The Alpbarock group comprises 6 musicians from various backgrounds, who came together to bring new life to old melodies from the Swiss popular repertoire. The surprising program of this recording revives ballads, love songs or death dances hailing from non-written traditions. The result offers a refreshing new view of the concept of popular music. The recording was made at the Swiss National Museum, which conserves chamber organs formerly used in the wealthy farms of Toggenburg and Emmenthal between 1750 and 1850.

415 or 440? Period or modern instruments? Here, we will hear a 'modern' violin and organ, at a pitch of 440 therefore, illustrating with virtuoso fingers a fertile page of the rediscovery of Bach at the beginning of the twentieth century. Concertos and cantata sinfonias transcribed by Marcel Dupré (and reputed to be 'unplayable' because of their difficulty), sonatas and partitas for violin interpreted in the spirit preceding the baroque revival.

Eric Lesage continues the flamboyant exploration of Robert Schumann's solo piano repertoire, all of them cornerstones of 19th century musical history. This momentous endeavour receives more and more critical acclaim and is recorded in optimal conditions (the outstanding acoustics of La Chaux-de-Fonds and brilliant sound by Jean-Marc Laisné). The complete recording of these works will come to an end by 2010 (the anniversary of Schumann's birth) and so crown its festivities.

We know very little about Ruiz Samaniego, Kapellmeister in Saragossa during the second half of the 18th century. However, he left an abundant music production, including some villancicos. These polyphonic vocal works of theatrical origin have been adopted by the Church to celebrate their main feasts. Sung in Spanish, not in Latin, they are built on a religious thematic, mostly in the form of dialogues and they frequently use musical elements of popular origin. Very little explored, the Spanish Baroque vocal music is a world of many rich artistic treasures that cry to be rediscovered. The villancicos of Ruiz Samaniego are undoubtedly part of these treasures, as witnesses of an artistic universe specific to Spain, in which spirituality and sensuality are irremediably fused.

Bach, apart from being one of the greatest composers, performers, and improvisers of his age, was also one of the greatest students in the history of music. He was as precocious a learner as any musician, taking in everything he could from the various Quellen , or sources, available to him in his day, assimilating as many different styles from every major European nation as possible, without ever traveling outside of his own. That a recital of this nature is not only achievable—one that is capable of demonstrating many of these various sources—but engrossing as well, is proof of the diversity of styles that all had their effect on Bach. It is a testament to his abilities as well, that as much as we can hear these influences in his early works, there is still a voice that shines through.


From the opening of the Reincken toccata, Céline Frisch makes it clear that we are in for a well-paced and dramatic reading. The toccata opens in a boisterous manner, full of energy, but free enough to suggest there is still a hint of improvisation. Frisch obviously enjoys the moment, and as a consequence, so do we! The recital continues with the E-Minor Toccata by Bach, highlighting the similarities and differences between the former piece and itself. She continues in her free way with the tempo of the opening, but sets a clear tempo for the fugue that follows, always maintaining a sprightly sense of articulation, lightening the mood when necessary. The Buxtehude and Froberger that follow show yet another influence, mainly those of the suites that preceded Bach’s own. Here Frisch creates a slightly more reverent feeling with slower tempi, perhaps a bit too slow in the allemandes and sarabandes for my taste, but not overly so as to distract from their dance-like nature. The courantes and gigues, on the other hand, have well-chosen tempos, not too fast, but lively and exciting. The Capriccio follows, in what is probably one of the better performances on harpsichord that I’ve come across. The tempi here are equally well chosen, in particular the “Lament” in passacaglia form, which is too often played as slowly as possible. Frisch here maintains a good sense of line and movement. The Kerll pieces that follow come as the biggest delight, with the passacaglia leading that list. It is here Frisch slows off her skills in what is surely a Baroque virtuosic tour de force. Exciting from beginning to end, it makes me wish the piece were twice as long as it is! The recital ends with Bach’s G-Minor Toccata, equally compelling, and ending in the home key of G Major, in which the recital began over an hour before.


This recital is a joy to listen to, from beginning to end, a well-paced, solid reading of some fascinating music that puts Bach fully in perspective. It’s ne of the best harpsichord discs I’ve come across this year, complete with stylish playing, good flair for the dramatic, and an equally interesting program to boot. Highly Recommended.

This ultimate recording of the complete works for and with the piano by Schumann, the pure Saxon of the East, ends by the alpha and omega of his pianistic creation, such as glimpsed and heard in the West, in Rhineland. It thus opens on the Rhine, in Mannheim, with the charming Variations on the name 'Abegg" of 1830 and closes in Düsseldorf with the mysterious variations, called Geistervariationen, composed and copied out in February 1854, just before and right after his attempted suicide in the Rhine, leading to his permanent internment in Endenich (Bonn), facing the sacred river of the Germans...

Served by very high level interpreters, the fourth volume in this series underlines and strengthens the public's growing interest in this previously unpublished repertoire. Fondation Bru plans to organize an international symposium in Venice about this unjustly forgotten composer. This new volume reveals a Lucien Durosoir somewhere between impressionism and modernism, confirming the genius of his very atypical language. Luis de Briceño’s arrival in France was marked by a wave of enthusiasm. The Spaniard was at the heart of a polemic that questioned the supremacy of the lute, an instrument cherished by French music lovers at the beginning of the 17th century. Our rekindled interest lies not in this controversy, but in the beauty of Briceño’s compositions and the freedom they offer the musicians who play them. On this album, we discover Le Poème Harmonique in a repertoire bearing the marked touch of popular Spanish music, accompanied by the delightful song of Isabelle Druet and Claire Lefilliâtre.

The event known as 'Les grandes eaux Musicales de Versailles 2012', when all the fountains are working, accompanied by music, is presented by the Palace of Versailles in collaboration with Alpha. The Ostinato literally went through ages... It's a musical process founded on the repetition of a rhythmic, or melodic, or harmonic formula. It's the 'weft' of passacaglias, ciacconas... and of very popular works such as Ravel's Boléro, or Pachelbel's Canon. This process also inspired a lot of pop musicians, or minimalist American composers. Vincent Dumestre chose this way to propose, as much to 'fans' as to the general public, a thematic route within the best Poème Harmonique's recordings. It's at the same time a sort of Poème Harmonique's portrait, proposed at a very attractive price...

Four musicians among the most talented of their generation join forces to play unknown manuscripts containing unpublished sonatas by Young, Abell and anonymous composers-all this plus the complicity of Thomas Dunford and Jerome van Waerbeke.

This project comes into the category of a 'reconstruction', inspired by studying Dalmatian, Gregorian, and Glagolitic sources. This repertory, sung in the local vernacular though it belonged to the Roman rite, was preserved in manuscripts written in the Glagolitic alphabet used in medieval Croatia.
