Giya Kancheli's cult reputation as one of the most profound musical voices of our time has not always been matched by the availability of his music on record. These world premiere recordings of works written (or recomposed and arranged) between 2016 and 2018 are thus a significant contribution to the Kancheli discography. They find the composer at his most charming and epigrammatic in a series of 25 musical 'letters' for violin and string orchestra. Most of them are under three minutes in length, taking their material from themes written by the Georgian composer for the film scores which he has composed throughout his career. Compared to his more celebrated concert works such as the symphonies and cantatas of often starkly imposing and monumental expression, these letters strike a more whimsical, often wistful tone. The subjects - to whom they are addressed - are mostly actors and directors who have worked on the films scored by Kancheli. But there are also pieces written with palpable affection to performers such as the composer Jansug Kakhidze, who have championed his music over the years, to fellow composers such as Bidzina Kvernadze, and to artistic friends such as the writer, puppeteer and painter Revaz Gabriadze. The project was initiated by the violinist Andrea Cortesi, who had asked for a piece for violin and string orchestra. Kancheli returned to a cycle of 18 miniatures he had written for violin and piano with Cortesi in mind, and then further back to a collection of 33 piano-only miniatures. Kancheli explains this in a booklet introduction, complemented by a fuller essay from Cortesi, making this album an authoritative recording of Kancheli at his most appealing - perhaps the ideal introduction to his unique voice.

Mariss Jansons was one of the most important conductors of our time, celebrated worldwide and held in the highest regard – all the more so since his unexpected death on December 1, 2019. "Mariss Jansons - The Edition," comprising 70 recordings and a box set in representative LP format, documents the final phase of his life and career: his work as chief conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Bavarian Radio Chorus between 2003 and 2019. Predominantly live recordings from Munich, Tokyo, Vienna, New York, Waldsassen, and the Vatican enable listeners to experience for themselves musical highlights that are as moving as they are exciting. The set contains a remarkably diverse repertoire, ranging from symphonic music and great choral works to opera, and from the First Viennese School to 20th century classical music. "Mariss Jansons - The Edition" contains works by a broad range of composers, including complete cycles of the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler respectively. It is supplemented by fascinating rehearsal recordings that bear witness to Jansons's trusting artistic collaboration with the musicians in his orchestra, together with a large-format, approximately 72-page-long booklet containing background information, essays, an interview, and a detailed track listing.

Giya Kancheli is one of the few Georgian composers whose works are well known beyond the borders of his homeland. On her album “Poetry of Silence” the pianist Ketevan Sepashvili, also from Georgia, presents Kancheli's 33 Miniatures for Piano. The short pieces are all based on works for film or theater, which were his main areas of activity over a long period of time, and represent a broad cross-section of Kancheli's creativity from almost four decades. Four of the miniatures can be heard with additional flute, and the Twelve Miniatures for Voice and Piano were also arranged by the pianist for the trio cast, which introduces an additional tone color particularly well suited to the songs. Sepashvili is supported by her compatriots Temo Kharshiladze, flute and Madina Karbeli, soprano.

In the late 1960s, the composer Michael Nyman coined the term "minimalism" to describe a new musical aesthetic characterized by a certain simplicity and economy of means. One of the composers associated with this movement, La Monte Young, embraced the term with enthusiasm, while others like Steve Reich and Philip Glass nuanced it with terms such as "music without intention" or "music with a repetitive structure". The term "hypnotic music" might also be appropriate for some works by Simeon ten Holt or Arvo Part, provided we are attuned to the monotonous hum of rain, have a fondness for grey-the languid greys of overcast days-or appreciate a certain suspension of the world. Considered to be the most gifted and promising pianist of his generation in Poland, Szymon Nehring is the only Pole to have won first prize at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv (2017). He was also a finalist at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw with only 19 years of age. Szymon Nehring performes with orchestras such as Sinfonia Varsovia, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, Hamburger Symphoniker, Orchester philharmonique de Marseille and Orchestre Paseloup in France and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, collaborating with conductors such as John Axelrod, Lukas Borowicz, Sylvain Cambreling, Karina Canellakis, Pablo Heras-Casado, Marzena Diakun, Lawrence Foster, Giancarlo Guerrero, Jacek Kaspszyk, Grzegorz Nowak, Pawel Przytocki, George Tchitchinadze, David Zinman and Omer Meir Wellber. He also performed and recorded with the late Krzysztof Penderecki, among other works Mr. Penderecki´s piano concerto.

Georgian pianist Misho Kandashvili strikes with his combination of delicacy and strength, breathtaking technique and musical sensitivity. Born in 1993 in Tbilisi, he began playing piano at age seven and entered the Tbilisi Art School Anastasia Virsaladze, in the class of Irina Boterashvili. Already as a child, he developed a great interest for Bach’s music, that helped him improve over the years a very high quality and intelligence in his playing. In 2002, he was the winner of the Contest of Georgia, as well as of numerous national competitions. He performed the Bach concerto No. 3 in 2003, which was the first performance ever of this piece in Georgia. That same year, Mikheil participated in the Georgian-German Young Artists' Festival "Tbilisi 2003" in Tbilisi, and in Schwaigern, Germany, in 2004. On the present release he performs a program of works by Georgian and Russian composers.

Nino Gvetadze: Some music stays with you for a lifetime not just in your memory, but in your hands, your ears, your way of feeling the world. For me, that music began in Tbilisi, Georgia, where I was born and raised, and where these sounds first took root. Recording this album felt less like performing and more like remembering. The music flowed naturally, as if something long held inside was finally f inding it's voice. It felt like writing a diary in sound one filled with affection, gratitude and quiet moments of awe. Melodies are warm, wit, poetic and melancholic.

Giya Kancheli, one of Georgia's most eminent composers, became increasingly famous after the advent of glasnost in the Soviet Union, when his works, not least his seven symphonies, were heard internationally. Around the year 2000 Kancheli shifted away from the opulence of these pieces and moved towards a more restrained, introspective vein, which is exemplified by the three works on this album. Elements of folk and traditional music can be glimpsed in the abstract Ex contrario, while Middelheim is striking for it's overlapping succession of episodes. Tsutisopeli was Kancheli's final score.

This album offers delightful chamber music of Giya Kancheli, regarded as one of Georgia’s greatest composers. The 18 Miniatures for violin and piano draw from music Kancheli wrote for plays and films. As he explains, he chose “the themes I especially cherish” for this set. His trio, Middelheim, is dedicated to the doctors of the Middelheim Hospital in Antwerp, where Kancheli received a dramatic resuscitation in the winter of 2016. About the Miniatures, Kancheli said, “While dedicating myself to symphonic and chamber music, I simultaneously wrote music for the stage and screen. No wonder, then, that certain themes originally intended for plays and films made their way into my larger works. ”Piet Koornhof has recorded many albums for Delos, including Violin Plus One and Frolov & Friends, both with pianist Albie Van Schalkwyk, who also performs with Koornhof on this album. They are joined by cellist Susan Mouton for the mesmerizing Trio, Middelheim. Together, these works take the listener on a fascinating journey.

    REVIEW:

These are late works, and both are worthy of attention. …there will be listeners who buy this CD and listen to the 18 Miniatures with a rapt expression on their face… These performances, by three South African musicians recorded in that country, seem very good… Middelheim, like many of Kancheli’s works, challenges performers to keep the music moving forward even when the tempo is close to glacial, and Koornhof, Mouton, and van Schalkwyk surmount that challenge. The engineering is excellent, and the booklet note by Sandro Kancheli, the composer’s son, complements the music well.

Shorena Tsintsabadze: For me, there is no more beautiful place in the world than Georgia. Everything in it is beautiful and unique. I owe the development of my personality and character to my roots, my family and my motherland, which I am always proud of. With this project, I would like to present the music of Georgian composers from different eras, from the 19th century to the present, in order to give an impression of how the compositional traditions changed and how Georgian classical music developed. Despite the extraordinary musicality of our people, cultural traditions, folklore and Orthodox singing date back to the 4th century BC. Classical music emerged quite late (the first opera and ballet theatre in Georgia was founded in 1851 and the first opera "?" - "Twilight" was not written until 1923 by Zakhari Paliashvili). The reason for such a late development of classical music is the constant struggle for survival and the endless wars from all sides. Georgia is a state with more than 3,000 years of history and during this time there has not been a single generation, including myself and the younger ones, that has not experienced the horrors of war. Despite all this, we not only survived the fighting, but also preserved our culture, the Georgian language and script. Today, when Georgia has received the status of a candidate country and we have never been so close to Europe, the fate of my country is once again in danger. We are forced to fight for our rights and defend the constitution of our country, which is attacked from time to time by certain forces both inside and outside the country's borders. I really hope and want to believe that we will defend the interests of our country and give it the opportunity to continue on it's path towards European integration in order to become a worthy member of the EU family. I think that this album is relevant in the context of recent events and trends in the world. I believe that more people want to get to know our culture, art and music, which my album will definitely contribute to.
