We can thank our lucky stars that Nina Simone was well aware of her musical environment and enjoyed experimenting with it, despite her notorious eccentric personality. This was the only reason that so much basic repertoire, traditional blues numbers, black work songs and favorite white show melodies - all filled with a deep soul feeling - reached her fans. "Emergency Ward!" is no exception. First there is the explosive medley, recorded live, of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and David Nelson's "Today Is A Killer". Accompanied by a small combo and a gospel choir, Nina Simone ignites an 18-minute blazing bonfire which loses none of it's spiritual fire for even a second.In contrast to the gentle "Poppies", extravagantly produced with strings, woodwinds and chorus, is the questioning "Isn't It A Pity", arranged for piano. Her parents, who had taken seats in the front row, were forced to move to the back of the hall to make way for white people. An emerging civil rights activist was formed. In 1958 she recorded her first studio album for Bethlehem Records, followed by Colpix and Philips and in 1967 RCA Victor. 'Nuff Said! Spawned the hitsingles "Ain't Got No - I Got Life" and the Bee Gees cover "To Love Somebody". After "Mississippi Goddam", from the same album, a civil rights message was the norm in Simone's recordings and became part of her concerts. In 1969 Simone recorded "To Be Young, Gifted And Black". Renditions of the song have been recorded by Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway.

Little Girl Blue, released in 1957, was Nina Simone's first studio recording ever. It was originally issued on the Bethlehem label and features the singer and pianist backed by bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Many of the tracks from this LP would become true classics, among them her perennial version of "My Baby Just Cares For Me". This album introduced Nina not only as a brilliant singer, but also as a unique jazz pianist. She was a solid improviser and her reworking of such well-known standards as Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait", besides being highly inventive, reveal her extensive classical music training. This 2LP set brings you the LP "Forbidden Fruit" & the LP "At Newport" by Nina Simone. "Gin House Blues" is later re-recorded in a more upbeat way. "Work Song", written by Oscar Brown, Jr. And Nat Adderley tells the story of a chain gang. The title song "Forbidden Fruit" is an humorous up-tempo take on Adam and Eve was part nursery rhyme, part call and response. Nina was supported by Al Shackman (piano), Chris White (Guitar), Bobby Hamilton (Bas) by both performances. "At Newport" is another fine Nina live show, starting off with blues and a stunning reading of "Porgy". She then uses her major spot at Newport jazz festival to show off her diversity going into folk, rhythmic jams and an instrumental version of "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" that is almost like a classical recital.

After a triumphant concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1992, Nina was approached by Elektra A&R executive Michael Alago (whose previous work at the label included Tracy Chapman and Metallica). When asked if Nina was ready to record again, she replied, "Get me the money... then we can talk!" Modeled around two of Simone's favorites, Frank Sinatra's A Man Alone (The Words And Music Of Rod McKuen) and Billie Holidays' Lady In Satin-with the common element that both were recorded with full orchestral accompaniment, the sessions began. Backed by a 50-piece orchestra, Simone recorded the material that would comprise A Single Woman with producer Andre Fischer (Natalie Cole's then-husband and former drummer for the band Rufus.)
