"Coltrane" is the John Coltrane's debut album as a leader, meaning this is the first time he was the primary artist, leading the session occurred just after his period with Miles Davis. Earlier in 1957, Coltrane had been fired by Davis (in April) over drug-related problems, then spent time in Philadelphia dealing with those issues. Musically, though his mature, iconic style was still developing, you can see him stretching: a real work with complex standards and original compositions, experimenting with phrasing and the form. Released in October 1957 (recorded May 31, 1957 at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey) the album didn't make a major splash on release, Coltrane was still mostly known as Miles Davis's sideman and briefly as a member of Thelonious Monk's quartet. Prestige Records wasn't promoting him heavily; they were more focused on Miles, Rollins, and others. But what critics called "first glimpse" of Coltrane will be in future an important record valued as the document of his emerging sound, especially his work with harmony, phrasing, and that "sheets of sound" style that he'd refine later. Three CD collection focussing on the spiritual explorations of the two greatest melodic creators on the planet. John Coltrane played tenor on Miles Davis' monumental 'Kind of Blue', an album that was a template for the style of modal improvisation to which he would devote himself in the fertile early 60s. A period which would culminate in his career masterpiece 'A Love Supreme'. The modal approach freed Coltrane to improvise with limitless invention on a sensual carpet of sound and bore immediate (if highly controversial) fruit with 'My Favorite Things', his expansive meditation on the popular song from 'The Sound of Music'. But success in itself did not satisfy Coltrane. He had encountered the music of Ravi Shankar and became entranced by it's serenity; a quality he longed to find in his own work. Eventually the two men met and liked each other enormously. Ravi saw much of himself in Coltrane; he admired that the saxophonist had overcome heroin addition, become a vegetarian, taken to reading Ramakrishna, and had committed himself to a rigorous regime of practice and study. They discussed Indian classical music and the possibility of recording an album together but their plans came to nothing as Coltrane tragically succumbed to liver cancer shortly before they were due to meet again.
The first album to hit the shelves after Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz was recorded in November and December 1959, although one of the eight tracks ("Villiage Blues") was recorded in late 1960. On everything save the aforementioned "Village Blues," Coltrane used the Miles Davis rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb.
Africa/Brass was John Coltrane's first album with a big band. The unique instrumentation included four French Horns, tuba, two euphoniums, two trumpets, three reed players, and a rhythm section including two bassists. The year 1958 represented a transitional period in John Coltrane's musical career. He had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. In the intervening years, he overcame his narcotics addiction and began to expand on his own musical ideas while experimenting with both the Thelonious Monk Quartet and the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley). He also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos - enabling the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style using melodic phrasing that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed 'sheets of sound.' The Giant Steps chord progression consists of a distinctive set of chords that create key centers a major third apart. Jazz musicians ever since have used it as a practice piece, it's difficult chord changes presenting a 'kind of ultimate harmonic challenge', and serving as a gateway into modern jazz improvisation. Several pieces on this album went on to become jazz standards, most prominently 'Naima' and 'Giant Steps.' The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of it's suggested 'Core Collection' calling it 'Trane's first genuinely iconic record.' Recorded in NYC in 1958 and originally released in 1959 as The Cecil Taylor Quintet - Hard Driving Jazz this is in fact the only existing document of the meeting between John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor. Even if caught at an early stage in their career the two masters show great personality and deep respect for each other while trumpeter Kenny Dorham sticks more to his familiar bop idiom. Cordially backed up by Chuck Israel on bass and Louis Hayes, Coltrane swings madly on Taylor's dissonant comping producing a rare, fascinating friction between two worlds. A must for every Coltrane maniac out there.
A trombone solo album is not exactly an everyday commodity, because the instrument is considered somewhat bulky, unwieldy and grumpy. In the hand of a master like Ray Anderson, however, one wonders how these prejudices could have come about, because he simply makes music with the trombone. "I've had this idea in my head since I started playing solo concerts in 1982," Ray Anderson recalled. "Anthony Braxton recorded the solo record ‘For Alto’ in 1969, where the challenge of playing an instrument alone without accompaniment is particularly interesting. So why not on the trombone too? Albert Mangelsdorff has recorded beautiful solo albums, and that by George Lewis is also very inspiring.”
