Aaron Copland's third symphony is a vast and beautiful work depicting sprawling landscapes, forceful intensity and the power of human resilience. Composed in the final days of World War II, it channels the spirit of a nation looking toward brighter horizons. The final movement features the composer's inspirational Fanfare for the Common Man, culminating in a triumphant finale of hope for the future. George Walker's Sinfonia No.5 "Visions" was the composer's final work and stands as a protest against racial violence. Written as a tribute to the victims of the 2015 Charleston church shooting, this unrelentingly modernist piece is suffused with anger. Despite it's restless energy and jagged harmonies, the music encourages reflection and captures Walker's richly communicative musical language and groundbreaking legacy. Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra bring two American masterworks to life in this new recording from LSO Live. Pappano brings out the rich colors and emotional depths of Copland's Symphony No.3 and Walker's Sinfonia No.5, celebrating the indomitable spirit of the music and the enduring legacy of these pivotal composers.

Marin Alsop leads the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a new recording of Bernstein's riotous satirical operetta, Candide. Made almost three decades after the composer's own iconic recording with the Orchestra, Alsop's new version was captured during celebratory concerts marking Bernstein's centenary year, and features an outstanding array of soloists, including Leonardo Capalbo (Candide), Jane Archibald (Cun gonde), Anne Sofie von Otter (The Old Lady) and Sir Thomas Allen (Dr Pangloss, Narrator). With lyrical contributions from acerbic writers Richard Wilbur, Dorothy Parker and a young Stephen Sondheim, Candide marries raucous humor with the extraordinary genius of Leonard Bernstein. Includes 5.1 Multi-Channel.

The London Symphony Orchestra's string sound is world renowned. This recording marks the LSO Live debut of the LSO String Ensemble, directed by the orchestra's leader Roman Simovic. The Serenade is one of Tchaikovsky's most enduringly popular works. Inspired in part by Mozart, it's elegant music blends Russian folk-song with traditional classical forms. The recording's pairing is Bartok's Divertimento, a highly original work in it's own unique idiom, contrasting two buoyant and lighthearted movements with a somber Adagio.

With this eagerly awaited recording of Symphonies Nos.2 & 3, Sir Colin Davis completes his enlightening Nielsen symphony cycle. The first title in the series, Symphonies Nos.4 & 5, was Editor's Choice in Gramophone and Orchestral Choice of the Month in BBC Music Magazine. The second, with Symphonies Nos.1 & 6 was awarded CD of the Week in the Sunday Times. Nielsen's second symphony was inspired by a naive but vivid painting representing the four temperaments of the human personality. Adopting these defining characters for each of the symphony's movements Nielsen realized a sonic depiction of emotion. His third symphony, the most openly Danish of his symphonies, portrays spaciousness, power and vitality and is considered his greatest international achievement.

The evocative music of Claude Debussy has been described as the foundation of modern music. But how did the composer come to develop his unique style? On this video, maestro Francois-Xavier Roth and the London Symphony Orchestra present the UK premiere of a previously lost work by the young Debussy, alongside some of his earliest inspirations. Debussy's newly discovered Premiere Suite gives a rare insight into the mind of a young composer on the cusp of innovation. It's a work filled with Romantic and Eastern influences and glimpses of the unexpected harmonies that came to define Debussy's work. Paired alongside the composer's role models - from Wagner's powerful intertwining motifs, the abundant Spanish influences in Lalo's rarely-heard Cello Concerto performed here by Edgar Moreau, and Massenet's majestic Le Cid - Francois-Xavier Roth gives a fresh perspective on the much-loved composer.
