rhythms, inflections, and articulations are executed in such an inimitably idiomatic manner as to simply sweep the listener along. In the haunting Aria ('Cantilena') of No. 5, Arleen Auger enters as if another instrument, a soprano cello perhaps. As much as I enjoyed Hendricks' performance, Auger gives the most exquisite rendition I've heard since Bidu Sayao (who recorded only this movement). The aria's central section is treated more expansively than usual, but with a wonderfully apt sensitivity. Auger and the cellists deliver the concluding Dansa ('Martelo') brilliantly, not so fast as to turn it into a meaningless display piece, but at a tempo that allows the infectious dance rhythms to tell. WG, High Performance Review: This recording is an interesting novelty: an orchestra made up entirely of violoncelli! The Villa-Lobos works are placed first and last, in between are arrangements of various compositions by J.S. Bach, including the much arranged 'Chaconne in D-Minor' for solo violin. Aldo Parisot and his student cellists give wonderfully rich, vital and colorful performances. In the famous 'Bachiana Brasileiras No. 5,' we're fortunate to have Arleen Auger. Everything this splendid American soprano does is touched with her intelligence and the beauty of her voice. The Bach pieces are all well-played, and the sound of massed 'celli, at least under Parisot's direction, is not at all as dark, opaque or lush as one might expect. There's light, almost transparent, yet rich, sound, and throughout the compact disc, it is music that's given to us, not a slick demonstration of novel sound.
