Music from roughly 1600 to 1750, the era of Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Monteverdi. It is the period that gave us opera, the concerto and the fugue, built on a continuous bass line with harmony filled in above it. Performances often use period instruments, which give the music a lighter, more transparent sound than a modern orchestra.
