Art had just left jail, was out of practice, was fighting heroin addiction and found a problem with his sax mouthpiece just before this '57 session. The result? One of his all-time shining moments! He, Philly Joe Jones, Red Garland and Paul Chambers work magic with Straight Life; Imagination; Star Eyes; Birk's Works, and more. Bonus track from the session: The Man I Love.

Step into the timeless jazz realm of saxophone great Art Pepper! Embark on a musical journey like no other with Pepper's iconic album Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section, now available in a breathtaking Ultra High Quality Record vinyl edition from Analogue Productions. The Perfect Trio: Pepper, Garland, Chambers, and Jones Imagine the magic when Art Pepper, the virtuoso of the alto saxophone, joins forces with the legendary rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. This 1957 Contemporary Records label debut spotlights their synergy on classics such as 'You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To' and 'Waltz Me Blues,' sounding nothing short of sublime! For Pepper, known for his emotionally charged performances, Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section marked a career milestone. According to him, the album was recorded under enormous pressure, as he first learned of the recording session the morning he was due in the studio, and he had never met the other musicians, all of whom he greatly admired. His horn was also in less than exceptional condition. Still, the session produced results that Becky Byrkit, writing for AllMusic, deemed, 'a diamond of recorded jazz history.' Brian Morton and Richard Cook, writing for The Penguin Jazz Guide (10th ed.), described Meets The Rhythm Section as 'a poetic, burning date, with all four men playing above themselves... Between them, they'd delivered a masterpiece.' Meets The Rhythm Section also shares a storied link to the origins of Contemporary Records, founded in 1951 by Lester Koenig. For this UHQR edition of Meets The Rhythm Section we have an included a 16-page booklet that tells the history of Contemporary Records as well as offering new liner notes from John Koenig, Lester's son, known for his insightful jazz reviews. Recording information: RCA Studios, Hollywood, CA (01/12/1953-??/??/1954).
This double LP offers listeners a strong introduction to the trumpet playing and arrangements of Shorty Rogers, but unfortunately it has gone out of print and was the first and last in its series. The 32 selections feature six different groups headed by Rogers during 1953-1954, ranging from an octet to a big band; all of the bands feature sidemen who essentially formed a who's who of West Coast jazz. Among the other soloists are altoist Art Pepper; tenors Bill Holman, Bill Perkins, Zoot Sims, Bob Cooper, and Jimmy Giuffre; trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison; pianist Hampton Hawes; and altoists Herb Geller and Bud Shank. The majority of the selections are Rogers originals; there is music from the Marlon Brando film The Wild One and a Count Basie tribute set. Swinging and surprisingly fiery "cool jazz" that deserves to be reissued on CD in full. ~ Scott Yanow

In candid interviews, he recounts his troubled marriages, dependence on drugs, prison terms, and luck in meeting his last wife, an articulate, compassionate defender of her errant husband. Titles featuring Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Helen Humes, Ben Webster and many more! Mastered AAA by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes. 180-gram LPs pressed at Quality Record Pressings! - Saxophonist Art Pepper was considered one of the best altos of his time, just behind Charlie Parker. This 1960 recording, whose album's title presages the addiction that would soon offline the self-taught musician's career, features compositions written by fellow saxophonists (including Ornette Coleman's "Tears Inside" and Buddy Collette's "A Bit of Basie"). Finding Pepper at his finest, most limber form, his own composition "Las Cuevas de Mario" is a particular standout in 5/4 time and would pop up on his set lists in subsequent years. - This new edition is released as part of the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series on 180-gram vinyl pressed at QRP with (AAA) lacquers cut from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman and is presented in a Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket.
