The score for Kon-Tiki was written by Swedish film composer Johan Söderqvist, who is amongst the most renowned film composers in the Scandinavian region.

Born in 1966 in Täby outside the capital, Söderqvist studied composition and arranging at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He wrote his debut film score in 1991 (Agnes Cecilia), and the same year wrote his first score for Danish director Susanne Bier (Freud Leaving Home). The soundtrack CD featuring both scores earned a Swedish Grammy for the composer. Bier remains a valuable colleague for Söderqvist, who has written the scores for most of her films, including Brothers (which won him the UCMF Film Music Award at the Cannes Film Festival), along with the Academy Award® nominated After the Wedding and In a Better World, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film in 2011.

Söderqvist’s signature scores also include the acclaimed 2008 vampire thriller Let the Right One In by director Tomas Alfredson, for which So?derqvist was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Score and won the Bernard Hermann Award, and Effi Briest, the touching 2009 adaptation of Theodor Fontane’s popular novel.

Whilst writing the score for Kon-Tiki, Söderqvist worked primarily with Tormod Ringnes, one of Norway’s most prominent sound designers, with whom he had collaborated on Together (2009) and King of Devil’s Island (2010), along with Patrik Andre?n (Söderqvist’s assistant). The team worked together to create a soundtrack, a combination of music and sound effects that function as an emotional unit, with the aim of the audience not knowing where one starts and the other ends. Using Skype for daily discussions, they collaborated on cues and sound design concepts before Ringnes would show the sketches to the two directors in Oslo, Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg. Andre?n also provided additional music for the process.

A trademark of Söderqvist’s scores, Kon-Tiki is characterised by a unique atmosphere based on many exotic and unusual instruments recorded especially for this score.

“The first thing that came to my mind” says Söderqvist, “was the sound of the conch horn for Tiki, the God of the Sun in ancient Polynesian mythology. Tiki is omnipresent in the score; even the opening that still plays in Norway has a foreboding episode with the conch horn playing over the frozen lake. I looked high and low for a conch horn soloist, looking up websites in Polynesia and France, then I happened to find the best soloist right here in Stockholm! His name is Tommy Adolfsson. We scheduled a recording session where Tommy brought in his conch horns of all sizes. We mostly made use of the smaller and medium conch horns and found a way to play the instrument with much more air, a more ‘leaking’ sound a bit similar to the Armenian instrument called ‘Duduk’. In the end I think we found a very significant sound with an ‘ancient’ quality to it.”

There were also two major pre-recording sessions of percussion with three players playing on the largest drums they could find. This material was used to create initial sketches to find the tone of the film score.

“You never know if a recording is going to stand all the way to the final mix but in this case, both the conch and the drums helped us to set the tone of the film. When some of the first sketches were made, I sent them confidentially to Tormod and asked him not to show anything to the directors just yet, all I wanted was a little check through his fine ears... Apparently Tormod didn’t follow my orders and showed the sketches to the filmmakers who luckily loved the half-finished work. We had a direction and everyone was happy. The track on the album called ‘Tiki’ is an early recording of the conch horn, and to conclude the project it is also the last thing you hear on the album.”

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of THE CHAMBER (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring the music by James Dean Bradfield. The Chamber is a claustrophobic survival thriller set beneath the Yellow Sea where the pilot of a small submersible craft and a three-man Special Ops team become trapped underwater in a fight for survival. A haunting, atmospheric score by James Dean Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers (in his first work for film) adds to the claustrophobic tension of this taut survival thriller. “The sound design and soundtrack needed to be intertwined to create almost it’s own character in that small, claustrophobic space. James’ work on the film is not only able to stand on its own, as a beautifully atmospheric music score, it is a vital part of creating the mood of each scene… something that, as a filmmaker, is an asset in telling the story in the way I wanted it to come across.”, comments writer and director Ben Parker.

It’s been a diverse experience for me musically, made me a more complete musician, and focused my skills completely.” ( Stanley Clarke)

This album is a retrospective that is a must-have for all lovers of musical theater. Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt first won fame as the creators of The Fantasticks- the longest-running musical in the history of the world, with more than 21,000 performances given in New York over a period of 58 years. But the Jones & Schmidt musicals also include Broadway classics such as "I Do! I Do!," "110 in the Shade," and "Celebration." Selections from these and 12 other shows are included in this deluxe release, which features many previously unreleased "demos" by the songwriters themselves. Jones & Schmidt worked closely with Producer Bill Rudman for over two years to ensure that this album would best represent their legacy. "The purpose of theater is always to reveal us to ourselves. To help us perceive the 'poetry' beneath the prose and the minutiae of our lives. To make us exalt. To make us feel. And not least of all, to make us laugh." (Tom Jones)

Another in Harbinger Records’ acclaimed series of Broadway Backers’ Auditions, I Love My Wife Backers’ Audition is a swinging romp about swinging singles with an equally swinging score by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart. And it’s those songwriters who play the score and narrate the story. Singing duties are also shared by Broadway legend Laurie Beechman and Broadway mainstay Austin Pendleton. This merry quartet has a ball and so will the listeners.

The recording was made to send out to potential backers to entice them to invest in the show. Those who did found this intimate show (the musicians also played parts in the piece) to be a sleeper hit. It opened at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre on April 17, 1977 and entranced the critics. New York Times critic Clive Barnes enthused that the show was “bright, inventive, amusing and breezy.” It ended up playing a remarkable 857 performances.

Our recording also features bonus tracks from two other Cy Coleman shows, Atlantic City, with lyrics by Christopher Gore, and Home Again, with lyrics by Barbara Fried. The five songs excerpted from their demo recordings suggest the range of Coleman’s output in the 1970s.

And for I Love My Wife, informative liner notes by Coleman biographer Andy Propst explain it all. How two couples from the suburbs of Trenton, New Jersey, spend a rollicking Christmas Eve. These friends, with a little help of strong eggnog and other libations (some smoked), decide to explore a ménage-à-quatre. They make it as far as the bed when…Well, we’ll let Mr. Coleman and Mr. Stewart tell you the story. The songs, the story and the enthusiastic creators make this CD a joy to listen to. The 12-page booklet also contains photos from the original Broadway production.

I Love My Wife Backers’ Audition makes for a joyful listening experience and a bit of nostalgia for people of a certain age. A huge hit on Broadway, a rousing score, narration by the creators and performances of two of Broadway’s finest talents. What more could one hope for in today’s parlous times?

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (Original Soundtrack) by Branford Marsalis The Netflix film features Chadwick Boseman's final performance and Viola Davis in the title role. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is the new Netflix film, out December 18, that stars Viola Davis as blues icon Ma Rainey and the late Chadwick Boseman in his final on-screen performance. Tthe soundtrack featuresoriginal music from Branford Marsalis.

    -----------------------

Milan Records announces the release of MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM (MUSIC FROM THE NETFLIX FILM), an album of music from Netflix’s newest original film about “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey. The album features score music by critically-acclaimed saxophonist, instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and educator BRANFORD MARSALIS, as well as newly-recorded covers of both popular Ma Rainey tracks and blues and jazz standards from the era. The multi-GRAMMY Award® winner brings over four decades of experience across stylistic boundaries to the project, imbuing the film with an authentic 1920s Chicago soundscape.

Of the soundtrack, composer BRANFORD MARSALIS says, “When George Wolfe called to ask me to compose music for his upcoming film, the project forced me to quickly fill in a gap in my musical experience: addressing the music of the 1920’s. I was excited about learning a new sound for my aural library and had to get right to work... Having only written arrangements for the modern big band (17 instruments, no strings), I looked forward to the challenge of writing in a ‘20s format and convincing the musicians to play the music as authentically as possible.”

Director GEORGE C. WOLFE adds, “When I signed on to direct Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, I instantly knew I wanted to work with Branford Marsalis, because when you collaborate with Branford the composer/arranger, Branford the historian, musicologist, dramatist and raconteur shows up as well. And because he understands the inherently transgressive nature of the blues, Branford’s arrangements capture not only the cultural and regional DNA in Ma Rainey’s songs, but the wit and rage embedded in every note, shout and moan.”

Chicago, 1927. A recording session. Tensions rise between Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player (Chadwick Boseman), and the white management determined to control the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe. Adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Produced by Denzel Washington, Todd Black and Dany Wolf. Starring Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige, Jonny Coyne, Jeremy Shamos and Dusan Brown.

Three CDs. Live archive release. Start spreading the news: Liza Minnelli's long-lost live album recorded in the very heart of New York, New York is getting the deluxe treatment. When the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning superstar (and future Grammy Legend) took the stage at the legendary Carnegie Hall on September 4, 1979, the concert was already a hotly-anticipated event. It would be the first of eleven consecutive shows through September 14 - the longest run in the Hall's history. Not only that, but every show in the five-level, 2, 804-seat venue was sold out. Liza had the foresight to record three nights of concerts; two years later, in 1981, she began selling the limited release on vinyl at her live dates. But, deprived of proper retail distribution, the album never reached a wide audience... until now! It even gets better, though: Liza kept those pristine multitrack tapes of the three nights recorded at Carnegie Hall. The tapes revealed a treasure trove of performances not included on the original double album. These tapes have been painstakingly restored and beautifully mixed by acclaimed engineer Ted Carfrae (Doris Day, Cilla Black) for this first-ever COMPLETE presentation of Liza's Carnegie Hall show from curtain up to curtain down. Live in New York 1979: The Ultimate Edition is available on 3 CDs, all of which overflow with showbiz sizzle: one disc with Mike Milchner's remastered version of the original vinyl release, which premieres on CD, and two discs with the never-before-released complete show. This deluxe edition also features an expanded booklet with new introductions by both Ms. Minnelli and Great American Songbook champion Michael Feinstein, both of whom served as executive producers for this release, plus photos of the artist and liner notes from reissue producers Joe Marchese and Charles L. Granata, and exclusive tributes from Liza's friends and collaborators inside a gorgeous, 8-panel digipak boasting the Warhol portrait. Again, NONE of this material has ever been available at music retail... this is indeed the ultimate Liza package!
