Horace Parlan

Performer

1931–2017. American pianist in the Hard Bop tradition.

Horace Parlan was a distinctive hard bop pianist known for his adaptively idiosyncratic technique due to childhood polio affecting his right hand. Associated with figures like Dexter Gordon and NHØP in his later European period.

Horace Parlan’s Glad I Found You is his second quintet date for SteepleChase which captures a rare meeting of inspired musicians at a peak moment, recorded in Copenhagen with Thad Jones — making a vibrant late career comeback — and the always inventive Eddie Harris. Parlan leads the quintet full of warmth, swing and spontaneous interplay. The album blends Parlan’s own tunes, soulful obscurities, and modern jazz classics like “Afternoon in Paris,” all delivered with the rhythmic looseness and deep blues feeling that defined his style. This new 24bit/96kHz remaster brings fresh clarity to one of Parlan’s most spirited SteepleChase sessions, revealing the nuance and energy of a group of masters enjoying every moment together. “...it’s another fine addition to Parlan’s discography.” (Jazz Journal)

Celebrating its legacy from the 1976 LP and 1990 CD release, Stable Mable returns in May 2026 as a newly remastered 180g audiophile edition (G1040). Captured in Copenhagen just weeks after Dexter Gordon’s ambitious orchestral project SCCD 31030 More Than You Know, this session strips the setting back to its purest form: a no frills blowing date where Gordon’s imagination, authority, and melodic wit shine without disguise. Joined by Horace Parlan, Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Tony Inzalaco, Gordon navigates standards like Just Friends, Misty, Red Cross, and So What with a mix of relaxed confidence and fiery invention. His soprano reading of In a Sentimental Mood adds a rare, reflective touch. Remastered from the original tapes, this edition highlights the quartet’s clarity, swing, and interplay—an essential snapshot of Gordon’s Copenhagen years and a definitive statement of his enduring mastery. “...Dexter plays brilliantly on every track ...beautifully recorded..”(Jazz Journal 1976)

In a concert given in Zurich in 1991, when it was then rare for Shepp to adopt the alto saxophone of his debuting years, this album offers a fine example of their repertory : a series of perfectly formed pieces, played with both the depth of experience and lucid distance. Going to the heart of the matter, the two musicians enable us to discover the very essence of jazz and Afro-American music in it's full glory.

Three years after the sensational spiritual recording by this duo “Goin’ Home” (SCCD 31079) producer Nils Winther had Archie and Horace in the studio again. The theme this time was traditional blues. Once again the Shepp-Parlan duo made one of the best selling SteepleChase releases. England’s Gramophone magazine called the duo “a powerful and ultimately inspirational collaboration”. This recording was awarded the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis for Modern Jazz Und Jazz-Rock of 1982 by the prestigious Deutsche Phono Akademie.

When the album by this unlikely duet of Shepp and Parlan playing hymns and spirituals came out in 1978 for the first time, it was an instant success and has become a classic since then. It is a success of unique theme (by the producer Nils Winther) and of sheer strength of musical material and of performance executed with grace and sensitivity. “...an overwhelming and emotional listening experience.” (Atlanta Journal Weekend)

This is Horace Parlan’s second quintet date (the first one “Frank-ly Speaking” SCCD 31076 recorded in New York) and this time recording took place in Copenhagen with fellow expatriate Thad Jones on flugelhorn and visiting tenorman Eddie Harris on the front line. This session incidentally marks Thad Jones’ come-back as an instrumentalist after a break enforced on by an accident. “...it’s another fine addition to Parlan’s discography.” (Jazz Journal)

A European tour with Miriam Makeba in 1970 had brought Parlan to Copenhagen, where four off-days gave him time to look around the city. He liked what he saw and two years later he settled down in Copenhagen. Horace Parlan enjoys playing solo piano – but haven’t had the chance to do it all that often. Parlan’s aim in making this CD was to give highly personal interpretations of compositions which he has cherished over the years but which have not been over-recorded. He says: "I am not a Tatum – I have to make the material fit my particular style and I spent quite a bit of time working on the arrangement. I wanted to do a reflective CD – no racehorse tempos, no pyrotechnics – and also make the harmonic structures as interesting as possible."
