Led by it's Director Matthew Martin, The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, joins forces with the Academy of Ancient Music in Michael Haydn's rarely heard masterpieces: the Requiem and Missa Sancti Hieronymi. The four soloists are all ex-choral scholars of Caius Choir, showcasing the distinguished musical tradition of this student group. Unjustly neglected, Joseph Haydn's younger brother was a talented composer in his own right. Written after the death of his infant daughter and his patron, the deeply emotional Requiem is a masterpiece that combines complex colourful textures and forms with imaginative orchestration and vocal writing. Mozart was a great admirer and it is thought that Haydn's Requiem formed the prototype for his own better known masterpiece. In contrast, the later Missa Sancti Hieronymi is lighter and more optimistic. Unusually scored for oboes, bassoons, trombones and continuo (with no upper strings), it exudes transparency and joyful energy. This recording will undoubtedly put these neglected works back into mainstream repertoire.

Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) and Cambridge Handel Opera Company (CHOC) follow their Gramophone-nominated recording of Eccles' Semele with a world-premiere recording of John Weldon's masque The Judgment of Paris. In 1700 the Earl of Halifax decided England needed all- sung opera. He offered a 'Musick Prize' of �210 for the best setting of the libretto of The Judgement of Paris by William Congreve, with entries by composers like John Eccles and Daniel Purcell. Weldon's setting, which won the competition but was never published, is recorded here for the first time. Released as a hardback mediabook, the CD is accompanied by a host of fascinating essays written specially by historians, musicologists and other experts - finally giving this winning masque the attention it deserves.

Back in the days when Johann Christian Bach was writing music, staying true to a composer's intention was not a priority in musical performances in the way it is today! His publisher, William Foster, was particularly cavalier in his attitude to his client's music and often amended the masterpieces - amalgamating or even omitting parts entirely - for purely commercial reasons. The Academy of Ancient Music, renowned for the authority of its performances, restored the works on this disc so that the listener can experience these pieces as J.C. Bach intended.

Signum Records are proud to present the debut orchestral recording from Grace Davidson, one of the UK's leading British sopranos specialising in Baroque music. She is joined by some of Europe's leading Baroque musicians from the Academy of Ancient Music to perform a selection of works by Handel and Vivaldi, with performaces led by violinist Bojan Cicic under artistic director Joseph Crouch. Grace won the Early Music Prize while studying singing at London's Royal Academy of Music. Since then, she has worked with the leading Baroque ensembles of our day, singing under the batons of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Paul McCreesh, Philippe Herreweghe and Harry Christophers. Her discography includes a decade of albums with The Sixteen, many of which feature her as soloist - Handel's Jeptha (as Angel), Dixit Dominus, Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, Pianto della Madonna, and the Lutheran Masses of Bach.

Much of the music of Baroque Spain remains obscure, despite the fact that many Spanish composers of a previous era - Cabaz�n, Arouxo and Cabinilles - have retained greater notoriety. During the 16th century, Spain benefitted from a rich musical interchange with Italy, but that ran drier by the end of the century and musical influences faded. Spanish music continued to develop from it's own resources and the voice of Francisco Valls stands out in this newly arrived "Baroque" era in Spain. Based in Barcelona, he is best known for various theatrical works and his Missa Scarla Aretina (1702), a controversial mix of old and new, infamous for it's flagrant disregard of various established musical practices. The Choir of Keble College is delighted to collaborate with the Academy of Ancient Music to bring to life another important work, Valls' "forgotten" Missa Regalis (1740) in a new edition by Simon Heighes, unlikely to have been heard since part way through the 18th century. Although smaller scale than his earlier Missa Scarla Aretina, it is a refreshing (and sometimes fascinatingly illogical) combination of ancient and "modern". We hope that this recording, and Simon's new edition of the score, encourages further performances of this piece along with greater interest into the life and works of this somewhat unconventional musician.

This album presents the world-premiere recording of Jan Ladislav Dussek's 'Messe Solemnelle', probably unheard since its composition over 200 years ago. This remarkable work is performed by the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of AAM under Music Director Richard Egarr, who are joined by a superb cast of soloists: Stefanie True, Helen Charlston, Gwilym Bowen, and Morgan Pearse. This landmark recording was made in London in autumn 2019 and is presented in a deluxe edition with 100-page full-color booklet containing a plethora of scholarship and insight into Dussek and the times he lived in and composed for. A colorful character and intrepid international man of mystery, Dussek's music matches his fascinating life story. Ahead of its time and breaking new ground, the harmonic and structural twists and turns of this Mass setting - one of the last works Dussek ever wrote - make it something every music-lover should hear.

Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) releases the final volume of an acclaimed project to record Mozart's complete works for keyboard and orchestra. Fittingly, this final instalment includes three works that in various ways are valedictory: K595 is Mozart's last completed keyboard concert, while K503 is the last concerto of his Viennese years. Louise Alder joins AAM and Robert Levin in an aria for solo soprano, solo keyboard and orchestra; Ch'io mi scordi di te? is a farewell to one of Mozart's favourite singers, Nancy Storace. Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) releases the penultimate volume of an acclaimed project to record Mozart’s complete works for keyboard and orchestra.

This volume includes Mozart’s Concerto No. 7 for Three Pianos and Orchestra, performed here uniquely on three different types of keyboard instruments: by Robert Levin (tangent piano), Ya-Fei Chuang (fortepiano) and Laurence Cummings (harpsichord).

It follows the release of the same concerto in Mozart’s own arrangement for two keyboards (Vol. 11) and is joined on this album by two other Piano Concertos composed in Salzburg in the early months of 1776.

The first of its kind, this duet album is a musical journey that draws back the curtain which has obscured gay love-stories for centuries. In the 17th century, Venice offered a liberal safe haven of sorts to the gay community of greater Europe. There are accounts of outed artists escaping to Venice to live and work amongst its more permissive culture. Almost 400 years later, we reconnect with this uncommonly tolerant place and time to share a history that is yet untold. The album includes vivid and charming duets from Monteverdi’s 7th book of madrigals as well as his touching musical love letters (lettere amorose). Additionally, there are four modern-day premieres of works by the little-known composers Boretti, Melani, and Castrovillari; including a moving duet for the lovers Hercules and Theseus as they exit the underworld hand-in-hand. Solo arias by Cavalli and Stradella depict the yearning of hidden love, and the recording culminates with one of the most beautiful duets of all time, ‘Pur ti miro’ from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. This album is a recognition and celebration of gay love that spans the centuries.

Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) continues a celebrated project to record Mozart’s complete works for keyboard and orchestra, with this tenth volume of the series. Together with renowned scholar-pianist Robert Levin, and directed by Laurence Cummings and Bojan Cicic, AAM presents the Church Sonata No. 17 alongside the Piano Concerto No. 5 – Mozart’s first original keyboard concerto – both for orchestra and organ. The three K107 concertos are joined
by a concerto movement from the music book of Mozart’s sister, Nannerl, believed to have been drafted by Mozart as a young child, and completed here by Robert Levin. The hardback CD package is accompanied by comprehensive notes commissioned specially for the album.

Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) resumes a celebrated project to record Mozart’s complete Piano Concertos, with this ninth volume released after an extraordinary 20-year wait. Together with renowned scholar-pianist Robert Levin, AAM presents Mozart’s Piano Concertos No. 21 in C Major K467, perhaps one of Mozart’s most well-known Piano Concertos and featured in films The Spy Who Loved Me and Elvira Madigan, and No. 24 in C Minor K491, described by Mozart scholar Alexander Hyatt King as ‘not only the most sublime of the whole series but also one of the greatest pianoforte concertos ever composed’. AAM’s founder Christopher Hogwood and Robert Levin came together in 1993 to record Mozart’s complete works for keyboard and orchestra for the first time ever on period instruments. Only eight albums out of a total of 13 were recorded, with the most recent released in 2001. This release marks the renewal of this landmark project and will be followed by the four final albums of the series later in 2023 and 2024.

At the end of its 40th anniversary season the Academy of Ancient Music — described as “the finest period-instrument orchestra in the world” by Classic FM — releases a significant new recording of JS Bach's Orchestral Suites BWV1066-69, directed from the harpsichord by Richard Egarr. Performed with single strings and at a low, "French" pitch, this recording offers a unique, chamber-like interpretation of Bach's virtuosic ouvertures.
