Most widely known as the composer of the Brazilian standard 'The Girl from Ipanema', Antonio Carlos Jobim rose to fame n the 1960s as one of the most prominent leaders in the bossa nova revolution. Here, he appears with singer Gal Costa, who accompanied Caetano Veloso at the forefront of the Tropicalismo movement. They perform such songs as 'Desafinado', 'Agua de Beber', and 'Gabriela'.

Antonio Carlos Jobim - "The Composer Of Desafinado, Plays (Verve Vault Series)". 'The Composer of Desafinado, Plays,' released in 1963 on Verve Records, marked the U.S. debut of Brazilian songwriter and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim as a bandleader and documents the beginning of what would become a long-term creative relationship between Jobim and arranger Claus Ogerman that helped define the international sound of bossa nova. Recorded in New York in 1962 and produced by Creed Taylor, the 12-song instrumental set pairs Jobim's understated guitar and piano work with Ogerman's lush orchestral arrangements, backed by a mostly American studio ensemble with select Brazilian contributors. With it's soft textures, streamlined rhythms, and harmonic richness, the record emphasizes the poised intimacy that became a hallmark of Jobim's songwriting - cementing his role as both architect and ambassador of the bossa nova movement. Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1965, The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim was Jobim's second album to be recorded outside of Brazil, following The Composer of Desafinado, Plays, which had been taped in 1963. While for his first American venture Jobim counted with arrangements by Claus Ogerman, for this second effort he relied on the multiple talents of the great Nelson Riddle, who had a longstanding career working with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few. All of the compositions here are by Jobim, who plays piano, guitar, and also sings. Along with well-known compositions such as "A Felicidade," "Agua de Beber" or "Dindi", this album introduced two new songs: "Bonita" and "Surfboard".

The Girl from Ipanema was the first album by Antonio Carlos Jobim and features a dozen instrumentals arranged by Claus Ogerman, whose work would mark the beginning of a lifelong musical relationship with Jobim. Of the album's twelve songs, almost all are jazz standards. The opening track The Girl from Ipanema is believed to be the second most recorded song in history, the first being The Beatles' Yesterday. The album was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, Rolling Stone Brasil ranked it number 58 in "The 100 greatest Brazilian music records".
