When an artist follows trends, "electric" can sound like a gimmick. But with Donald Byrd, it's a natural evolution. On "Electric Byrd", electronic textures become an organic extension of his unmistakable lyricism, never artificial, always personal. With Duke Pearson on electric piano and the subtle rhythmic wizardry of Airto Moreira, the album unfolds as a series of vivid "feelingscapes." Moods shift fluidly from expressive trumpet solos to richly layered ensemble passages and intricate rhythm designs, creating a deeply cohesive listening experience. From the cool, floating woodwinds of "Estavanico" to the understated brilliance of drummer Mickey Roker on "Essence", 'Electric Byrd' is mood-driven jazz fusion at it's most imaginative and immersive.

Vinyl LP pressing. Recorded in 1956 for producer Tom Wilson's short-lived Boston-based label Transition Records, Byrd Blows On Beacon Hill presented trumpeter Donald Byrd in a relaxed and intimate quartet setting with his frequent collaborator Doug Watkins on bass along with Boston area musicians Ray Santisi on piano and Jim Zitano on drums. The standards heavy set was captured on a rainy Spring afternoon in the Beacon Hill home of engineer Steve Fassett which provided a casual atmosphere that gave the album both it's title and it's easy-going charm. Byrd is at his lyrical best on Joe Sullivan's tune "Little Rock Getaway" as well versions of "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "If I Love Again," and "Stella by Starlight." The trumpeter lays out to let the trio shine on "People Will Say We're in Love" and "What's New."

Yet somehow this masterful quintet session from April 1961 (which also features Herbie Hancock, sounding exceptionally fine on his very first Blue Note recording session) remained unreleased for nearly 20 years. Of particular note are Herbie's playing on "Great God" and the sophisticated excellence the entire ensemble brings.

The fifth and the last volume of “Montmartre Jazzhus 1965” Series turned out to be a reunion of Blue Note’s 1964 release “One Flight Up” team. Dexter Gordon was apparently enjoying the presence of the younger trumpeter Donald Byrd one year after their first encounter in a Paris studio.
“ … Dexter and Donald again achieved an excellent blend and a relaxed outing … The two horns made for a nice contrast, with Byrd’s bright, melodic lines set beside Gordon’s robust outpourings.” (Mark Gardner)
