Composer and conductor Dimitri Tiomkin, born in Russia in 1894, but who emigrated to the USA after the First World War, is one of the most successful and celebrated composers of film music in the history of cinema. Nominated for 22 Academy Awards, he won four of them, for Best Original Score for "High Noon", "The High And The Mighty" and "The Old Man And The Sea" and for Best Original Song for "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me". In the process of writing songs and themes for dozens of movies, he had more than 25 chart entries with his compositions when recorded as singles by other artists. This great-value 55-track 2-CD set comprises themes and music from original soundtrack compositions, along with recordings of his movie songs and music by other artists from the first and highly significant first quarter-century of his career. It includes music from all the films for which he won Academy Awards, and a significant proportion of those for which he was nominated. It also features 27 records which made either US or UK charts, including Top 5 hits with Frankie Laine's "High Noon" and "Blowing Wild", Les Baxter's "The High And The Mighty", and Pat Boone's "Friendly Persuasion", as well recordings by many major artists like Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Dean Martin and Gene Pitney. John Williams - famed composer of Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Jaws and winner of five Oscars, four Golden Globes, seven BAFTAs and 25 Grammys - first made his mark through his jazz recordings captured in 1957 on Bethlehem Records. BMG is proud to reissue the long-out-print album World on a String on vinyl, which sees the young Williams perform arrangements from the Harold Arlen songbook - including favorites such as "Over the Rainbow," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and "Stormy Weather."

This CD gathers 25 tracks including some of the best full-length 1947 pre-recordings sourced from original Goldwyn Studios acetates; cuts from Capitol's "Giants Of Jazz" CC-106 album whose sales proceeds benefited the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for Cancer Research; several alternate versions of songs from the film that were issued by competing record labels; highlights from a special 1948 radio broadcast promoting the Runyon Memorial Fund and featuring one of the film's musical stars, Louis Armstrong, aired from the famous Blue Note jazz club in Chicago with fellow jazz masters Jack Teagarden and Earl Hines as sidemen in Satchmo's band; and an additional, spirited bonus performance of A Song Is Born from a 1949 Armed Forces Radio Service "Jubilee" show. Certain of these audio selections have never been released commercially, while others which may be more familiar take a fitting place as part of this package.

From Julie London, the smoky-voiced vocalist, a CD containing 24 tracks from her singles that have never appeared on any of her many LPs. One of the most distinctive pop singers of the 1950s, (between 1955 and 1957, Billboard proclaimed London the most popular female vocalist around) Julie London enjoyed a varied career that included releasing thirty-two albums and appearing on television and film. Her hit single of "Cry Me a River" remains the benchmark rendition of this much-covered song. In this tribute to London's varied singing career, Sepia Records presents twenty-four tracks from her single releases from the 1950s and early 1960s, including her earliest known recordings from 1955 - recordings that have almost disappeared between the cracks but show the expressive and technical range of this unique artist.

John Williams composed the film's score, which earned him an Academy Award and was later ranked the sixth greatest score by the American Film Institute. The main "shark" theme, a simple alternating pattern of two notes became a classic piece of suspense music, synonymous with approaching danger. Williams described the theme as "grinding away at you, just as a shark would do, instinctual, relentless, unstoppable." the piece was performed by tuba player Tommy Johnson. When asked by Johnson why the melody was written in such a high register and not played by the more appropriate French horn, Williams responded that he wanted it to sound "a little more threatening".

Over a period of many years, filmmaker Mickey Lemle set about capturing a portrait of His Holines the Dalai Lama, now in his mid-80s, as he travelled the world talking about his life, compassion, his disciplines, and his work. The film commissioned original music from Philip Glass and Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal. The score is performed by Glass and Michael Riesman on pianos, Tenzin Choegyal on vocals and various Tibetan instruments, Tim Fain on Violin, Robert Black on double bass, and the Scorchio String. Quintessential traditional offering, "Om Ma Mi Phad may Hum" can be heard in "Heart Strings," sung by 150 Tibetan children. The album ends with Philip Glass's own live performance of Mad Rush, composed for the Dalai Lama's first public address in New York in 1978.

This soundtrack for the film Samurai Marathon, directed by Bernard Rose, is comprised of excerpts of Philip Glass works. Including music from Mishima, Symphonies Nos. 2, 3 and 8, Naqoyqatsi and his operas Akhnaten and Satyagraha, these new recordings are performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Richard Hein.

Originally released in December 2002, Glass's score to the Academy Award-winning film was itself nominated for an Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and went on to win a BAFTA and a Classical BRIT. Philip Glass' score was conducted by Nick Ingman, with Michael Reisman on piano and the Lyric Quartet, and recorded at Abbey Road Studios and Air Studios, London. The score was a key element in this acclaimed triptych of dramatic tales.
