Best known for his work with Charles Mingus, pianist Horace Parlan began recording for Blue Note in 1960 with an excellent run of hard bop classics including?Speakin' My Piece, a quintet date featuring a frontline of Stanley Turrentine (saxophone) and Tommy Turrentine (trumpet) with the rhythm team of George Tucker (bass) and Al Harewood (drums). Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.

Rosengren, is one of Sweden’s most internationally renowned jazz artists. Since making his name at age 19, he has been a standard-bearer of Swedish jazz for over 50 years, inspiring and accompanying many generations of musicians. Featured in the 19-man band are virtually the entire jazz elite from 1970’s and 80’s, including Parlan and Raney.

In a concert given in Zurich in 1991, when it was then rare for Shepp to adopt the alto saxophone of his debuting years, this album offers a fine example of their repertory : a series of perfectly formed pieces, played with both the depth of experience and lucid distance. Going to the heart of the matter, the two musicians enable us to discover the very essence of jazz and Afro-American music in it's full glory.

Three years after the sensational spiritual recording by this duo “Goin’ Home” (SCCD 31079) producer Nils Winther had Archie and Horace in the studio again. The theme this time was traditional blues. Once again the Shepp-Parlan duo made one of the best selling SteepleChase releases. England’s Gramophone magazine called the duo “a powerful and ultimately inspirational collaboration”. This recording was awarded the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis for Modern Jazz Und Jazz-Rock of 1982 by the prestigious Deutsche Phono Akademie.

This is Horace Parlan’s second quintet date (the first one “Frank-ly Speaking” SCCD 31076 recorded in New York) and this time recording took place in Copenhagen with fellow expatriate Thad Jones on flugelhorn and visiting tenorman Eddie Harris on the front line.
