Stan Kenton's 1956 performance at the Macumba Club was a prime example of a band at the height of it's powers, delivering a night of jazz that was as polished as it was powerful. The San Francisco venue, known for attracting top-tier talent, was the ideal setting for Kenton and his orchestra to showcase their distinct sound - the blend of sophisticated arrangements and bold brass that had become their hallmark. This recording isn't just a relic of the past; it's a time capsule that preserves the night when Kenton, Heider, and a band of virtuosos turned the Macumba Club into the epicenter of the jazz universe, if only for a few fleeting hours. Listening to it now, you're not just hearing music; masterclass in big band jazz and recording, and a testament to these juggernauts of the golden age of jazz. Available now for the first time on CD.

Ohio-born Jon Hendricks is widely recognized as one of the foremost masters of vocalese and scat singing. His distinctive style involved crafting lyrics to fit instrumental melodies and improvising vocal solos across complex jazz arrangements. Before embarking as a solo artist, Hendricks was best known for his work with the iconic 1950s trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, who revolutionized jazz singing by adding lyrics to famous instrumentals. Hendricks was celebrated not only for his inventive and witty lyricism but also for his rhythmic intricacies. Hendricks' unmistakable voice weaves through tracks, playful and profound, yet always deeply rooted in jazz tradition. These Club 43 recordings, previously unheard until now, introduced Hendricks to a new audience across the Atlantic. Club 43 in Manchester, England, was a pivotal venue in the 1960s jazz scene. It was part of a dynamic network of jazz clubs in the UK that hosted both local and international musicians. Established in 1951, the club quickly gained a reputation for it's intimate atmosphere and dedication to high-quality jazz. Club 43 stood out for it's ability to attract big names while maintaining a local charm. Alongside other famous venues like Ronnie Scott's in London, Club 43 was a regular stop for American jazz artists touring Europe, hosting legends such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Roland Kirk and Stan Getz. Recorded April 26, 1968 at Club 43, Manchester, England this is a never-before-released 1968 recording and is available here for the first time on CD. Complete with liner notes from the singer's family and concert pianist.

In 1946 it was widely conceded that Duke Ellington's instrument was not the piano but the orchestra. It is totally conceded today that his greatest orchestra was that of the first half of the 1940s. That period has been most admirably documented with recordings of concerts, broadcasts and the original recordings. Hindsight presents here the Ellington orchestra that survived World War II and while not the superlative instrument of 1940 it, too, is nothing short of magnificent. These recordings were taken from several performances taking place across the United States in 1946 and 1947. All performances on this double CD come not from phonograph recordings but from electrical transcriptions made especially for radio stations only. When the late Wally Heider, Hindsight's founder, cleared these transcriptions for their issuance, originally as five long play records and are available now for the first time on CD here.

During his long career as a band-leader, Stan Kenton played often in the most famous and prestigious concert halls across the world. From the Music Center in Los Angeles, to Carnegie Hall in New York; from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, to the Festival Hall in London, he really played them all. Yet, if there was one place Stan considered home, it was a simple ballroom in Balboa Beach, California. This recording is both a quintessential example of Kenton, his band and it's awesome power during this period and of Wally Heider's exceptional engineering talent he would later become famed for. Striking a perfect balance between clarity, warmth, and depth, Heider seamlessly captures here the fine jazz arrangements by Johnny Richards and Bill Holman. Recorded at The Rendezvous Ballroom, Balboa Beach, California in 1958, captured in incredible detail by the legendary Wally Heider and available for the first time on CD.
