Abbey Lincoln - "Abbey Is Blue" Abbey Is Blue is the fourth album by American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln, featuring tracks recorded in 1959 for Riverside Records. A breakout performance for the jazz legend - this album displays Lincoln perfectly poised between jazz for show and jazz with a purpose. The album features an all-star lineup that includes Kenny Dorham, Stanley Turrentine, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Philly Joe Jones and Max Roach. 180G LP. Single Tip-On Jacket. Vinyl LP pressing. 1959 album from the acclaimed jazz vocalist.
Few singers have the emotional depth and versatility of Abbey Lincoln. With a voice capable of evoking the joys and pains of life, she has carved a niche as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller for over 40 years. As a singer, she avoided 'grandstanding' and rarely, if ever, improvised; she did, however, wring a lyric for it's emotional content, while bringing a searing, dramatic quality to the musical line.
As always, delivered in a manner and style unlike any other in Jazz, Abbey Lincoln elegantly performs 9 tunes that present an eye-opening look into the human soul. Supported by her working band and featuring special guest "altoists" Frank Morgan, Oliver Lake, Steve Coleman, Justin Robinson and Riley T. Bandy III, the album is a virtual exposition of the alto saxophone. Mostly containing original compositions, Who Used to Dance is also highlighted by a great performance of Bob Dylan's "Tambourine Man."
