From Bach to Brahms, Mahler to Messiaen, any composer worth their salt has written for the pipe organ. And so when James McVinnie put the idea to Tristan Perich to write for the king of instruments, it was perhaps not a surprise that the New York contemporary-classical composer had already considered the possibilities of marrying his signature 1-bit electronic music with an instrument that has reverberated down the centuries. The resulting piece that started with a conversation between the two back in 2016 is undoubtedly Perich's most ambitious work to date. Infinity Gradient is an hour-long symphony in seven movements for organ and 100 speakers in 1-bit audio, recorded for this album at London's Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, where McVinnie was artist-in-residence throughout 2024. The 100 speakers are set across the stage - a recurring element in Perich's work for over two decades, this time featuring four giant subwoofers, 24 medium-sized speakers, and 72 small speakers - against the backdrop of RFH's imposing organ; the piece is as visually striking to look at as it is to listen to. (In addition to being available in stereo, Infinity Gradient will also come in multichannel Dolby Atmos.)

This autumn, Erased Tapes are set to release 'Give It to the Sky: Arthur Russell's Tower of Meaning Expanded' by composer and producer Peter Broderick and French 12-piece group Ensemble 0; a complete re-recording of Russell's epic minimalist orchestral composition originally released in 1983. Released 6th October, 'Give It to the Sky' also includes unreleased tracks by Russell which have been restored and re-recorded, resulting in an 80-minute reanimation that threads several lost songs into a meticulous and gorgeous rendering. Ensemble 0 weave in and out of Broderick's additions. 'Corky', a poignant cowboy ballad that Russell never finished, appears, disappears, and reappears three times, the droning exhalations of 'Tower of Meaning' making it feel sweeter and sadder. Arriving just after the triumphant halfway mark, the title track is a sublime meditation on mere existence, about staring at some simple rural scene and marcelling at the miracle of being anywhere at all. It is an apt encapsulation of how this entire project feels - a glorious way to hear something that might have seemed familiar as if for the very first time. Russell was never much for definitive versions, of course. He was constantly rethinking the possibilities of a piece, of wondering what else it could do. 'Give it to the Sky' is a powerful affirmation of those principles, using Tower of Meaning's framework to build outward and upward, to shape something that functions within Russell's wondrous, paradoxical world. And 'Give it to the Sky' is also not intended to be some definitive last word. Broderick and Ensemble 0 speak already of the ways it may shift on stage, of where else it might lead. 1. Fans of the Berlin based Nils Frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join Frahm on stage - the likes of Rachel Grimes, Rob Lowe of Balmorhea as well as label colleagues Peter Broderick and Olafur Arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. It will come as no surprise then that Nils Frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to Erased Tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow Berliner Anne Muller to produce 7fingers. With their first collective release Frahm and Muller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an 'intoxicating and delicious' collection of songs. Primarily a pianist Nils Frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase Muller on cello. Anne Muller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the Wolf-Ferrari-Ensemble, Phillip Boa and recent tours with Agnes Obel, proves an amp musical partner for Frahm. As the recognition continues to grow for Nils Frahm's previous solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells, 2011 sees a new side to this young talent as he embarks on a detour into strings, symphonies and glitch beats alongside the estimable Anne Muller. 1. We Are On The Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration is not only a commemoration of a half-century of magical music making, but also a loving tribute to the band's three original members who have passed: Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, and most recently, Joseph Jarman. The group converged in Ann Arbor in October 16-20, 2018 for five days of rehearsals and recording. The sheer breadth of the ensemble's collective expression is staggering, ranging from Mitchell's art songs and through-composed pieces, Moye's percussion workouts, and, of course, collective improvisation. Particularly powerful is the contribution of Moor Mother (Camae Ayewa), who, to prepare for the recording, was given nothing more than some old Art Ensemble recordings to listen to and the directive from Mitchell to "just be you."

Vinyl LP pressing. Fallen Trees is the new album by singular talent and literal force of nature Lubomyr Melnyk - known as 'the prophet of the piano' due to his lifelong devotion to his instrument. Cascades of notes, canyons and rivers of sound: there's something about his music that channels the natural world at it's most awe-inspiring. In Fallen Trees the connection with the environment continues, taking it's cue from a long rail journey Melnyk made through Europe. Glancing out of the window as the train passed through a dark forest, he was struck by the sight of trees that had recently been felled. "They were glorious," he says. "Even though they'd been killed, they weren't dead. There was something sorrowful there, but also hopeful." That sense of sadness touched by optimism infuses the album, too: rarely has Melnyk made music so shot through with melancholy and regret, but which sounds so rapt, even radiant.

Erased Tapes rounds off a jubilant year of tenth anniversary celebrations with a very special release, 1+1=X, a set of exclusive music from every artist on the label. Featuring never before heard tracks from Nils Frahm, Kiasmos and A Winged Victory For The Sullen, 1+1=X sees Erased Tapes artists come together to make an album as a collective. Sharing the same space, instruments and each others capabilities during a residency at Vox-Ton studio in Berlin, they recorded 20 songs to mark the label's 10-year history. Previously only available as a limited vinyl box set for Record Store Day, 1+1=X produced by label curator Robert Raths will be now be available as a 3-LP set on August 17th to accompany the 2CD box set and digital download to be released on 29th June 2018.
